The primary objective of this investigation was to assess the influence of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) and the duration of cold storage on the physicochemical, technological, and sensory attributes as well as the nutritional composition and shelf life of meat. The experimental framework involved utilizing samples derived from the semimembranosus muscle of pork. Each muscle obtained from the same carcass was segmented into six distinct parts, with three designated as control specimens (K) and the remaining subjected to vacuum packaging and subsequent exposure to high hydrostatic pressure (200 MPa at 20 °C for 30 min).

Introduction: Musculoskeletal disorders are the leading cause of illness, disability, and poor quality of life. Lack of access to potable water in the backyard forces women to take water from off-plot sources every day, which may expose them to various health risks. The influence of parental occupational status on under-five mortality in Ethiopia.

Biodemography Soc Biol

August 2024

Department of Social Work, School of Sociology and Political Science, Shanghai University, Shanghai, China.

Few studies have examined the mediators of the association between parental occupational status and under-five mortality risk in Ethiopia. We examine the association between parental occupational status and under-five mortality risk in Ethiopia and the role of two mediating variables, antenatal care visits and delivery by a health professional, in this relationship. Using birth data from the nationally representative 2016 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey, the study finds that parental occupation, antenatal care visits, and delivery by a health professional are associated with under-five mortality risk.

Objective: This study aimed to examine patterns of mother-father coparenting relationship quality and their associations with child empathy, emotional insecurity, and behavior problems in families with low income.

Background: Given the growing number of nonmarital births and the high risk of relationship dissolution among cohabiting couples living with low income, it is important to examine the coparenting relationships among racially diverse unmarried couples from low-income contexts. To date, little research has assessed patterns of coparenting relationships and their associations with child socioemotional outcomes among this population.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the metabolite profiles and antioxidant capacities of newly bred waxy and non-waxy Korean red rice varieties, identifying 15 phenolic compounds across the samples.
  • Accession1 was noted for its high fatty acids, phytosterols, and vitamin E, while accession4 had the highest total flavonoids.
  • Correlation analysis indicated a strong link between these metabolites and antioxidant activity, with in silico results showing promising molecular interactions for various phytochemicals, suggesting paths for enhancing the functional qualities of other rice types.

Multitarget Compounds for Neglected Diseases: A Review.

Curr Drug Targets

September 2024

Postgraduate Program of Natural and Synthetic Bioactive Products (PgPNSB), Health Sciences Center, Federal University of Paraíba, João Pessoa-PB, Brazil.

Neglected diseases are a group of infectious diseases, many of them parasitic, that mainly affect the poorest populations with limited access to health services, especially those living in remote rural areas and slums. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), neglected diseases put the lives of more than 200 million people at risk, and treatment is made difficult by the occurrence of resistance to existing medications, as well as the high level of toxicity. In this way, the potential of multitarget compounds is highlighted, defined as compounds designed to modulate multiple targets of relevance to disease, with the overall goal of enhancing efficacy and/or improving safety.

Addressing the sexuality of individuals with disabilities is important within the framework of global health and societal inclusivity. Despite comprising 16% of the world's population, this demographic faces sexual autonomy inequality. Acknowledging this intersection is pertinent for achieving inclusive healthcare and upholding the commitments of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development and the 2006 United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

  • Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is a serious neglected tropical disease mainly affecting East Africa, with the potential for relapses and Post Kala-azar Dermal Leishmaniasis (PKDL) complicating control efforts.
  • A study of 36 follow-up VL patients in Kenya revealed a high final cure rate of 88.89%, but also identified significant risk factors for relapse and PKDL, such as young age and low hemoglobin levels.
  • The findings highlight the need for ongoing research and monitoring in Kenya to better understand and manage the disease's long-term impacts.

Cannabis use trajectories over time in relation to minority stress and gender among sexual and gender minority people.

Addict Behav

October 2024

The PRIDE Study/PRIDEnet, Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, CA, United States; Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, CA, United States; Department of Epidemiology and Population Health, Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, CA, United States.

Substance use disparities among sexual and gender minority (SGM) people are attributed to minority stress, but few studies have examined minority stress and cannabis use over time or investigated differences in cannabis use trajectories by less-studied gender subgroups. We examined if longitudinal cannabis use trajectories are related to baseline minority stressors and if gender differences persisted after accounting for minority stress. Cannabis use risk was measured annually over four years (2017-2021) within a longitudinal cohort study of SGM adults in the United States (N = 11,813).

Objective: To investigate the associations between county-level political group density, partisan polarization, and individual-level mortality from all causes and from coronary heart disease (CHD) in the United States.

Methods: Using data from five survey waves (1998-2006) of the General Social Survey-National Death Index dataset and the County Presidential Election Return 2000 dataset, we fit weighted Cox proportional hazards models to estimate the associations between (1) political group density and (2) partisan polarization measured at the county level in 2000 (n = 313 counties) categorized into quartiles with individual-level mortality (n = 14,983 participants) from all causes and CHD, controlling for individual- and county-level factors. Maximum follow-up was from one year after the survey up until 2014.

Brown-top millet is a lesser-known millet with a high grain nutrient value, early maturation, and drought tolerance that needs basic research to understand and conserve food security. Brown-top millet [Urochloa ramosa (L.)] is currently cultivated in some developing countries (especially in India) for food and fodder, although it is less known among the small millets.
