The indigenous chicken production system (ICPS) has several use values and ecosystem services. In the last few years, ICPS has been recognized for its possible contribution to household food security, income generation, wildlife protection, and bettering the women's lives. This study aimed to collect, for the first time, comprehensive information about ICPS in three different agro-ecologies (tropical, sub-tropical, and sub-temperate) of the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) and its role in food and economic security of traditional communities.

Dogs with canine parvovirus enteritis (CPVE) that develop systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) frequently have a poor prognosis. The aim of the study was to assess the prognostic potential of thrombocyte indices, acute phase proteins, electrolytes, and acid-base markers in CPVE puppies with SIRS (CPVE-SIRS+) at admission. A case-controlled, prospective, and observational study was performed on 36 CPVE puppies.

A prospective randomized controlled clinical study was conducted to determine whether antioxidant supplementation as an adjunct therapy alters hemogram, oxidative stress, serum intestinal fatty acid binding protein-2 (IFABP-2) level, fecal viral load, clinical score (CS) and survivability in outpatient canine parvovirus enteritis (CPVE) dogs. The dogs with CPVE were randomized to one of the five treatment groups: supportive treatment (ST) alone, ST with N-acetylcysteine (ST+NAC), resveratrol (ST+RES), coenzyme Q10 (ST+CoQ10) or ascorbic acid (ST+AA). The primary outcome measures were reduction of CS and fecal HA titre, and enhancement of survivability.

Candidate genes and proteins regulating bull semen quality: a review.

Poor semen profile reflected by suboptimum fertility statistics is a concern in bulls reared for breeding purpose. A critical review of research on candidate genes and proteins associated with semen quality traits will be useful to understand the progress of molecular marker development for bull semen quality traits. Here, we have tabulated and classified candidate genes and proteins associated with bull semen quality based on a literature survey.

Genetic characterisation of indigenous duck of Tripura state in India using microsatellite markers.

Exploring genetic variability by microsatellite markers is essential for genetic improvement, preservation of indigenous germplasm and production of high-quality offspring. Lack of information on microsatellite profiling of Indian indigenous ducks (Tripura state) has stoked curiosity in this work. Genomic DNA samples from randomly selected 36 native ducks were analysed at 25 duck-specific microsatellite loci.

Morphologic appearance of peripheral blood cells from Zovawk pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) visualized by transmission electron microscopy.

Background: Ultrastructural information regarding the peripheral blood cells of local (Zovawk) pigs from Mizoram, India, is not available in the scientific literature.

Objectives: The present study was designed to reveal the fine structural details of the blood cells from these local pigs using a transmission electron microscope (TEM).

Methods: Blood samples were collected from 12 healthy Zovawk pigs of either sex and processed according to a standard protocol.

Large animal models of cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury: Where are we now?

Large animal models of cardiac ischemia-reperfusion are critical for evaluation of the efficacy of cardioprotective interventions prior to clinical translation. Nonetheless, current cardioprotective strategies/interventions formulated in preclinical cardiovascular research are often limited to small animal models, which are not transferable or reproducible in large animal models due to different factors such as: (i) complex and varied features of human ischemic cardiac disease (ICD), which are challenging to mimic in animal models, (ii) significant differences in surgical techniques applied, and (iii) differences in cardiovascular anatomy and physiology between small versus large animals. This article highlights the advantages and disadvantages of different large animal models of preclinical cardiac ischemic reperfusion injury (IRI), as well as the different methods used to induce and assess IRI, and the obstacles faced in using large animals for translational research in the settings of cardiac IR.

Effect of systemic inflammatory response syndrome on thrombocytogram, acute phase proteins, electrolytes, acid-base indices and cytokine expression in naturally canine parvovirus infected dogs.

Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) in canine parvoviral enteritis (CPVE) is associated with high mortality in young puppies. Changes in acute phase response, thrombocytogram, inflammatory cytokine profiles, and disturbances in electrolyte and acid-base homeostasis are thought to have a significant impact on the development of SIRS. However, the mechanisms causing these perturbations have not been well described in CPVE puppies, especially with SIRS.
