Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated thrombosis occurrence in healthy soldiers at high altitudes, finding significantly higher rates of both venous and arterial thrombosis compared to near-sea-level environments.
  • Key physiological changes included increased coagulation factors and reduced levels of natural anticoagulants in those with thrombosis, alongside elevated inflammation and endothelial dysfunction markers.
  • These findings suggest that altitude may exacerbate thrombosis risk due to distinct biological mechanisms, highlighting the need for further research and awareness in high-altitude environments.

Background: Surgical staging in endometrial cancer includes a systematic lymphadenectomy with significant morbidity, although its therapeutic role is unclear. Sentinel lymph node (SLN) study is a less morbid alternative to identify nodes most likely to be metastatic, permitting selective removal and thus reducing morbidity without compromising oncological safety. This study was done using blue dye single labelling to study the feasibility and utility in identifying SLN in early disease.

Background: Neonates at risk of hypoglycemia are often roomed in with mothers, but there is paucity of literature on the occurrence of hypoglycemia in these exclusively breastfed high-risk neonates. The primary objective was to estimate the incidence of hypoglycaemia in high-risk neonates on exclusive breastfeeding. The secondary objectives were to study the time of presentation, symptoms of hypoglycaemia, and the various maternal and neonatal risk factors.

Introduction: The data of acute kidney injury (AKI), that is, community-acquired AKI (CA-AKI) and hospital-acquired AKI (HA-AKI) among non-COVID patients from intensive care units (ICU) during the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic are scarce. We planned to study the change in the profile of such patients compared to the pre-pandemic era.

Materials And Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted at four ICUs dealing with non-COVID patients at a government hospital in North India, and was aimed at assessing outcomes, and mortality predictors of AKI among non-COVID patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.

High thoracic epidural analgesia (HTEA) plays a pivotal role in reducing stress and neuroendocrine response in cardiac surgeries. The primary objective is to assess the effect of HTEA, in pediatric cardiac surgery, on inflammatory markers (interleukin [IL]-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-α). The secondary objectives are to assess its effect on various organ systems, that is, pulmonary (PaO2, P/F ratio), renal (Creatinine clearance, somatic near infrared spectroscopy [NIRS], serum neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin values), cardiac (cardiac index, serum Trop-I, and lactate levels), mechanical ventilation duration, and length of stay in hospital (LOS).

Classified Specialist (Surgery) & Urologist, Command Hospital (Eastern Command), Kolkata, India.

Background: Purple urinary bag syndrome (PUBS) is a visually striking and rare manifestation of urinary tract infection characterised by purple discolouration of the catheter and the urobag, which are seen primarily in patients who are on long-term indwelling catheter.
