Phlegmonous gastritis is a rare, suppurative bacterial infection of the gastric wall and one of the rarest complications after upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. The pathogenesis is not fully clear, but multiple risk factors have been described in literature as mucosal injury and achlorhydria. We report a case of a 76-year-old male with vomiting and epigastric pain, two days after an upper endoscopy, who presented in septic shock.

This study proposes a new, low-cost lateral canthotomy simulation model for the purpose of improving training among emergency medicine physicians. This model is important for the rehearsal and honing of skills necessary in such a critical procedure, in cases where this procedure needs to be done in a sensitive situation where an ophthalmologist is not readily available. We surveyed 15 emergency residents before and after the training on comfort and proficiency in performing lateral canthotomy with a standardized Likert scale.

Loss-of-function variants in ATP6V0A2, encoding the trans Golgi V-ATPase subunit V0a2, cause wrinkly skin syndrome (WSS), a connective tissue disorder with glycosylation defects and aberrant cortical neuron migration. We used knock-out (Atp6v0a2) and knock-in (Atp6v0a2) mice harboring the R755Q missense mutation selectively abolishing V0a2-mediated proton transport to investigate the WSS pathomechanism. Homozygous mutants from both strains displayed a reduction of growth, dermis thickness, and elastic fiber formation compatible with WSS.

Metacarpal fractures are among the most common injuries seen in the emergency department, accounting for 17.2% of all adult fractures and more than 30% of all hand injuries. The majority of these cases are stable, and conservative treatment involving closed reduction and immobilization typically yields good clinical and functional outcomes.

Mitochondrial disorders are often underrecognized as potential causes of rhabdomyolysis, a condition characterized by acute muscle breakdown that can lead to local and potentially systemic complications, with the possibility of being life-threatening. Accounts of rhabdomyolysis as a peri-operative complication associated with mitochondrial disorders are rare; therefore, this study is noteworthy. We describe a case of rhabdomyolysis that occurred during the peri-operative period in a middle-aged male with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease-like peripheral neuropathy.

Phlegmasia cerulea dolens is a rare manifestation of massive deep vein thrombosis with threat to limb and life. A patient with a background of ovarian malignancy in remission and pelvic radiotherapy presented with left lower limb phlegmasia cerulea dolens as a result of extensive acute left lower limb deep vein thrombosis, extending from the popliteal vein to the inferior vena cava. While initial rapid thrombolysis and left iliac vein stenting were successful, she developed significant hemorrhagic complications from her right radial intra-arterial line with compartment syndrome requiring fasciotomy.

Introduction: This review of case series and case reports explores conservative management strategies for paraspinal compartment syndrome (PCS), a rare clinical condition. Extremity compartment syndrome has been shown to be managed most effectively with emergent surgical release of the fascial compartment. Given the rarity of PCS and the paucity of research in the literature, some authors have suggested the possibility of conservative treatment.

Introduction: Tibial plateau fractures, which constitute approximately 1% of all fractures with an incidence of 10.3/100,000 annually, result from varus or valgus forces combined with axial loading in the knee. These fractures display a bimodal distribution, affecting younger individuals through high-velocity trauma and older individuals through low-energy trauma.

Objective: Liver compression (LC) has been proposed to predict fluid responsiveness in human pediatric patients. Because the evaluation of fluid responsiveness through LC depends on the mechanism of increased intra-abdominal pressure (IAP), understanding the impact of LC on IAP, cardiac output (CO), and respiratory parameters is essential. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effects of LC on these parameters.

Purpose: One of the primary causes of heat-induced compartment syndrome is the loss of elasticity of the body surface eschar itself, we have recently replaced escharotomy with conservative tangential excision in the treatment of compartment syndrome caused by heat and achieved good results.
Methods: Since 2019, our burn center has applied conservative tangential excision and heterogeneous dermal coverage technology for decompression treatment of 16 patients with thermal-induced compartment syndrome, involving 19 parts of the limbs and 5 parts of the chest and abdomen. All cases were treated with decompression under general anesthesia within 12-48 h after burn.
