Nature-based solutions have been proven in recent decades as a reliable and cost-effective technology for the treatment of wastewaters. Different plant species have been studied for this purpose, but particular attention has been given to duckweeds, the smallest flowering plant in the world. Duckweed-based systems for simultaneous wastewater treatment and nutrient recovery have the potential to provide sustainable and cost-effective solutions to reduce water pollution and increase nutrient efficiency at catchment level.

Using biowaste-based adsorbents to remove phosphorus (P) from wastewater offers significant benefits concerning eutrophication mitigation and addressing waste management challenges. In this work, Ca-biocomposites were prepared by pyrolysis (700 °C) of a mixture of banana peel (BP) and eggshell (ES). The mass ratio of BP to ES was varied in 2:1, 1:1, and 1:2 ratios.

The main objective of this study is to analyze hazardous elements in nanoparticles (NPs) (smaller than 100 nm) and ultrafine particles (smaller than 1 µm) in Porto Alegre City, southern Brazil using a self-made passive sampler and Sentinel-3B SYN satellite images in 32 collection points. The Aerosol Optical Thickness proportion (T550) identification was conducted using images of the Sentinel-3B SYN satellite at 634 points sampled in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. Focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy analyses were performed to identify chemical elements present in NPs and ultrafine particles, followed by single-stage cascade impactor to be processed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy.

Currently, the large volumes of Sargassum biomass (Sgs) arriving on Caribbean coasts are a problem that must be solved quickly. One alternative is to obtain value-added products from Sgs. In this work, Sgs is demonstrated to be a high-performance Ca - bioadsorbent for phosphate removal by a heat pretreatment at 800 °C that produces biochar.

Potato peel (PP) waste are generated in huge quantities, causing environmental pollution and health problems. Therefore, obtaining value-added products from PP is a current research challenge. In this work, novel Ca-biocomposites for phosphorus (P) removal were prepared by pyrolysis (500-800 °C) using eggshell (ES) and PP (ES/PP = 1:2 ratio by weight).

The element concentrations in the fruitbodies of from two forested upland sites and one lowland site of different geochemical background were compared to topsoil concentrations. The aim of the study was to establish baseline concentration datasets, gain insight into the species' bioconcentration potential and to assess the impact of anthropogenic factors. The validated methods for analysis include inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and cold-vapor atomic absorption spectroscopy (CV-AAS).

The developments in technology have improved access to the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) in different clinical settings. Accordingly, MSUS has been applied to a wide range of musculoskeletal problems including inflammatory and degenerative diseases, sport injuries, and regional pain syndromes both for clinical practice and research. In this report, the authors aimed to globally examine the publications on MSUS among different specialties, countries, and topics.

Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED), as well as associated demographic and clinical features, in men with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), by means of a systematic, standardized evaluation.
Methods: We performed a transversal study in 8 tertiary care centers in Latin America. We included male patients ≥ 16 years who fulfilled ≥ 4 American College of Rheumatology criteria for SLE and had regular sexual activity, and evaluated them with the International Index of Erectile Function-5 questionnaire.

Natural antibacterial clays can inhibit growth of human pathogens; therefore, understanding the antibacterial mode of action may lead to new applications for health. The antibacterial modes of action have shown differences based on mineralogical constraints. Here we investigate a natural clay from the Colombian Amazon (AMZ) known to the Uitoto natives as a healing clay.

Objectives: Vorinostat or suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA) is a novel histone deacetylase inhibitor with demonstrated antiproliferative effects due to drug-induced accumulation of acetylated proteins, including the heat shock protein 90. We prospectively studied the activity of vorinostat plus erlotinib in EGFR-mutated NSCLC patients with progression to tyrosine kinase inhibitors.
Patients And Methods: We conducted this prospective, non-randomized, multicenter, phase I/II trial to evaluate the maximum tolerated dose, toxicity profile and efficacy of erlotinib and vorinostat.

Background: Aortocaval compression is a major cause of maternal hypotension. A randomized controlled trial was designed to determine the effectiveness of a mechanical intervention using a right lumbar-pelvic wedge in preventing hypotension after spinal anesthesia for cesarean delivery.
Methods: Eighty healthy women undergoing elective cesarean section were randomly allocated immediately after spinal blockade to either a lumbar-pelvic wedge positioned under the right posterior-superior iliac crest (Wedge group, n=40) or the complete supine position (Supine group, n=40).

Background: The efficacy of non-narcotic analgesics is mostly supported by randomized, placebo-controlled trials with no comparison with ordinary practice. Additionally, systematic reviews of these placebo-controlled trials have failed to determine clinically meaningful dose-response effect.
Methods: In this double-blind, randomized trial, patients undergoing elective inguinal, umbilical or epigastric herniorrhaphy under general anesthesia were assigned to receive 15 mg/kg (D15 group) vs.

A growing number of studies have demonstrated an association between serum levels of insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) and IGF binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) and increased risk for various cancers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between levels of IGF-II or IGFBP-3 in cervical scrapes with cervical cancer and precancerous lesions: low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL). 4 groups of cases were examined: LSIL (n=20), HSIL (n=28), cervical cancer (n=45), and controls (n=51).

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Taiuiá or tayuya (Cayaponia tayuya, Cucurbitaceae) is a climbing, lignified plant with a large swollen root that has traditionally been used as an anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic agent in the folk medicine of Brazil, Peru, and Colombia.
The Aim Of The Study: We have assayed the pharmacological properties of a flavonoid fraction obtained from the butanol extract of Cayaponia tayuya roots using two models of topical mouse ear oedema, paying special attention to its influence on the induction on pro-inflammatory enzymes and peptidic mediators.
Material And Methods: The in vivo experiments involved both the acute oedema induced by a single application of TPA and the subchronic inflammation brought on by repeated applications of TPA.
