Characterization of oral biomarkers during early healing at augmented dental implant sites.

J Periodontal Res

August 2024

Division of Periodontology, Department of Oral Medicine, Infection, and Immunity, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at how certain proteins (biomarkers) that help with healing show up in the mouth after dental surgery using connective tissue grafts (CTG).
  • It involved 28 people who had single dental implants with soft tissue problems, and they were treated in two different ways (CAF and TUN) while checking their healing over 3 months.
  • Important findings showed that some healing proteins (VEGF and TIMP-2) reacted differently depending on the treatment method, and higher levels of these proteins at 7 days were linked to better recovery later on.

Purpose: To determine the effect of restorations with long contact areas for the management of interdental papilla deficiencies, in smile attractiveness among laypersons and dentists.

Material And Methods: A full-portrait image was used to create a set of digitally modified images, simulating the management of various levels of interdental papilla loss. In a total of 48 modified images, single as well as multiple loss of interdental papilla among the anterior teeth, treated with a single or multiple restorations were simulated for unilateral and bilateral situations.

Article Synopsis
  • An estimated 5 billion people worldwide do not have access to safe surgical care, highlighting the need for increased interest in global surgery among medical students.
  • A survey of 708 medical students across 38 US institutions revealed that 34.6% expressed interest in global surgery, with demographic factors like Hispanic/Latino ethnicity and birthplace influencing this interest.
  • Prior experience in low or middle-income countries, along with public health and international service activities, were significant predictors of students' interest in global surgery, suggesting that medical educators should enhance global health opportunities for students.

The field of orthodontics has seen a recent increase in the number of patients over the age of 50 seeking treatment and also an increase in the use of cone beam technology. Similar to other joints in the body, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is associated with age-related degeneration. However, unlike other joints, degeneration of the TMJ is rarely symptomatic and when there is pain, it is usually self-limiting.

Peri-implant soft tissue deficiency (PSTD) is a significant factor impacting aesthetics, particularly in the anterior zone, where labial bone resorption and thin peri-implant phenotypes are common. The occurrence of a gray color around the implant fixture due to PSTD can be aesthetically concerning in the esthetic zone. In cases involving natural teeth, autogenous soft tissue grafts such as subepithelial connective tissue grafts (SCTGs), free gingival grafts (FGGs), and coronally advanced flaps (CAFs) are commonly utilized.

Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) are naturally occurring vesicles that have the potential to be manipulated to become promising drug delivery vehicles for on-demand and gene editing. Here, we developed the modular safeEXO platform, a prototype sEV delivery vehicle that is mostly devoid of endogenous RNA and can efficaciously deliver RNA and ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complexes to their intended intracellular targets manifested by downstream biologic activity. We also successfully engineered producer cells to produce safeEXO vehicles that contain endogenous Cas9 (safeEXO-CAS) to effectively deliver efficient ribonucleoprotein (RNP)-mediated CRISPR genome editing machinery to organs or diseased cells and .

Objectives: To evaluate parent knowledge and belief changes following the MySmileBuddy (MSB) early childhood caries (ECC) intervention.

Methods: Pre- and post-intervention surveys were completed by 669 parents of children with visually-evident ECC from among 977 participants in a 6-12-month pragmatic community-based caries management trial administered by community health workers (CHWs). Six domains of knowledge about caries and motivating and facilitating determinants were assessed via 26 survey items.

Successful Regenerative Therapy of Periodontal Defects Associated With Tongue Piercing: A Clinical Report.

Compend Contin Educ Dent

April 2024

Associate Professor, Division of Periodontics, Section of Oral, Diagnostic and Rehabilitation Sciences, Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, New York, New York.

Oral piercing habits are associated with various degrees of complications. Tongue piercing increases the risk of gingival recession and infrabony defects, subsequently leading to localized periodontitis. In the case presented, the patient had persistent swelling and suppuration around her mandibular anterior teeth attributed to tongue piercing jewelry that was placed approximately 12 years prior.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with mucosal cysts in the maxillary sinus present unique challenges for implant therapy, and the study aims to propose a safe and effective treatment approach for sinus augmentation in these cases.
  • The study involved 15 patients and 18 sinuses, where cyst treatment was performed via needle aspiration alongside maxillary sinus augmentation (MSA), leading to high implant success rates over 1 and 5 years.
  • Results showed minimal bone resorption and a majority of patients remained asymptomatic, indicating that the method of aspirating mucosal cysts while conducting MSA is a promising treatment option.

Glycolytic metabolism may account for antitumor immunity failure. Pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2) and platelet phosphofructokinase (PFKP), two key enzymes involved in the glycolytic pathway, are hyperactivated in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Using ganetespib as a drug model for heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) inhibition and combining results from clinical trials and animal treatment, we demonstrated that HSP90 inhibition leads to a blockade of glycolytic flux in HNSCC cells by simultaneously suppressing PKM2 and PFKP at both the transcriptional and posttranslational levels.

Background: With effective antiretroviral therapy, people with HIV (PWH) are living longer and aging; the majority of PWH in the United States are now over the age of 50 and in women have gone through the menopause transition. Menopause potentiates skeletal bone loss at the spine, hip, and radius in PWH. The alveolar bone which surronds the teeth is different than long bones because it is derived from the neural crest.

Cpne7 deficiency induces cellular senescence and premature aging of dental pulp.

Aging Cell

March 2024

Laboratory for the Study of Regenerative Dental Medicine, Department of Oral Histology-Developmental Biology, School of Dentistry and Dental Research Institute, BK 21, Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea.

Once tooth development is complete, odontoblasts and their progenitor cells in the dental pulp play a major role in protecting tooth vitality from external stresses. Hence, understanding the homeostasis of the mature pulp populations is just as crucial as understanding that of the young, developing ones for managing age-related dentinal damage. Here, it is shown that loss of Cpne7 accelerates cellular senescence in odontoblasts due to oxidative stress and DNA damage accumulation.
