July 2024

State Key Laboratory of Polymer Materials Engineering, Sichuan Provincial Engineering Laboratory of Plastic/Rubber Complex Processing Technology, Polymer Research Institute of Sichuan University, Chengdu 610065, China.

The preparation of novel structures of light-diffusing particles is currently a research focus in the field of light-diffusing materials. This study, conducted by the common melt-blending process, controlled thermodynamic and kinetic factors to distribute smaller-sized organic silica bead (OSB) particles at the interface between a polycarbonate (PC) matrix and spherical island-phase styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN) for the in situ formation of compound eye-like microspheres with SAN as "large eyes" and OSBs as "small eyes". Through the multiple-scattering effects of these compound eye-like microspheres, these light-diffusing materials significantly improved the haze, scattering range, and light-shielding capabilities while maintaining high transmittance.

College of Material Science and Engineering, Qingdao University of Science and Technology, Qingdao, 266042, PR China; College of Polymer Science and Engineering, Qingdao University of Science and Technology, Qingdao, 266042, PR China. Electronic address:

Indocyanine green (ICG), the only near-infrared (NIR) dye approved for clinical use, has received increasing attention as a theranostic agent wherein diagnosis (fluorescence) is combined with therapy (phototherapy), but suffers rapid hepatic clearance, poor photostability, and limited accumulation at tumor sites. Here we report that dimerized ICG can self-assemble to form zwitterionic nanoparticles (ZN-dICG), which generate fluorescence self-quenching but exhibit superior photothermal and photodynamic properties over ICG. The zwitterionic moieties confer ZN-dICG an ultralow critical micelle concentration and high colloidal stability with low non-specific binding in vivo.

Chongqing Research Center for Pharmaceutical Engineering, College of Pharmacy, Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing, China.

Gouty arthritis is a chronic and progressive disease characterized by high urate levels in the joints and by an inflammatory immune microenvironment. Clinical data indicate that urate reduction therapy or anti-inflammatory therapy alone often fails to deliver satisfactory outcomes. Here we have developed a smart biomimetic nanosystem featuring a 'shell' composed of a fusion membrane derived from M2 macrophages and exosomes, which encapsulates liposomes loaded with a combination of uricase, platinum-in-hyaluronan/polydopamine nanozyme and resveratrol.

Reducing the degree of crosslinking of peptidoglycan in Listeria monocytogenes promoted the secretion of membrane vesicles.

Biotechnol Bioeng

November 2024

Department of Public Health Laboratory Sciences, West China School of Public Health and West China Fourth Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Listeria monocytogenes (LM) is a Gram-positive bacterium that produces nanoscale membrane vesicles (MVs) which could be useful for drug delivery, but low yield hinders research.
  • Researchers aimed to increase MV release by reducing peptidoglycan crosslinking, using genetic modifications (knocking out dal and dat genes), resulting in a recombinant strain (LMΔdd::pCW633) with significantly higher MV yields.
  • They found that Listeria ivanovii (LI) also produces MVs, with different protein compositions, and the method to enhance MV secretion was effective for both wild-type and attenuated strains of LM and LI, suggesting broader applicability for other Gram-positive bacteria.

Photothermal therapy (PTT) encounters challenges in addressing deep tissue infections, characterized by limited penetration or potential hyperthermal damage to surrounding tissues, initiating undesirable inflammatory cascades. Inspired by polar bear thermal regulation, we present a "bio-based endogenic thermal-adaptive booster" implant coating. This coating integrates a photothermal poly(tannic acid) (pTA) layer, mimicking the "polar bear dark skin", securely linked with anti-inflammatory dexamethasone (Dex), resembling the "secretion", and a red blood cell membrane (RBCM) layer, forming the insulating "transparent fur".

Steviol glycosides (SGs) are a natural sweetener widely used in the food and beverage industry, but the low solubility and stability of SG aqueous solutions greatly limit their application performance, especially in liquid formulations. In this work, we explore the solubility behavior of rebaudioside A (Reb A) in water, a major component of SGs, with the aim of clarifying the underlying mechanisms of the solubility and stability constraints of SGs, as well as the impact on their multifunctional properties. We demonstrate for the first time that Reb A exhibits hierarchical self-assembly in solutions, forming spherical micelles first when the concentration exceeds its critical micelle concentration (5.

Cytosolic delivery of proteins and peptides provides opportunities for effective disease treatment, as they can specifically modulate intracellular processes. However, most of protein-based therapeutics only have extracellular targets and are cell-membrane impermeable due to relatively large size and hydrophilicity. The use of organelle-targeting strategy offers great potential to overcome extracellular and cell membrane barriers, and enables localization of protein and peptide therapeutics in the organelles.

Asynchronous Ring Opening of Cyclic Carbonate and Glycidyl Ether Induced Phase Evolution Towards Heat-Free and Rapid-Bonding Superior Epoxy Adhesive.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

September 2024

College of Chemistry and Pingyuan Laboratory, Zhengzhou Key Laboratory of Elastic Sealing Materials, Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou, 450001, China.

Structural adhesives that do not require heating are in high demand in the automotive and electronics industries. However, it remains a challenge to develop robust adhesives that rapidly achieve super adhesion near ambient temperature. Herein, a room-temperature curable, fast-bonding, and super strong epoxy-based structural adhesive was designed from the perspective of cross-scale structure, which lies in threefold pivotal aspects: (i) high branching topology of glycerol carbonate-capped polyurethane (PUGC) increases the kinetics of the ring-opening reaction, contributing to fast crosslinking and the formation of abundant urethane and hydroxyl moieties; (ii) asynchronous crosslinking of epoxy and PUGC synergistically induces phase separation of PUGC within the epoxy resin and the resulting PUGC domains surrounded by interpenetrated shell serves to efficiently toughen the matrix; (iii) abundant dynamic hydrogen bonds including urethane and hydroxyl moieties, along with the elastomeric PUGC domains, dissipate energy of shearing force.
