Background: Korean Red Ginseng extract (RGE) has been reported to act as an inflammasome modulator. Ginsenosides, saponin molecules of RGE, selectively inhibit activation of NLRP3 and AIM2 inflammasomes, while non-saponin molecules of RGE upregulate inflammasome components associated with the initiation of NLRP3 inflammasome activation. In this study, we investigated the effect of non-saponin components of RGE on AIM2 inflammasome activation.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a disease that causes blindness due to vascular leakage or abnormal angiogenesis. Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is increased in the serum or vitreous fluid in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) patients, although the effect of HGF on the blood vessels remains unclear. This study focused on the effect of HGF on pericyte (PC) survival and endothelial cell (EC) permeability.

Riboflavin is commonly taken as a nutritional supplement, and it converts to coenzymes during the process of energy production from carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Although riboflavin is considered to be an anti-inflammatory vitamin because of its antioxidant properties, the effects of riboflavin on inflammasome have been not reported. Inflammasome, a cytosolic surveillance protein complex, leads to the activation of caspase-1, cytokine maturation, and pyroptosis.

A growing body evidence suggests that selenium (Se) deficiency is associated with an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD). Se-dependent glutathione peroxidase-1 (GPx-1) of a major antioxidant enzyme, and the most abundant isoform of GPx in the brain. In the present study, we investigated whether GPx-1 is protective against memory impairments induced by beta-amyloid (Aβ) (1-42) in mice.

Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), a quaternary ammonium compound and cationic surfactant, is used in personal hygiene products such as toothpaste, mouthwash, and nasal spray. Although public exposure to CPC is frequent, its pulmonary toxicity has yet to be fully characterized. Due to high risks of CPC inhalation, we aimed to comprehensively elucidate the in vitro and in vivo toxicity of CPC.

The toxicity profiles of the widely used guanidine-based chemicals have not been fully elucidated. Herein, we evaluated the in vitro and in vivo toxicity of eight guanidine-based chemicals, focusing on inhalation toxicity. Among the eight chemicals, dodecylguanidine hydrochloride (DGH) was found to be the most cytotoxic (IC: 0.

Catechol-conjugated chitosan (CCs), used as tissue adhesive, wound dressing, and hemostatic materials, has been drawing much more attention. However, most CCs tissue adhesives exhibit poor adhesion strength, and few studies on optimization of cohesion and adhesion strength of CCs derivatives have been conducted. This work focused on the balance between cohesion and adhesion strength of catechol-conjugated chitosan (CCs) derivatives via different mechanisms of chemical and enzymatic conjugation.

Adult ascarid worms from the field mice, Apodemus agrarius, were observed with a light and scanning electron microscope, and molecularly analized with 18S rRNA gene. In the scanning electron microscope, 3 prominent labia were present in the anterior end of male and female worms, but the interlabia and gubernaculum were absent. Scanning electron micrographs showed cervical alae as vestigial organs that looked like a slightly uplifted superficial sewing stitch.

We investigated the effects of pyridoxine deficiency on ischemic neuronal death in the hippocampus of gerbil ( = 5 per group). Serum pyridoxal 5'-phosphate levels were significantly decreased in Pyridoxine-deficient diet (PDD)-fed gerbils, while homocysteine levels were significantly increased in sham- and ischemia-operated gerbils. PDD-fed gerbil showed a reduction in neuronal nuclei (NeuN)-immunoreactive neurons in the medial part of the hippocampal CA1 region three days after.

Background: Bacillus anthracis is the causative agent of anthrax, a disease of both humans and various animal species, and can be used as a bioterror agent. Effective vaccines are available, but those could benefit from improvements, including increasing the immunity duration, reducing the shot frequency and adverse reactions. In addition, more sophisticated antigen delivery and potentiation systems are urgently required.

Brown adipose tissue generates heat via the mitochondrial uncoupling protein UCP1 to protect against obesity and hypothermia. Fas mutant MRL/lpr mice exhibit a significantly leaner phenotype compared to wild type MRL/MpJ mice. In this study, we evaluated the inflammatory cell population in the adipose tissue of MRL/lpr mice, which could potentially influence their lean phenotype.

Fat-mass and obesity-associated protein (Fto) is highly expressed in the brain including, the hippocampus, and its expression is significantly decreased in the brain of Alzheimer's disease patients. In the present study, we measured Fto immunoreactivity and protein levels in the hippocampus of obese and aged mice, which were induced by high-fat diet for 12 weeks and D-galactose treatment for 10 weeks, respectively. The obesity and aging phenotypes were assessed by physiological parameters and Morris water maze test, respectively.

Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) derived from outbred mice which share several genetic characteristics similar to humans have been requested for developing stem cell-based bioengineering techniques directly applicable to humans. Here, we report the generation of ESCs derived from the inner cell mass of blastocysts retrieved from 9-week-old female outbred ICR mice mated with 9-week-old male outbred ICR mice (ESCs). Similar to those from 129/Ola mouse blastocysts (ESCs), the established ESCs showed inherent characteristics of ESCs except for partial and weak protein expression and activity of alkaline phosphatase.

Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA), an ER stress inhibitor and vitamin C (Vit. C), an antioxidant, were treated by alone or in combination, then, the level of X-box binding protein 1 () splicing and the expressions of ER stress-associated genes, oxidative stress-related genes, and apoptotic genes were confirmed in the 1-cell and blastocyst stages.

: In March 2020, overall, 37,000 international students from China, a country at risk of the 2019-novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection has arrived in Seoul, South Korea. Individuals from the country at risk of COVID-19 infection have been included in the Korean home-quarantine program, but the efficacy of the program is uncertain. : To estimate the possible number of infected individuals within the large influx of international students from China, we used a deterministic compartmental model for epidemic and performed a simulation-based search of different rates of compliance with home-quarantine.

(APP) causes a form of porcine pleuropneumonia that leads to significant economic losses in the swine industry worldwide. The gene is responsible for the secretion of the ApxI and ApxII toxins and the gene is responsible for the adaptation of bacteria to cold temperature and a virulence factor. The and genes were deleted successfully from APP serotype 1 and 5 by transconjugation and sucrose counter-selection.

The ability of Toxoplasma gondii to cause clinical disease in immune-competent and immune-deficient hosts coupled with its ease of use in vitro and availability of murine models has led to its use as a model organism to study how the immune system controls an intracellular infection. This article reviews the studies that established the role of the cytokine IFN-γ in the activation of macrophages to control T gondii and the events that lead to the mobilization and expansion of macrophage populations and their ability to limit parasite replication. Macrophages also have pro-inflammatory functions that promote protective NK and T-cell activities as well as regulatory properties that facilitate the resolution of inflammation.

The generation of a transplantable liver scaffold is crucial for the treatment of end-stage liver failure. Unfortunately, decellularized liver scaffolds suffer from lack of bioactive molecules and functionality. In this study, we conjugated homogenized liver-extracellular matrix (ECM) into a decellularized liver in a rat model to improve its structural and functional properties.
