Departamento de Química Orgánica y Bio-Orgánica, Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED), Avenida de Esparta s/n, Las Rozas de Madrid 28232, Spain. Electronic address:

Magnetite nanoparticles have been successfully used for removal and immobilization of contaminants in water, yet their application in soils combined with in situ magnetic separation remains unexplored. We evaluated the effectiveness and optimal conditions for using magnetite nanoparticles combined with magnetic separation to remove metal(loid)s from contaminated mine soils. Soil samples were incubated (15, 45 days) with varying doses of magnetite (0, 25, 50 g kg⁻¹) and moisture (dry, field capacity) and separated using electromagnet or permanent magnet.

We consider a discrete-time Markovian random walk with resets on a connected undirected network. The resets, in which the walker is relocated to randomly chosen nodes, are governed by an independent discrete-time renewal process. Some nodes of the network are target nodes, and we focus on the statistics of first hitting of these nodes.

Random walks with long-range memory on networks.

Chaos

January 2025

Instituto de Física, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico City 04510, Mexico.

We study an exactly solvable random walk model with long-range memory on arbitrary networks. The walker performs unbiased random steps to nearest-neighbor nodes and intermittently resets to previously visited nodes in a preferential way such that the most visited nodes have proportionally a higher probability to be chosen for revisit. The occupation probability can be expressed as a sum over the eigenmodes of the standard random walk matrix of the network, where the amplitudes slowly decay as power-laws at large times, instead of exponentially.

In this study, we utilized drinking water treatment sludge (WTS) to produce adsorbents through the drying and calcination process. These adsorbents were then evaluated for their ability to remove azithromycin (AZT) from aqueous solutions. The L-500 adsorbent, derived from the calcination (at 500°C) of WTS generated under conditions of low turbidity in the drinking water treatment plant, presented an increase in the specific surface area from 70.

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder principally manifested as motor disabilities. In clinical practice, diagnostic rating scales are available for broadly measuring, classifying, and characterizing the disease progression. Nonetheless, these scales depend on the specialist's expertise, introducing a high degree of subjectivity.

Background: Heterogeneity of treatment effects (HTEs) can occur because of either differential treatment compliance or differential treatment effectiveness. This distinction is important, as it has action implications, but it is unclear how to distinguish these two possibilities statistically in precision treatment analysis given that compliance is not observed until after randomization. We review available statistical methods and illustrate a recommended method in secondary analysis in a trial focused on HTE.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is mainly managed with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), but this often leads to a dormant state and subsequent relapse as lethal castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). Using our unique PCa patient-derived xenograft (PDX) dormancy models, we investigated this critical dormant phase and discovered a selective increase in B7-H4 expression during the dormancy period following mouse host castration. This finding is supported by observations in clinical specimens of PCa patients treated with ADT.
