Biological relatedness is a key consideration in studies of behavior, population structure, and trait evolution. Except for parent-offspring dyads, pedigrees capture relatedness imperfectly. The number and length of identical-by-descent DNA segments (IBD) yield the most precise relatedness estimates.

Advances in the field of genetics and genomics have had a great impact on the clinical practice of the pediatric nephrologist. Access to diagnostic genetic studies for renal pathologies allows not only to confirm specific diagnoses, but also to provide management and follow-up strategies, knowledge about prognosis, and prevention of complications. In addition, it provides genetic counseling to the patient and family and even helps to make decisions about family donor transplantation.

Unlabelled: Omphalocele-exstrophy-imperforate anus-spinal defects (OEIS) complex is a rare entity that presents abdominal wall defects, entails high morbidity and mortality, and requires multidisciplinary management.
Objective: To describe a case with an unusual association between OEIS complex and diaphragmatic hernia and to discuss its pathogenesis and possible association with other midline malformations.
Clinical Case: A preterm female newborn of 33 weeks of gestational age, with prenatal diagnosis of giant omphalocele that, at birth, presented intact amnion coverture containing the entire liver and some bowel loops, open bladder exstrophy and exposed urethral orifices; uterus didelphys, no palpable gonads, and concurrent imaging findings of pelvic soft tissue extrusion, left diaphragmatic hernia (Bochdalek), multiple bone defects, myelomeningocele, and myelocystocele.

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have recently achieved over 26% power conversion efficiency, challenging the dominance of silicon-based alternatives. This progress is significantly driven by innovations in hole transport materials (HTMs), which notably influence the efficiency and stability of PSCs. However, conventional organic HTMs like PTAA, although highly efficient, suffer from thermal degradation, moisture ingress, and high cost.

A green methodology for the synthesis of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) from coffee husk without the use of any toxic solvents is proposed in this work. Sonochemical exfoliation of biochar, obtained from the thermal carbonization of coffee husk (from a certified coffee seeds) at low temperature in an air-restricted atmosphere, is described as an alternative procedure for the sustainable production of CQDs. The synthesized CQDs exhibited blue fluorescence with a strong maximum emission band at 410 nm when excited at a maximum absorption wavelength of 330 nm.

We present a modeling strategy to forecast the incidence rate of dengue in the department of Córdoba, Colombia, thereby considering the effect of climate variables. A Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average model with exogenous variables (SARIMAX) model is fitted under a cross-validation approach, and we examine the effect of the exogenous variables on the performance of the model. This study uses data of dengue cases, precipitation, and relative humidity reported from years 2007 to 2021.

Background: Low-value care refers to the provision of health services that confer little or no benefit to patients, or have the potential to incur unwarranted harms. A breadth of literature exists investigating geographical variations in rates of potential low-value interventions for musculoskeletal pain. This scoping review aimed to examine the provision of low-value care for osteoarthritis and lower back pain by degree of rurality (e.

Recent research suggests that performance on Statistical Learning (SL) tasks may be lower in children with dyslexia in deep orthographies such as English. However, it is debated whether the observed difficulties may vary depending on the modality and stimulus of the task, opening a broad discussion about whether SL is a domain-general or domain-specific construct. Besides, little is known about SL in children with dyslexia who learn transparent orthographies, where the transparency of grapheme-phoneme correspondences might reduce the reliance on implicit learning processes.

Biological control, which utilizes nematophagous fungi to reduce gastrointestinal nematode populations, may effectively diminish the need for chemical anthelmintic treatments. However, the limited knowledge surrounding the mass production of chlamydospores hinders the widespread use of biological products as alternatives to traditional anthelmintics. This study aimed to evaluate the development of liquid culture media for the large-scale production of the nematophagous fungi Duddingtonia flagrans using a systematic procedure, progressing from microplates to bioreactor.

Objectives: Despite the increasing investments in Latin American healthcare, the corresponding improvement in population health is not proportional. This discrepancy may be attributed to the efficiency of resource utilization. This study used the data envelopment analysis (DEA) methodology to assess the efficiency of healthcare systems in 23 Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Unlike most rivers globally, nearly all lowland Amazonian rivers have unregulated flow, supporting seasonally flooded floodplain forests. Floodplain forests harbor a unique tree species assemblage adapted to flooding and specialized fauna, including fruit-eating fish that migrate seasonally into floodplains, favoring expansive floodplain areas. Frugivorous fish are forest-dependent fauna critical to forest regeneration via seed dispersal and support commercial and artisanal fisheries.

Rabies is a zoonotic infectious disease of global distribution that impacts human and animal health. In rural Latin America, rabies negatively impacts food security and the economy due to losses in livestock production. The common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, is the main reservoir and transmitter of rabies virus (RABV) to domestic animals in Latin America.

Context: This study meticulously examines the criteria for assigning electron rearrangements along the intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) leading to bond formation and breaking processes during the pyrolytic isomerization of cubane (CUB) to 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene (COT) from both thermochemical and bonding perspectives. Notably, no cusp-type function was detected in the initial thermal conversion step of CUB to bicyclo[4.2.

Objective: The goal of a decompressive craniectomy (DC) or a hinge craniotomy (HC), is to treat intracranial hypertension and reduce mortality. Traditionally, the decompression procedure has been performed with cranial bone removal. However, decompression and repositioning the cranial bone, named HC, has been presented as an alternative for certain cases.

This paper develops the methodological concept of river co-learning arenas (RCAs) and explores their potential to strengthen innovative grassroots river initiatives, enliven river commons, regenerate river ecologies, and foster greater socio-ecological justice. The integrity of river systems has been threatened in profound ways over the last century. Pollution, damming, canalisation, and water grabbing are some examples of pressures threatening the entwined lifeworlds of human and non-human communities that depend on riverine systems.

Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) is a useful technology for anterior segment surgery that creates cleavage planes via photodisruption of ocular tissue. Compared to conventional cataract surgery, FLACS has been thought to potentially improve surgical precision, accuracy, and reproducibility. Its introduction into cataract surgery has enabled the development of new techniques and has been purported to be potentially beneficial in improving surgical safety and providing quicker visual rehabilitation.
