Organ volume measurements are a key metric for managing ADPKD (the most common inherited renal disease). However, measuring organ volumes is tedious and involves manually contouring organ outlines on multiple cross-sectional MRI or CT images. The automation of kidney contouring using deep learning has been proposed, as it has small errors compared to manual contouring.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the effect of early use of neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) on 90-day mortality in COVID-19 patients with moderate-to-severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
  • A sample of 1953 patients from multiple intensive care units was analyzed, comparing those who received NMBAs early to those who did not or received them later.
  • Results show that there was no significant difference in 90-day mortality between the two groups, and while there were some differences in ventilator-free days, they were not conclusive, indicating that early NMBA use may not improve outcomes in this patient population.

J Clin Med

February 2022

Department of Radiology, Weill Cornell Medicine, New York, NY 10065, USA.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) has been associated with cardiac abnormalities including mitral valve prolapse and aneurysmal dilatation of the aortic root. Herein, we investigated the potential association of pericardial effusion with ADPKD. Subjects with ADPKD ( = 117) and control subjects without ADPKD matched for age, gender and renal function ( = 117) undergoing MRI including ECG-gated cine MRI of the aorta and heart were evaluated for pericardial effusion independently by three observers measuring the maximum pericardial effusion thickness in diastole using electronic calipers.

Singapore Eye Research Institute, Singapore National Eye Centre, Duke-NUS Medical School, Singapore; Department of Ophthalmology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, Singapore; Department of Ophthalmology, Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute, Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, New York.

In this retrospective, multicenter study of 261 eyes (259 patients), patients who underwent rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) post-lockdown period experienced an additional 22-day delay, leading to significantly more epiretinal membrane and proliferative vitreoretinopathy and lower single-surgery anatomic success rates. During lockdown, perfluoropropane gas was used more commonly, and pneumatic retinopexy was used more commonly in COVID-19-positive patients.

Ultrawide field, distortion-corrected ocular shape estimation with MHz optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Biomed Opt Express

September 2021

SERI-NTU Advanced Ocular Engineering (STANCE), Singapore, Singapore.

Ocular deformation may be associated with biomechanical alterations in the structures of the eye, especially the cornea and sclera in conditions such as keratoconus, congenital glaucoma, and pathological myopia. Here, we propose a method to estimate ocular shape using an ultra-wide field MHz swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) with a Fourier Domain Mode-Locked (FDML) laser and distortion correction of the images. The ocular biometrics for distortion correction was collected by an IOLMaster 700, and localized Gaussian curvature was proposed to quantify the ocular curvature covering a field-of-view up to 65°×62°.

Expedited Diversion of Criminal Defendants to Court-Ordered Treatment.

J Am Acad Psychiatry Law

December 2021

Dr. Hoge is Clinical Professor and Director, Columbia-Cornell Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program, Department of Psychiatry, New York Psychiatric Institute, Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, New York. Mr. Bonnie is Harrison Foundation Professor of Medicine and Law, and Director, Institute of Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia.

The authors propose a formal statutory diversion process for offenders with serious mental disorders: expedited diversion to court-ordered treatment (EDCOT). As a civil commitment proceeding accompanied by dismissal of criminal charges, EDCOT would not entail a waiver of criminal trial rights and could be invoked even if the defendant lacked trial competence. EDCOT would also be available to authorize civil hospitalization of offenders who are not immediately able to function successfully in the community.
