The effect of pomegranate consumption on cardiovascular risk factors in hemodialysis patients: A systematic review of clinical trials.

Phytother Res

November 2023

Department of English Language, School of Health Management and Information Sciences, Center for Educational Research in Medical Sciences (CERMS), Iran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran.

Patients undergoing maintenance dialysis have a significantly higher incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared with the general population. CVD is the most common cause of morbidity and mortality among hemodialysis patients, and has been attributed, among other causes, to increased oxidative stress, inflammation, hypertension and dyslipidemia. Pomegranate, a popular fruit worldwide, has demonstrated health benefits such as antioxidative, antidiabetic, antihypertensive, antihyperlipidemic and anti-inflammatory effects.

Objective: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is an emerging global chronic liver disease, has a close association with insulin resistance. We aimed to determine whether the Gly1057Asp (rs1805097) polymorphism of the insulin receptor substrate 2 (IRS2) gene is associated with NAFLD.

Methods: Using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method, 135 patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD and 135 controls underwent IRS2 genotype analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the PD-L1 molecule affects the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in gastric cancer patients, specifically comparing tumor proportion score (TPS) and combined-positive score (CPS) methods.
  • The analysis of ten articles shows that while patients with TPS scores didn't benefit from ICIs, those with higher CPS scores (≥1, ≥5, ≥10) experienced improved overall survival (OS) compared to those with lower scores.
  • The findings suggest that CPS thresholds are better predictors of treatment success than TPS thresholds for patients receiving PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors, highlighting the potential of Nivolumab to enhance OS and progression-free survival (PFS) significantly.

Background: The role of chest computed tomography (CT) to diagnose coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is still an open field to be explored. The aim of this study was to apply the decision tree (DT) model to predict critical or non-critical status of patients infected with COVID-19 based on available information on non-contrast CT scans.

Methods: This retrospective study was performed on patients with COVID-19 who underwent chest CT scans.

Background And Aims: The Hemorrhoidal Disease Symptom Score (HDSS) is a tool that is scored based on five main symptoms: pain, bleeding, itching, soiling, and prolapse. Furthermore, the Short Health Scale (SHS) is a measurement tool of subjective health and health-related quality of life. This study was performed to validate the Farsi-translated Hemorrhoidal Disease Symptom Score (HDSS), and Scale Short Health Scale adapted for hemorrhoidal disease (SHS-HD) as a measure of symptom severity in patients with hemorrhoid disease.

Background And Aims: Anal fistula (AF) with cryptoglandular origin tends to recur, and multiple risk factors are implicated. Recently, some magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings with predictive value for disease outcomes have been proposed. These intrinsic anatomic features include those of the AF and its surrounding structures.

Objectives: Abdominoperineal resection (APR) is considered the gold standard surgical treatment for ultra-low rectal cancer. Anus-preserving alternative procedures have been tested to avoid the need for a permanent colostomy. The present study compares the functional and oncological outcomes of the traditional APR methods with inter-sphincteric resection (ISR).

Department of Epidemiology, School of Public Health, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Velenjak 7th Floor, Bldg No.2 SBUMS, Arabi Ave, Tehran, 19839-63113, Iran.

Introduction: Fecal incontinence (FI) is caused by external anal sphincter injury. Vitamin E is a potential strategy for anal sphincter muscle repair via its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic, and protective properties against myocyte loss. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the water-soluble form of vitamin E efficacy in repairing anal sphincter muscle defects in rabbits.

Considering the role of visfatin in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a growing global epidemic, this article explores the potential association between the visfatin gene () and NAFLD. We used the PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism method to genotype the rs1319501 promoter variant of the gene in 154 patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD and 158 controls in this case-control genetic association study. The 'CC+TC' genotype of rs1319501 in comparison to the 'TT' genotype occurred less frequently in the cases with NAFLD than the controls, and the difference remained significant after adjustment for confounding factors (p = 0.
