Introduction: There are many surgical approaches for sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) therapy, ranging from wide excision repair to less morbid excisions with primary/flap closure. The off-midline flaps, which shift the incision line away from the midline natal cleft, have been associated with lower recurrence rates than the conventional mid-line closure techniques. This single-blinded randomized controlled trial aims to compare the short/long-term efficacy and outcome of the slide-swing flap technique with the conventional secondary wound closure.

: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most frequent functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorder. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the different aspects of IBS among Middle Eastern residents. : During the study period, patients attending gastroenterology clinics of nine tertiary referral centers in four Middle Eastern couturiers (Iran, Egypt, Kuwait, and Turkey) were evaluated by Rome IV diagnostic criteria, and those who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria of IBS were asked to fill in a questionnaire covering different demographics and clinical aspects.

GI cancers are a major cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide. Exosomes act as mediators of cell-to-cell communication, with pleiotropic activity in the regulation of homeostasis, and can be markers for diseases.

The significance of volume overload in the development of pulmonary arterial hypertension in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patients.

Introduction: The underlying pathophysiology of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is multifactorial; however, the significance of chronic volume overload and its subsequent effects on cardiac function must be studied thoroughly. The main objective of this study was to determine the predictive parameters of PAH in patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) using transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and bioimpedance analysis (BIA).

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 43 eligible CAPD patients were chosen.

Introduction: Several techniques have been proposed for the closure of loop ileostomy. This is the first study comparing bowel function and outcomes of two different hand-sewn surgical techniques used for the closure of diverting protective loop ileostomy.

Method: In this prospective, randomized, double-blind clinical trial, 40 patients with a history of rectal cancer, low anterior resection, and diverting loop ileostomy who were candidates for ileostomy reversal were included and randomly assigned into two groups, hand-sewn direct repair of the ileal defect (group A) and resection and hand-sewn anastomosis of the ileum (group B).

Methods: MSCs were derived from the umbilical cords and their exosomes were isolated.

Background: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic liver disease and one of the main global health issues in which liver fat surpasses 5% of hepatocytes without the secondary causes of lipid accumulation or excessive alcohol consumption. Owing to the link between NAFLD and insulin resistance (IR) and obesity and the role of resistin in theses metabolic disorders, we explored the possible association between resistin gene (RETN) variant and NAFLD.

Methods: A total of 308 unrelated subjects, including 152 patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD and 156 controls were enrolled and genotyped for the RETN gene rs3745367 variant using PCR-RFLP method.

This study was conducted to evaluate esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) findings in patients with a history of SG with more than 5-year follow-up.

L-Arginine is a feasible supplement to heal chronic anal fissure via reducing internal anal sphincter pressure: a randomized clinical trial study.

The hypertonicity of internal anal sphincter resting pressure is one of the main causes of chronic anal fissure. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the effect of oral administration of L-arginine on the improvement of the anal fissures by relaxing the internal anal sphincter. Seventy-six chronic anal fissure patients (aged 18-65 years) who were referred to Rasoul-e-Akram Hospital, Tehran, Iran from February 2019 to October 2020 participated in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

Epigenetic regulation of gastrointestinal cancers mediated by long non-coding RNAs.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), as well-known modulator of the epigenetic processes, have been shown to contribute to normal cellular physiological and pathological conditions such as cancer. Through the interaction with epigenetic regulators, an aberrant regulation of gene expression can be resulted due to their dysregulation, which in turn, can be involved in tumorigenesis. In the present study, we reviewed the lncRNAs' function and mechanisms that contributed to aberrant epigenetic regulation, which is directly related to gastrointestinal cancer (GI) development and progression.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Success of Bariatric Surgeries in Patients with Severe Obesity.

Introduction: SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19) pandemic may influence the weight outcomes of bariatric surgeries (BS). Here, we intended to compare the weight outcome of patients who underwent BS before and during the pandemic time.

Methods: In a retrospective, single-center study, the information of two groups of patients; first COVID-19 group (n = 51) consisted of those that underwent BS during the pandemic and completed a year of follow-up, second non-COVID-19 group included 50 patients who underwent BS and were followed up before the pandemic.

Background: Considering the limitations of cell therapy, in case of adequate treatment efficacy, conditioned media (CM) may be a desirable alternative to cell therapy. Hence, the present systematic review and meta-analysis aims to evaluate the efficacy of mesenchymal stem cell-derived conditioned media (MSC-CM) in movement resolution following spinal cord injury (SCI) in animal models.

Methods: A comprehensive search in the databases of Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase was completed until the end of March 2021.
