Applying the optimal 2-electron oxygen reduction reaction potential in electro-Fenton (2eORR-EF) for degradation has become a common strategy because of the highest HO generation rate in such condition. However, in 2eORR-EF system, the Fe(III) ions crystallize on the surface of cathode and form a layer of film according to SEM, XPS, XRD and Mössbauer spectrum resulting in poor reaction rate of EF. Hence, we propose FRR-EF, which is operated by applying the optimal potential of ferric iron reduction reaction (FRR) rather than that of 2eORR on cathode for EF.

Comparison of bacterial communities and antibiotic resistance genes in oxidation ditches and membrane bioreactors.

Sci Rep

April 2021

College of Resource and Environmental Science, Xinjiang University, No. 666 Shengli Road, Tianshan District, Urumqi, China.

Oxidation ditches (ODs) and membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are widely used in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) running through the whole system. In this study, metagenomic sequencing was used to compare the bacterial communities and ARGs in the OD and MBR systems, which received the same influent in a WWTP located in Xinjiang, China. The results showed that the removal efficiency of pollutants by the MBR process was better than that by the OD process.

June 2021

Environmental Biotechnology National Research Laboratory, School of Chemical Engineering, Jeonbuk National University (formerly Chonbuk National University), 567 Beakje-dearo, Deokjin-gu, Jeonju, Jeonbuk 54896, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

It is of great importance to predict the adsorption of micropollutants onto CNTs, which is not only useful for exploring their potential adsorbent applications, but also helpful for better understanding their fate and risks in aquatic environments. This study experimentally examined the adsorption affinities of thirty-one micropollutants on four multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) with different functional groups (non-functionalized, -COOH, -OH, and -NH). The properties of each adsorbent were predicted based on the linear free energy relationship (LFER) model.

Microbial metabolic response to winter warming stabilizes soil carbon.

Glob Chang Biol

May 2021

Geography, College of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Exeter, Exeter, UK.

Current consensus on global climate change predicts warming trends with more pronounced temperature changes in winter than summer in the Northern Hemisphere at high latitudes. Moderate increases in soil temperature are generally related to faster rates of soil organic carbon (SOC) decomposition in Northern ecosystems, but there is evidence that SOC stocks have remained remarkably stable or even increased on the Tibetan Plateau under these conditions. This intriguing observation points to altered soil microbial mediation of carbon-cycling feedbacks in this region that might be related to seasonal warming.

February 2021

College of Environmental Science and Engineering, Zhejiang Gongshang University, No.18 Xuezheng Street, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China.

The effect of electricity, induced by external resistance, on microbial community performance is investigated in Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) involved in simultaneous biotransformation of sulfide and nitrate. In the experiment, three MFCs were operated under different external resistances (100 Ω, 1000 Ω and 10,000 Ω), while one MFC was operated with open circuit as control. All MFCs demonstrate good capacity for simultaneous sulfide and nitrate biotransformation regardless of external resistance.

We examined the correlation between changes of root morphology and endogenous hormones in intercropping systems of wheat and faba bean under different phosphorus levels by hydroponics. Compared with monocropping wheat (MW), the intercropping of wheat and faba bean (W∥F) significantly increased root length of wheat, reduced root average diameter of wheat, and increased root surface area under the condition of 1/2P (low P) level. At the conventional phosphorus level, intercropping significantly reduced root average diameter of wheat, and increased root length and root surface area.
