Mixed ligand Th(IV) complexes of the type [M(Q)(L)(NO3)2] x 2 H2O have been synthesized using 8-hydroxyquinoline (HQ) as a primary ligand and N- and/or O- donor amino acids (HL) such as L-lysine, L-aspartic acid and L-cysteine as secondary ligands. The metal complexes have been characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, electrical conductance, room temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements, spectral and thermal studies. The electrical conductance studies of the complexes in DMF in 10(-3) M concentration indicate their non-electrolytic nature.

In the present investigation, a newly isolated organic solvent-tolerant and alkaliphilic bacterial strain was reported from a hydrocarbon (gasoline and diesel) contaminated soil collected from the petrol station, Shirpur (India). The strain was identified as Bacillus circulans MTCC 7942, based on phenotype, biochemical, and phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence. The capability of Bacillus circulans to secrete an extracellular, thermostable, alkaline protease and grow in the presence of organic solvents was explored.

The present work describes the synthesis and spectral analysis of some new 3(Z)-{4-[4-(arylsulfonyl)piperazin-1-ylbenzylidene)-1,3-dihydro-2H-indol-2-one (5a-j). Ten of the synthesized compounds were screened in vitro against six species of microorganisms, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Asperigellus niger and Asperigellus clavatus. Most of the compounds exhibited significant antimicrobial activity.

In many lighting applications at the lux level, full coverage of the target surface, uniformity, and glare are important requirements. In the case of LEDs, luminaire optical output depends upon the source of luminous flux, radiation spatial distribution, geometry of the LED array, and source-to-target distance. One has to optimize these parameters to fulfill the needs of the application and to have an efficient LED luminaire.

A wild fungal strain of Aspergillus terreus, labeled as PM3, was isolated by using the Candida albicans bioassay and confirmed by 18S r DNA analyses. Lovastatin was produced by submerged and solid state fermentations. Of the 30 isolated fungal strains, 11 showed lovastatin production with Aspergillus terreus PM3 being the best with a yield of 240 mg/L at the 10th day of submerged fermentation.

Liver is the metabolic factory and contains several valuable enzymes that catalyze biochemical reactions. β-glucuronidase is one of the well-known lysozymes that participates in the carbohydrate metabolism in the tissues of various vertebrates. In the present study, an attempt was made to study the kinetic properties of hepatic β-glucuronidase of the Indian major carp (IMC), Labeo rohita.

β-glucuronidase is the lysosomal enzyme that increases in the tissues of animals in response to xenobiotics entering the body. Kidney is one of the organs where all the xenobiotics can be carried along with the blood for filtration, and therefore, this enzyme may be present in large amount. Ours is probably the first attempt in the teleost to study the kinetics of enzyme β-glucuronidase.

Adsorbent prepared from Musa paradisica leaves--a low cost bioadsorbent was successfuly used to remove methylene blue from an aqueous solution in batch study. The effect of contact time, adsorbent dosage, pH of solution, initial dye concentration, particle size of adsorbent and kinetics of adsorption was studied. It has been observed that the optimum pH is 8 and adsorbent dosage required is 4 g/L for 97% removal of methylene blue (100 mg/L).

Reduced effect of JH-I, JH-II and JH-III on oxygen consumption of II-V instars and increased effect on the oxygen consumption of VI instar larvae suggested that control of corcyra with juvenile hormones could be brought about only when applied to just emerged VI instar larvae. Similarly fumigation of juvenile hormone treated larvae could prove beneficial only at VI instar stage. The possibility of enhancing the effect of fumigant with pretreatment of JH will be futile as even only JH treated VI instar larvae develop into abnormal individuals which die later.
