Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major public health concern worldwide, contributing to high rates of injury-related death and disability. Severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI), although it accounts for only 10% of all TBI cases, results in a mortality rate of 30-40% and a significant burden of disability in those that survive. This study explored the potential of metabolomics in the diagnosis of sTBI and explored the potential of metabolomics to examine probable primary and secondary brain injury in sTBI.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma are the two most prevalent chronic respiratory diseases, significantly impacting public health. Utilizing clinical questionnaires to identify and differentiate patients with COPD and asthma for further diagnostic procedures has emerged as an effective strategy to address this issue. We developed a new diagnostic tool, the COPD-Asthma Differentiation Questionnaire (CAD-Q), to differentiate between COPD and asthma in adults.

Characteristics, outcomes and treatment patterns in acute myeloid leukemia patients 60 years or older in Colombia: a RENEHOC-PETHEMA study.

There is a limited information available on the clinical characteristics, treatment patterns and outcomes on older patients diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) in Latin-America. This multicenter retrospective study analyzed 269 patients over 60 years of age diagnosed with AML in Colombia, using data from RENEHOC-PETHEMA registry, from 2009 to 2023. The median age at diagnosis was 70 years (Range:60-98), 55% were men, 61% had an ECOG < 2, and 75.

Small and medium-scale biorefineries are processing facilities designed to produce a portfolio of value-added products with applications in different productive sectors. The Territory of the Southern Coast (TSC) of Bahia in Brazil has a high potential to provide agricultural and forest biomass for these bioindustries. This study focuses on quantifying the biomass of key agricultural crops in the TSC from 1999 to 2019, utilizing data from the Municipal Agricultural Production (MAP) survey conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

Background: In post-conflict Guatemala, Indigenous men's psychological distress has been linked to violence exposure, disrupted social support systems, and structural inequities.

Purpose: We aimed to document how communities themselves understand men's wellbeing and the factors that influence men's wellbeing.

Research Design And Study Sample: Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping with 20 stakeholder groups in Santiago Atitlán and Cuilco, Guatemala defined men's wellbeing in local terms and identified the influences community groups understood to promote and detract from men's wellbeing.

Landscape characteristics are known to determine the epidemiology of transmission of these parasites in the wild, but the strength of these factors may differ at different spatial scales.

Active transportation is associated with lower obesity risk: generalized structural equations model applied to physical activity.

This study aimed to identify latent (unobservable) dimensions representing specific physical activity-related behaviors and explore their potential effects on obesity burden and spatial distribution in Colombia. A cross-sectional study (n = 9,658) was conducted based on the Colombian National Survey of Nutritional Status. A generalized structural equations model was proposed, combining exposure and measurement models to define a disease model.

Clinical Case: We present the case of a prenatally diagnosed hepato-omphalocele, without associated abnormalities. At week 37, botulinum toxin was injected in the right hemiabdomen under fetal and maternal sedation.

Neutral and ionic Co(II) metal-organic frameworks with 2-methylimidazole and trimesate: design and evaluation for molecule encapsulation and slow release.

Two Co(II) mixed-ligand metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on 2-methylimidazole and trimesate were synthesised at room temperature. The structure and properties of the two MOFs, named material Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron-1 and -2 (mDESY-1 and mDESY-2), were verified by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), SQUID magnetic susceptibility and N adsorption. The structural analysis indicates that mDESY-1 is a 3D ionic framework with 2-methyl-1-imidazol-3-ium counterions residing in its pores, while mDESY-2 is a 2D neutral framework isostructural to ITH-1, with water as a co-crystallising solvent.

Chemical and Enzymatic Mechanosynthesis of Organocatalytic Peptide Materials Based on Proline and Phenylalanine.

In recent years, mechanosynthesis of peptides through either chemical or enzymatic routes has been accomplished. In part, this advancement has been driven due to the organocatalytic properties of peptide-based biomaterials. In this work, we report the merging of chemical and enzymatic protocols under mechanochemical conditions to synthesize peptide materials based on L-proline and L-phenylalanine.

ColombiaTuitionSET: Labeled dataset for exploring socioeconomic status, career selection, and tuition fees at a Colombian public university.

This dataset examines the interplay between socioeconomic status and educational outcomes among students at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Collected from publicly available data in collaboration with the National Directorate of Information, the dataset includes anonymized records of 3361 students from multiple university campuses during the first semester of 2021. It captures a diverse array of socioeconomic and academic variables, such as family income, residence type, tuition fee, and career choice, providing a unique basis for studying educational access in Colombia.

Atmospheric corrosion of carbon and galvanized steel under high rainfall conditions.

The corrosion rates of carbon steel and galvanized steel according to the ISO 9223 standard, the effect of pollutant contamination and atmospheric aggressiveness under high rainfall conditions in the Chocó department were studied. Carbon and galvanized steel samples, chloride, and sulfur collectors were exposed in three atmospheric stations in three strategic positions covering the Colombian Pacific: Quibdó, Andagoya and Bahía Solano, for different exposure periods (up to 18 months). The structural-micro characterization of corrosion products was evaluated via X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy SEM-EDS.

Mental health risk communication and community participation among an Indigenous people in Colombia.

Objectives: To describe and analyze a community participation process to develop recommendations for adequate communication of mental health risks among the Wayuú people of Colombia.

Methods: This qualitative study conducted focus groups in the Indigenous cities of Albania and Uribia, Colombia, from January to June 2024, to assess perspectives on mental health risk communication. Participants were adults (>18 years) residing in two municipalities in La Guajira (Uribia and Albania [the Indigenous capital of Colombia]) and included youth group leaders, Indigenous representatives, migrant population representatives, and representatives of official institutions in the region.

Marijuana poisoning in canines is still considered a taboo topic. Poisoning in pets is becoming increasingly common, in many cases resulting in severe clinical signs, such as ataxia, urinary incontinence, mydriasis, depression, and hyperesthesia. Colombia does not have any reliable test for the diagnosis of exposure to cannabis in animals, and it is not an obligation to report this kind of poisoning to the authorities.

Position Statement: The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) presents this position based on a critical examination of the literature surrounding the effects of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (ω-3 PUFA) supplementation on exercise performance, recovery, and brain health. This position stand is intended to provide a scientific foundation for athletes, dietitians, trainers, and other practitioners regarding the effects of supplemental ω-3 PUFA in healthy and athletic populations. The following conclusions represent the official position of the ISSN: Athletes may be at a higher risk for ω-3 PUFA insufficiency.

Governance and resilience as entry points for transforming food systems in the countdown to 2030.

Due to complex interactions, changes in any one area of food systems are likely to impact-and possibly depend on-changes in other areas. Here we present the first annual monitoring update of the indicator framework proposed by the Food Systems Countdown Initiative, with new qualitative analysis elucidating interactions across indicators. Since 2000, we find that 20 of 42 indicators with time series have been trending in a desirable direction, indicating modest positive change.

Maternal and fetal outcomes in Latin American SLE pregnancies: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) predominantly affects women, especially during their reproductive years, leading to increased risks during pregnancy. Latina women develop SLE at a younger age, which increases their susceptibility to pregnancy complications such as pre-eclampsia, preterm birth and fetal growth restriction.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to systematically review maternal and fetal outcomes in pregnant Latina women with SLE and to perform a meta-analysis to assess specific risks associated with the disease.

Biological relatedness is a key consideration in studies of behavior, population structure, and trait evolution. Except for parent-offspring dyads, pedigrees capture relatedness imperfectly.
