It has significant potential to cause preventable morbidity and mortality. International consensus from sports medicine organisations supports treating EHS with early rapid cooling by immersing the casualty in cold water.

Currently, little is known about the length of time required to rehabilitate patients from stress fractures and their return to preinjury level of physical activity. Previous studies have looked at the return to sport in athletes, in a general population, where rehabilitation is not as controlled as within a captive military population. In this study, a longitudinal prospective epidemiological database was assessed to determine the incidence of stress fractures and the time taken to rehabilitate recruits to preinjury stage of training.

Data are presented on stress fracture patterns at the Commando Training Center Royal Marines. To reduce the high number of training injuries, including stress fractures, a complete review of the training syllabus was undertaken. Following recommendations from this review, a newly designed, physiologically progressive training program was introduced.
