A growing body of evidence supports an association between systemic autoimmune disease and exposure to amphibole asbestos, a form of asbestos typically with straight, stiff, needle-like fibers that are easily inhaled. While the bulk of this evidence comes from the population exposed occupationally and environmentally to Libby Amphibole (LA) due to the mining of contaminated vermiculite in Montana, studies from Italy and Australia are broadening the evidence to other sites of amphibole exposures. What these investigations have done, that most historical studies have not, is to evaluate amphibole asbestos separately from chrysotile, the most common commercial asbestos in the United States.

We were interested in micro-variations in an athlete's psychophysical state that separate peak exertion from physiological collapse. Thus, we measured perceptual acuity in runners using a classic psychophysical approach, the (JND) on two standard stimuli runs at treadmill speed corresponding to 70%VO and 80%VO. Thirty-four male runners ( age = 35.

Earthworm body wall muscle synapses have been suggested to contain both excitatory and inhibitory inputs, and therefore allow for investigation of excitatory/inhibitory signaling in an easily accessible model system. While previous studies have focused on postsynaptic GABAergic inhibitory mechanisms, this study investigated the hypothesis that GABAergic signaling also has presynaptic inhibitory function. This hypothesis was tested by loading synaptogreen C4 dye (also called FM1-43) into presynaptic vesicles in the presence of GABA at longitudinal muscle synapses.

The synthesis and structural characterization of 16 new thallium lanthanide squarate complexes and 1 new cerium squarate oxalate complex are presented. These new complexes─Tl[Ln(CO)(HO)]·CO (Ln = La-Nd) (), Tl[Ln(CO)(HO)]·8HO (Ln = Sm-Lu, Y) (), Tl[Ce(CO)(HO)]·CO (), and [Ce(CO)(CO)(HO)]·2HO ()─all contain the squarate ligand bound to the trivalent lanthanides with varying coordination modes and denticities. Of the four new groups of complexes prepared in this work, two groupings contain monovalent thallium and trivalent lanthanides, the most common oxidation states for these metals.
