Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is the most common causative agent of urinary tract infections, and strains that are resistant to antibiotics are a major problem in treating these infections. Phage therapy is a promising alternative approach that can be used to treat infections caused by polyresistant bacterial strains. In the present study, 16 bacteriophages isolated from sewage and surface water were investigated.

Adiponectin, a hormone secreted by adipose tissue, plays a complex role in regulating metabolic homeostasis and has also garnered attention for its potential involvement in the pathogenesis of late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD). The objective of this study was to investigate the association of variants with plasma adiponectin levels and LOAD risk in subjects from the Slovak Caucasian population. For this purpose, 385 LOAD patients and 533 controls without cognitive impairment were recruited and genotyped for a total of eighteen single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).

: Proximal radioulnar synostosis (PRUS) is the most frequent congenital forearm disorder, although the prevalence in the general population is rare with a few hundred cases reported. Pfeiffer, Poland, Holt-Oram, and other serious congenital syndromes contain this abnormality. Non-syndromic cases with isolated PRUS very often exhibit as SMAD6, NOG genes variants, or sex chromosome aneuploidy.

Fever of unknown origin is a common differential diagnostic problem in medicine. More than 60 years have passed since the first established definition of the disease, and despite constant development and improvement of diagnostic procedures, the differential diagnosis and choosing adequate therapy still remains a challenge in this patient population. The medical literature lists at least 200 diseases that may manifest with fever of unknown origin, and it encompasses a wide clinical spectrum.

Dermoid cyst of the parotid gland is a lesion composed of benign tissues of ectodermal and mesodermal origin. Although a dermoid cyst can be encountered across nearly all sites of the body, its location in the head and neck area is quite uncommon and even more unusual inside the parotid gland. We present a case of a patient with gradually enlarging tumour in her right parotid gland who underwent surgical removal of the tumour histologically corresponding to a dermoid cyst.

Polymorphisms in genes encoding receptors that modulate the activity of microglia and macrophages are attractive candidates for participation in genetic susceptibility to multiple sclerosis (MS). The aims of the study were to (1) investigate the association between Alzheimer’s disease-linked variant rs3865444:C>A in the CD33 gene and MS risk, (2) assess the effect of the strongest MS risk allele HLA-DRB1*15:01 on this association, and (3) analyze the correlation of rs3865444 with selected clinical phenotypes, i.e.

Eosinophilia is uncommon in early rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The most frequent causes of hypereosinophilia during RA treatment are atopic eczema, allergy, helminth infection, haematological malignancy and drug-associated complications. The pathogenesis of this abnormality associated with anti-cytokine therapy is still unknown.

Higher probability of the development of Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) as a possible consequence of the north-south gradient has been recently suggested. Living far north or south of the equator is manifested in fluctuation of vitamin D (vitD) levels depending on the season in both healthy and affected individuals. In the present study we investigate the possible link between the seasonal serum vitD level to the microbial composition of the lower gut of Inflammatory Bowel disease (IBD) patients using 16S rRNA sequencing.

The ability of stem cells to self-renew and differentiate into cell types of different lineages forms the basis of regenerative medicine, which focuses on repairing or regenerating damaged or diseased tissues. This has a huge potential to revolutionize medicine. It is anticipated that in future, stem cell therapy will be able to restore function in all major organs.

Tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-mediated signalling plays a key role in inflammatory and neurodegenerative processes leading to the development of multiple sclerosis (MS). Recent studies have highlighted the role of tumour necrosis factor receptor superfamily member 1A (TNFRSF1A) gene encoding the type 1 TNF receptor in the genetic predisposition to MS. This study aimed to validate the association of TNFRSF1A rs1800693 and rs4149584 polymorphisms with susceptibility to MS in the Slovak population and analyse their influence on age at disease onset, severity, and disability progression.

Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation (BPOP) is an unusual lesion mostly affecting the bones of the hand. The mass grows from the bone surface and consists of cartilaginous, osseous and fibrous tissue. The lesion is commonly under/misdiagnosed and confused with other lesions, mostly the osteochondromas.

Radiotherapy is the most commonly used methodology to treat oncological disease, one of the most widespread causes of death worldwide. Oncological patients cured by radiotherapy applied to the mediastinal area have been shown to suffer from cardiovascular disease. The increase in the prevalence of radiation-induced heart disease has emphasized the need to seek new therapeutic targets to mitigate the negative impact of radiation on the heart.
