A number of members of the G protein-coupled receptor class of cell surface receptors are 'orphans' with no known endogenous ligand. One of these orphan receptors is GPR61; there are little data about its expression in human cells and tissues. In this study, we investigated the post-translational modification of GPR61 by glycosylation at an identified consensus -glycosylation site (N12) and the impact of this modification upon the subcellular expression of the protein.

Thymoquinone-induced relaxation of guinea-pig isolated trachea.

Res Commun Mol Pathol Pharmacol

August 2003

Department of Pharmacology, College of Pharmacy King Saud University, P.O.Box 2457, Riyadh, 11451, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The effect of thymoquinone (TQ), the main constituent of the volatile oil of black seed (Nigella sativa), on the guinea-pig isolated tracheal zig-zag preparation was investigated. TQ caused a concentration-dependent decrease in the tension of the tracheal smooth muscle precontracted by carbachol. The effects of TQ were significantly potentiated by pretreatment of the tracheal preparations with quinacrine, a phospholipase A2 inhibitor, nordihydroguiaretic acid, a lipoxygenase inhibitor and by pretreatment with methylene blue, an inhibitor of soluble guanylyl cyclase.

Cyclopeptide alkaloids: further studies on mauritine-C and sativanine-C.

Pak J Pharm Sci

July 1989

Medicinal, Aromatic and Poisonous Plants Research Centre, College of Pharmacy King Saud University, P.O. Box-2457, Riyadh-11451, Saudi Arabia.

The 14-membered cyclopeptide alkaloid mauritine-C and the 13-membered cyclopeptide alkaloid sativanine-C were isolated from Zizyphus spinea-christi and Zizyphus sativa commonly used in the Saudi Folklor medicine. The N-formyl derivatives of these compounds were prepared and their corresponding spectral data was analyzed. Fundamental differences were observed in the mass spectrometric fragmentation of the newly formed derivatives as compared to the parent compounds mass spectrometry was found a useful tool to substantiate the fragmentation pattern proposed for these potential natural products.
