Background: Although many studies on the association between dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease (CVD) exist in older adults, data on the association among adolescents and young adults living with disproportionate burden of cardiometabolic disorders are scarce.
Methods And Results: The SHFS (Strong Heart Family Study) is a multicenter, family-based, prospective cohort study of CVD in an American Indian populations, including 12 communities in central Arizona, southwestern Oklahoma, and the Dakotas. We evaluated SHFS participants, who were 15 to 39 years old at the baseline examination in 2001 to 2003 (n=1440).

Cancer-associated thrombosis, with the incidence rising over the years, is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in patients with cancer. Recent advances in the treatment of cancer-associated venous thromboembolism (VTE) include the introduction of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), which provide a more convenient and effective option than low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH). Nonetheless, important unmet needs remain including an increased risk of bleeding in certain patient subgroups such as those with gastroesophageal cancer, concerns about drug-drug interactions, and management of patients with severe renal impairment.

Background Venous thromboembolism (VTE) often occurs after hospitalization in medically ill patients, but the population benefit-risk of extended thromboprophylaxis remains uncertain. Methods and Results The MARINER (Medically Ill Patient Assessment of Rivaroxaban Versus Placebo in Reducing Post-Discharge Venous Thrombo-Embolism Risk) study (NCT02111564) was a randomized double-blind trial that compared thromboprophylaxis with rivaroxaban 10 mg daily versus placebo for 45 days after hospital discharge in medically ill patients with a creatinine clearance ≥50 mL/min. The benefit-risk balance in this population was quantified by calculating the between-treatment rate differences in efficacy and safety end points per 10 000 patients treated.

Background: Randomized comparisons have demonstrated survival benefit of adjuvant immunotherapy in node-positive melanoma patients but have limited power to determine if this benefit persists across various demographic factors.
Materials & Methods: We assessed the impact of demographic factors on the survival benefit of adjuvant immunotherapy in a database of 38,189 node-positive melanoma patients using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazards models.
Results: All assessed demographic factors other than race significantly impacted survival of node-positive melanoma patients in univariate analysis.

Sulforaphane exerts anti-cancer activity against multiple cancer types. Our objective was to evaluate utility of sulforaphane for endometrial cancer therapy. Sulforaphane reduced viability of endometrial cancer cell lines in association with the G/M cell cycle arrest and cell division cycle protein 2 (Cdc2) phosphorylation, and intrinsic apoptosis.

Cervical cancer is caused by high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) types and treated with conventional chemotherapy with surgery and/or radiation. HPV E6 and E7 proteins increase phosphorylation of retinoblastoma (Rb) by cyclin D1/cyclin dependent kinase (CDK)4/6 complexes. We hypothesized that cyclin D1 degradation by the SHetA2 drug in combination with palbociclib inhibition of CDK4/6 activity synergistically reduces phosphorylated Rb (phospho-Rb) and inhibits cervical cancer growth.

Background And Aims: Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare disorder characterized by acute episodes of systemic microvascular thrombosis; TTP is more common in adults, women, and African-Americans (Blacks). Our Oklahoma TTP Registry documented that survivors have an increased prevalence of depression compared with the general population; however, many patients' depression remains untreated. Moreover, studies identifying attitudes toward depression management are lacking.

Awareness of the risk factors and symptoms is important so that AF can be diagnosed and thromboprophylaxis given. However, the extent of public awareness of AF is uncertain.

The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis established the inaugural World Thrombosis Day on October 13, 2014. The World Thrombosis Day campaign aims to 1) highlight the disease burden from thrombosis, 2) increase public awareness of the risks, signs, and symptoms of thromboembolic conditions, 3) empower individuals to discuss their thrombosis risk with their healthcare provider, 4) galvanize organizations across the globe, and 5) advocate for "systems of care" to prevent, diagnose, and treat venous thromboembolism and atrial fibrillation.

Objective: This study aims to assess the role of polymorphisms in DNA repair genes, excision repair cross-complementation group 1 (ERCC1) and methyl-methanesulfonate sensitivity 19 (MMS19), in tumor response to platinum-based chemotherapy and survival in advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC).
Methods: Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis was performed on the paraffin-embedded tumor tissue of women with advanced EOC, treated with platinum-based chemotherapy at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Polymorphisms from two ERCC1 (codon-118 and C8092A) and three MMS19 (rs2211243, rs2236575 and rs872106) gene loci were evaluated by real time PCR Allelic Discrimination Assay.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine hematologist and patient perspectives about the side-effects of the corticosteroid treatment of immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) and their perspectives about the patient's risk for bleeding. The specific aim was to compare patient and hematologist perspectives and, if a difference was documented, the implications of that difference. We hypothesized that patients with ITP may have more concern about corticosteroid side-effects and less concern about serious bleeding than hematologists.
