Maternal mortality data and review are important indicators of the effectiveness of maternity healthcare systems and an impetus for action. Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate near and distance visual acuity (VA) and their correlation with the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25) outcomes in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME) and macular edema due to retinal vein occlusion (RVO) treated with aflibercept.

Methods: In this prospective study, we included 87 eyes of patients diagnosed with DME (n = 61) and RVO (n = 26), who received aflibercept treatment and were followed until the 8th injection. Near VA was examined on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 8th injection, and patients completed the NEI VFQ-25 on the 1st, 4th, and 8th aflibercept injection.

Non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) is increasingly used as a treatment method for patients with respiratory failure. The first recommendations for the use of NIPPV in Slovakia were developed by the Slovak Society of Pulmonology and Phthisiology in 2007 and were partially revised in 2015. New scientific evidence prompted the present update, which is based on widely accepted international guidelines and was adapted to address local needs.

Improvement of adherence to pharmacotherapy in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) is a challenge in routine clinical practice. Our study was aimed at the effect of pillbox organizers with alarms improving adherence to pharmacotherapy and its impact on clinical outcomes. Forty nonadherent patients with PD being treated with ≥ 3 daily doses of levodopa and/or dopamine agonists were pseudorandomized and consecutively ranked to groups A (early-start intervention) and B (delayed-start intervention).

Background: Charcot-Marie-Tooth 1C (CMT1C) is a rare form of dominantly inherited CMT1 neuropathy caused by a mutated gene encoding lipopolysaccharide-induced tumour necrosis alpha factor (LITAF).

Case Presentation: We report a 56-year-old patient with an atypical clinical phenotype of CMT1C, which started as progressive weakness of a single upper limb resembling acquired inflammatory neuropathy. Nerve conduction studies (NCS) and temporarily limited and partial effects of immunotherapy supported the diagnosis of inflammatory neuropathy.

September 2019

Center of Experimental Medicine, Institute for Heart Research, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Dubravska cesta 9, Bratislava 840 05, Slovak Republic.

Hemorheological properties represent significant contributors in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. As plasma vitamin C is inversely associated with blood viscosity in humans, we aimed to characterize the effect of vitamin C supplementation on hemorheology with an emphasis on erythrocyte functions. Twenty young healthy volunteers were asked to take vitamin C (1000 mg per day) for 3 weeks.

Synthetic osmotic dilators in the induction of labour-An international multicentre observational study.

Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol

October 2018

Ex-Medicem International, Prague, Czech Republic. Electronic address:

Introduction: To evaluate the effects of synthetic osmotic dilators (Dilapan-S/ Dilasoft) in women who required induction of labour in a large prospective multicentre international observational study.

Materials And Methods: Primary outcomes were duration of Dilapan-S/Dilasoft insertion (hours), total induction - delivery interval (hours) and the rate of vaginal deliveries within 24 h (%). Secondary outcomes were the number of dilators inserted, Bishop score increase after extraction of Dilapan-S/Dilasoft, complications during induction (uterine contractions, uterine tachysystole and hyperstimulation, effect on the fetus) and post induction (infections and neonatal outcomes), agents / procedures used for subsequent induction of labour, immediate rate of spontaneous labours following cervical ripening period, rate of spontaneous vaginal deliveries, rate of instrumental vaginal deliveries and caesarean sections.
