Design of Project STAR: A randomized controlled trial evaluating the impact of an adaptive intervention on long-term weight-loss maintenance.

Contemp Clin Trials

November 2024

Department of Clinical and Health Psychology, College of Public Health and Health Professions, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Many people regain weight after weight-loss programs, but extended-care programs could help maintain that weight loss over time, even if the effect isn’t huge.
  • This study aimed to compare two types of extended-care phone sessions: ADAPTIVE (when at high risk of regaining weight) versus STATIC (a regular monthly check-in) for better long-term results.
  • The findings from Project STAR will reveal if the ADAPTIVE schedule is more effective for maintaining weight loss and will also contribute to future strategies for preventing weight regain.

October 2024

Department of Biostatistics, College of Medicine and College of Public Health and Health Professions, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study addresses health-related stigma faced by individuals with chronic health conditions, highlighting its negative effects on mental and physical well-being.
  • Researchers created the Internalized Health-Related Stigma (I-HEARTS) Scale to measure this stigma across diverse health conditions, using feedback from affected individuals and health professionals.
  • The I-HEARTS Scale was validated through factor analysis, resulting in a reliable 25-item scale that identifies three key aspects of internalized stigma and helps indicate levels of stigma within the population studied.

Reasons for not seeking alcohol treatment among a sample of Florida adults with HIV who perceived the need for treatment.

Addict Sci Clin Pract

October 2024

Department of Epidemiology, College of Public Health and Health Professions, College of Medicine, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA.

Background: A minority of people who need alcohol treatment receive it. Unhealthy alcohol use is common among people with HIV (PWH) and can lead to negative health outcomes. The aims of this multi-methods study are to (1) quantitatively describe the prevalence, psychosocial characteristics, and demographic traits of a sample of PWH currently receiving HIV care in Florida who had a self-reported need for alcohol treatment but did not seek care and (2) qualitatively explore reasons why PWH did not seek treatment.

Cancer cachexia affects up to 80% of cancer patients and results in reduced quality of life and survival. We previously demonstrated that the transcriptional repressor Forkhead box P1 (FoxP1) is upregulated in skeletal muscle of cachectic mice and people with cancer, and when overexpressed in skeletal muscle is sufficient to induce pathological features characteristic of cachexia. However, the role of myofiber-derived FoxP1 in both normal muscle physiology and cancer-induced muscle wasting remains largely unexplored.

A physiologically based toxicokinetic model for microplastics and nanoplastics in mice after oral exposure and its implications for human dietary exposure assessment.

J Hazard Mater

December 2024

Department of Environmental and Global Health, College of Public Health and Health Professions, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL 32610, United States; Center for Environmental and Human Toxicology, University of Florida, FL 32611, United States. Electronic address:

Evidence of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) in foods and daily-use products, along with their frequent detection in the human body, has raised concerns regarding their potential impact on human health through dietary ingestion. However, there is a lack of quantitative tools to simulate their bioaccumulation and tissue distribution following environmental exposure. To address this gap, we developed the first physiologically based toxicokinetic (PBTK) model for predicting the biodistribution of MPs and NPs in mice following oral exposure under various exposure scenarios.

Improving Nutrition Security in Low- and Middle-Income Countries and the Role of Animal-Source Foods.

Annu Rev Anim Biosci

September 2024

1Department of Environmental and Global Health, College of Public Health and Health Professions, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, USA; email:

Nutrition security is challenging in regions where resources are limited and food production is naturally constrained. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), undernutrition is high for many reasons, including lack of nutritional diversity and low high-quality protein content. Interest in the role of animal-source food (ASF) in reducing nutrition insecurity is increasing, as evidence from LMICs suggests that consumption of ASF is strongly associated with reduction in stunting, improved diet quality, and overall nutrition, particularly in early stages of life.

A critical review of the current state-of-the-science for the physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling of metal nanoparticles and their application to human health risk assessment for inhalation exposures was conducted. A systematic literature search was used to identify four model groups (defined as a primary publication along with multiple supplementary publications) subject to review. Using a recent guideline document from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) for PBPK model evaluation, these model groups were critically peer-reviewed by an independent panel of experts to identify those to be considered for modeling and simulation application.

Allostatic load and cognitive recall among young adults: Racial, ethnic, and sex-specific variations.

J Int Neuropsychol Soc

October 2024

Communication Equity and Outcomes Laboratory, Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, College of Public Health and Health Professions, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA.

Introduction: While factors such as age and education have been associated with persistent differences in functional cognitive decline, they do not fully explain observed variations particularly those between different racial/ethnic and sex groups. The aim of this study was to explore the association between allostatic load (AL) and cognition in a racially diverse cohort of young adults.

Methods: Utilizing Wave V of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health - a nationally representative, longitudinal survey of adults aged 34-44, this study utilized primary data from 10 immune, cardiovascular, and metabolic biomarkers to derive an AL Index.

Cross sectional analysis of an addiction consultation service, substance co-use patterns, and receipt of medications for opioid use disorder during hospitalization.

J Subst Use Addict Treat

December 2024

Health, Homelessness, and Criminal Justice Lab, Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute, 701 Park Ave., Suite PP7.700, Minneapolis, MN 55415, USA; Division of General Internal Medicine, Department of Medicine, Hennepin Healthcare, 716 S 7(th) St, Minneapolis, MN 55415, USA.

Introduction: Despite effective medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), treatment engagement remains low. As the overdose crisis is increasingly characterized by opioids co-used with other substances, it is important to understand whether existing models effectively support treatment for patients who use multiple substances. Hospital-based addiction consultation services (ACS) have shown promise at increasing MOUD initiation and treatment engagement, but the effectiveness for patients with specific co-use patterns remains unknown.

J Affect Disord

December 2024

Department of Health Services Research, Management and Policy, University of Florida College of Public Health and Health Professions, 1225 Center Drive, Gainesville, FL 32610, United States of America.

Background: We examined the association between symptoms of anxiety and depression among individuals with long COVID and five social vulnerabilities (expenses, employment, food insufficiency, housing, and insurance).

Methods: Data from the Census Bureau's Household Pulse Survey (HPS) detailing COVID incidence, duration, and symptoms between June 1st and November 14th, 2022 contained versions of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-2) and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2) questionnaires. Associations between anxiety, depression, and the five social vulnerabilities among respondents from different racial and ethnic groups experiencing long COVID were evaluated using generalized binomial logistic regression.
