Objective: The purpose of this review is to identify modifiable risk factors in patients undergoing adult spinal deformity surgery and compile literature recommendations for the preoperative optimization of these risk factors.
Summary Of Background Data: Optimization of modifiable risk factors not only benefits the patient but also lessens resource and cost burdens on the health care system, allowing for better quality and value-based care.

Background: We investigated systemic biochemical changes in Alzheimer's disease (AD) by investigating the relationship between circulating plasma metabolites and both clinical and biomarker-assisted diagnosis of AD.
Methods: We used an untargeted approach with liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry to measure exogenous and endogenous small molecule metabolites in plasma from 150 individuals clinically diagnosed with AD and 567 age-matched elderly without dementia of Caribbean Hispanic ancestry. Plasma biomarkers of AD were also measured including P-tau181, Aβ40, Aβ42, total tau, neurofilament light chain (NfL) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP).

Background: In advanced heart failure patients implanted with a fully magnetically levitated HeartMate 3 (HM3, Abbott) left ventricular assist device (LVAD), it is unknown how preimplant factors and postimplant index hospitalization events influence 5-year mortality in those able to be discharged.
Objectives: The goal was to identify risk predictors of mortality through 5 years among HM3 LVAD recipients conditional on discharge from index hospitalization in the MOMENTUM 3 pivotal trial.
Methods: This analysis evaluated 485 of 515 (94%) patients discharged after implantation of the HM3 LVAD.

Oligodendrocytes are specialized cells that insulate and support axons with their myelin membrane, allowing proper brain function. Here, we identify lamin A/C (LMNA/C) as essential for transcriptional and functional stability of myelinating oligodendrocytes. We show that LMNA/C levels increase with differentiation of progenitors and that loss of Lmna in differentiated oligodendrocytes profoundly alters their chromatin accessibility and transcriptional signature.

Purpose: Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is the most common cause of inherited blindness, with onset occurring as early as 4 years of age in certain rare but severe forms caused by mutations in the gamma subunit of phosphodiesterase 6 (PDE6). Studies in humans and mice have shown that RP pathology begins with progressive photoreceptor death, which then drives changes in downstream neurons, neighboring retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), and vasculature. Here, we present the first detailed analysis of RP disease progression in -deficient mice.

Background: Succinylcholine and rocuronium are the most commonly utilized neuromuscular blocker agents (NMBAs) for rapid sequence intubation (RSI) in the emergency department (ED). The duration of action of rocuronium is significantly longer (∼30 min) compared to succinylcholine (∼10 min) and previous studies have shown that patients receiving rocuronium are more likely to have longer time to sedation initiation following RSI. Furthermore, patients receiving rocuronium may be more likely to experience awareness with paralysis than those receiving succinylcholine.
