Real-World Treatment Patterns and Healthcare Resource Use for Patients with Myelofibrosis: Results from the METER Study.

Myelofibrosis (MF) is a myeloproliferative neoplasm that was most commonly treated with hydroxyurea (HU) prior to approval of ruxolitinib (RUX), now the standard of care. Factors that influence changes in MF treatment in real-world settings are not well understood. The METER study (NCT05444972) was a multi-country retrospective chart review of MF treatment patterns, treatment effectiveness, and healthcare resource utilization.

Diatoms-endoparasite association in fish from the marine pacific coast of Colombia (Buenaventura).

The association of parasites and diatoms has been previously reported as an important mechanism to control bacteria and parasites to avoid resistance to chemical usage. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between diatoms genus and parasites within the gastrointestinal compartments (GICs) of commercial fish in fisheries of the marine Pacific coast of Colombia (Buenaventura). A total of 104 GICs from marine fish were sampled.

Understanding tree defence mechanisms requires evaluating metabolic changes arising during infection. However, taxon sampling for alkaloids has been biased towards colorful species, without similar attention paid to inconspicuous ones that are often assumed to be undefended.

Gender and Intersecting Barriers and Facilitators to Access the HIV Cascade of Care in Manitoba, Canada, Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Study.

Marginalized groups in Manitoba, Canada, especially females and people who inject drugs, are overrepresented in new HIV diagnoses and disproportionately affected by HIV and structural disadvantages. Informed by syndemic theory, our aim was to understand people living with HIV's (PLHIV) gendered and intersecting barriers and facilitators across the cascade of HIV care before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study was co-designed and co-led alongside people with lived experience and a research advisory committee.

Oral cavity cancer, a subtype of head and neck cancer, is one of the most common malignancies globally. This study assessed the influence of health system affiliation and pain manifestation on the risk of advanced oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) in a Latin American population. In this retrospective cohort study, we analyzed medical records from 2015 to 2016, including data from the past 19 years, of 233 patients with OCSCC treated at a public hospital in Medellín, Colombia.

Brunelli (Dorsoulnar) Flap for the Reconstruction of Defect of the Thumb Nail Unit After Oncological Resections With Mohs Micrographic Surgery.

Background: The Brunelli flap is an option in the reconstruction of the thumb after trauma or oncological resections. The arc of movement of the flap makes it possible to resolve defects in the proximal, palmar, dorsal, and lateral regions.

Methods: We present a case series of 11 patients in whom a Brunelli flap was performed for postoncological reconstruction, melanoma in situ, and invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the thumb nail unit associated with Mohs micrographic surgery.

Quality of pediatric trauma care: development of an age-adjusted TRISS model and survival benchmarking in a major trauma center.

Background: Pediatric trauma is a major global health concern, accounting for a substantial proportion of deaths and disease burden from age 5 onwards. Effective triage and management are essential in pediatric trauma care, and prediction models such as the Trauma Injury Severity Score (TRISS) play a crucial role in estimating survival probability and guiding quality improvement. However, TRISS does not account for age-specific factors in pediatric populations, limiting its applicability to younger patients.

Monkeypox virus infection in pregnancy: description of two cases reported to the Colombian National Institute of Health.

Monkeypox (mpox), caused by the MPOXV (monkeypox virus), has been endemic in Africa since its first identification in 1958. However, in May 2022, the world witnessed the first global outbreak associated with the West African clade. Even though thousands of cases have been recorded, our understanding of vertical transmission during pregnancy remains restricted due to an absence of reported cases in pregnant women and a lack of adequate clinical descriptions.

The Subjective Experience of Social Stigma on Mental Health among Cisgender Women Sex Workers in Colombia.

This qualitative and phenomenological study, through 16 in-depth face-to-face interviews and two discussion groups, elucidates the subjective experience of social stigma on mental health among 34 cisgender women sex workers in Colombia. After reflective and inductive thematic analysis of the data, two general themes emerged with their respective subthemes: (1) institutional stigma, insensitivity of healthcare providers, abuse of power by the police force, societal disapproval of the occupation, and unequal social treatment; (2) interpersonal stigma, language as a perpetrator of social stigma, family abandonment, conflict with work identity, and social isolation. A holistic approach is needed that addresses unmet needs and high vulnerability to deterioration of mental well-being due to social stigma against this group.

Love as a Commitment Device : Evidence from a Cross-Cultural Study across 90 Countries.

Given the ubiquitous nature of love, numerous theories have been proposed to explain its existence. One such theory refers to love as a commitment device, suggesting that romantic love evolved to foster commitment between partners and enhance their reproductive success. In the present study, we investigated this hypothesis using a large-scale sample of 86,310 individual responses collected across 90 countries.

Cigarette butts are classified as plastic waste due to their composition of cellulose acetate fibers and are commonly found in beach sand. Their persistence in the environment, low biodegradability, and potential to interact with metals and metalloids during the aging process make them a significant subject of interest for research on coastal marine ecosystems. The aim of this study is to investigate the presence of metals such as hexavalent chromium Cr (VI), cadmium (Cd), and the metalloid arsenic (As) in cigarette butts (CBs), cigarette butt fibers (CBFs), and sand on a tourist beach in Cartagena, Colombia.

Dendropsophusis one of the most species-rich genera of treefrogs. Recent studies integrating Sanger-generated mitochondrial and nuclear loci with phenomic characters (SP) have advanced understanding of this clade, but questions about its internal relationships and biogeographic history persist. To address these questions, we used anchored hybrid enrichment (AHE) to combine 432 nuclear loci for 78 taxa (72 % of species) with published data.

Practical application of multimodality imaging for cardio-oncology in Latin America.

Latin America (LA) is one of the regions in the world with the highest levels of overweight, dyslipidemia, and diabetes mellitus, which, together with smoking and high blood pressure, are common risk factors for cardiovascular and oncological diseases. Chemotherapy (CT) and Radiotherapy (RT) have become two of the mainstays of treatment for several types of cancer. One of the most worrisome side effects generated by CT and RT is cardiotoxicity.

Development of a diagnostic multivariable prediction model of a positive SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR result in healthcare workers with suspected SARS-CoV-2 infection in hospital settings.

Background: Despite declining COVID-19 incidence, healthcare workers (HCWs) still face an elevated risk of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. We developed a diagnostic multivariate model to predict positive reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) results in HCWs with suspected SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study on episodes involving suspected SARS-CoV-2 symptoms or close contact among HCWs in Bogotá, Colombia.
