Introduction: Various clinical studies found that enzymatic debridement (EDNX) is superior to tangential excision after severe burns. The current study evaluates patients' satisfaction with pain management in EDNX with special respect to different anesthesia techniques.
Methods: Between 2015 and 2016, all patients at a department of plastic surgery were asked to complete a German-wide validated pain questionnaire.

For many, work with a surgical society seems like something neither generally promising nor personally worthwhile, thus raising the question, why bother? This article sets out to show examples of the effects that surgical societies and young surgeon committees can have on surgery and residency training. Additionally, we highlight the personal side of being active on a committee.

Background: The employment of the O-arm for intraoperative localization of deep brain stimulation (DBS) leads has been shown to be feasible and effective. However, partial volume artifacts impede the determination of individual electrode contacts and thus allow only an indirect approximation of each contact's localization.
Objective: To reduce the partial volume artifacts by means of high-resolution (HiRes) reconstruction of O-arm data and thus allow more accurate predictions with regard to the positioning and orientation of individual DBS contacts.

Background: The "post-paralytic syndrome" after facial nerve reconstruction has been attributed to (i) malfunctioning axonal guidance at the fascicular (branches) level, (ii) collateral branching of the transected axons at the lesion site, and (iii) intensive intramuscular terminal sprouting of regenerating axons which causes poly-innervation of the neuromuscular junctions (NMJ).
Objective: The first two reasons were approached by an innovative technique which should provide the re-growing axons optimal conditions to elongate and selectively re-innervate their original muscle groups.
Methods: The transected facial nerve trunk was inserted into a 3-way-conduit (from isogeneic rat abdominal aorta) which should "guide" the re-growing facial axons to the three main branches of the facial nerve (zygomatic, buccal and marginal mandibular).

Insufficient recovery after injury of a peripheral motor nerve is due to (1) inappropriate pathfinding as a result of axonal regrowth to inappropriate targets, (2) excessive collateral axonal branching at the lesion site, and (3) polyinnervation of the neuromuscular junctions (NMJs). The rat facial nerve model is often used because of its simple and reliable readout to measure recovery of function (vibrissal whisking). Over the last decades scientists have concentrated their efforts to combat mostly NMJ polyinnervation, because it turned out to be very difficult to reduce collateral axonal branching and impossible to navigate thousands of axons toward the original fascicles.

Objectives: Despite its efficacy in tremor-suppression, the ventral intermediate thalamic (VIM) nucleus has largely been neglected in deep brain stimulation (DBS) for tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease (tdPD). The employment of a parietal approach, however, allows stimulation of VIM and subthalamic nucleus (STN) using one trajectory only and thus constitutes a promising alternative to existing strategies. In the present study, we investigate safety and efficacy of combined lead implantation and stimulation of STN and VIM using a parietal approach.

Severe spinal cord injuries cause permanent neurological deficits and are still considered as inaccessible to efficient therapy. Injured spinal cord axons are unable to spontaneously regenerate. Background/aims: Technological advancements had a serious impact on the evolution of robotic systems in stereotactic neurosurgery over the last three decades and may turn robot-assisted stereotactic neurosurgery into a sophisticated alternative to purely mechanical guiding devices.
Objectives: To compare robot-assisted and conventional frame-based deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery with regard to accuracy, precision, reliability, duration of surgery, intraoperative imaging quality, safety and maintenance using a standardized setup.
Methods: Retrospective evaluation of 80 consecutive patients was performed who underwent DBS surgery using either a frame-based mechanical stereotactic guiding device (n = 40) or a stereotactic robot (ROSA Brain, MedTech, Montpellier, France) (n = 40).

Background: Patient-reported outcome measures are a critical tool in evaluating the efficacy of orthopedic procedures. The intention of this study was to compare the psychometric properties of the Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire (MOXFQ) and the Self-Reported Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (SEFAS) in patients with foot or ankle surgery.
Methods: 177 patients completed both scores and FAOS, Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS), Short Form 36 (SF-36) and numeric scales for pain and disability (NRS) before and after surgery.

Modern procedures like PCR have been reported to diagnose bacterial colonization with a high degree of accuracy. An enzyme mixture containing bromelain (NexoBrid®) was found to be suitable for enzymatic debridement of burn wounds, as determined by the criteria of patient comfort and pain, selectivity, and efficiency. Nevertheless, daily experience showed that pretreatment of burn wounds with several other clinical agents may inhibit debridement efficiency. Therefore, the current study was performed to identify those agents and evaluate their debridement inhibition capabilities.
