The cuticular wax serves as the outermost hydrophobic barrier of plants against nonstomatal water loss and various environmental stresses. An objective of this study was to investigate the contribution of the mutualistic fungal endophyte to leaf cuticular wax of under different soil moisture availability. Through a pot experiment and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis, our results indicated that the hydrocarbons were the dominant components of leaf cuticular wax, and the proportion of alcohols, aldehydes, amines, and ethers varied with the presence or absence of and different soil moisture availability.

Plateau pikas () are high-altitude model animals and famous "ecosystem engineers" on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Pika activities may accelerate the degradation of alpine meadows. Nevertheless, little is known about the responses of bacterial, fungal, and archaeal communities, and ecosystem multifunctionality to pika perturbations.

Biodiversity is crucial for the provision of ecosystem functions. However, ecosystems are now exposed to a rapidly growing number of anthropogenic pressures, and it remains unknown whether biodiversity can still promote ecosystem functions under multifaceted pressures. Here we investigated the effects of soil microbial diversity on soil functions and properties when faced with an increasing number of simultaneous global change factors in experimental microcosms.

Hematological traits are important indexes to evaluate health status and immunological conditions in human and livestock. In this study, we measured the hematologic indexes of 819 male Hu lambs and performed the descriptive statistical analysis. The results showed the coefficients of variation of partial indexes were >10%, and the heritability for mean erythrocyte volume (MCV), white blood cell count (WBC), hemoglobin concentration (HGB), hematocrit (HCT), and red blood cell (RBC) distribution-standard deviation (RDW_SD) were medium to high, ranging from 0.

The orchard inter-planting pattern is being widely used in many countries of the world, but it is relatively new in China. This study evaluated the interrow mono- and mixed-planting of (Lp) and (Ms) in orchards on soil nutrient, enzyme activity, and bacterial community diversity in 0-10, 10-20, and 20-40 cm soil layers. The clean tillage orchard was used as control (CK) treatment.

Human activities cause widespread changes in landscape composition, which can affect ecosystem services produced by these landscapes. It is usually believed that ecosystem services can be maximized only when we eliminate all human activities. However, this belief is not the case, at least in dryland ecosystems.

Extreme precipitation and drought events are predicted to become more intense and more frequent over the Amazon rainforest. Because changes in forest dynamics could prompt strong feedback loops to the global climate, it is of crucial importance to gain insight into the response of tropical forests to these recurring extreme climatic events. Here, we evaluated the Amazon forest stability (resistance and resilience) to drought in the context of past dry and wet climatic events using MODIS EVI satellite imagery and cumulative water deficit anomalies.

The GRAS gene family is a plant-specific family of transcription factors, which play an important role in many metabolic pathways, such as plant growth and development and stress response. However, there is no report on the comprehensive study of the GRAS gene family of . Here, we identified 55 genes, which were classified into 8 subfamilies by phylogenetic analysis, and unevenly distributed on 8 chromosomes.

Drought stress is one of the major constraints that decreases global crop productivity. Alfalfa, planted mainly in arid and semi-arid areas, is of crucial importance in sustaining the agricultural system. The family 1 UDP-glycosyltransferases (UGT) is indispensable because it takes part in the regulation of plant growth and stress resistance.

The genetic adaptations to harsh climatic conditions in high altitudes and genetic basis of important agronomic traits are poorly understood in L. In this study, an association population of 210 genotypes was used for population structure, selective sweep analysis, and genome-wide association study (GWAS) based on 88,506 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). We found 965 alleles under the natural selection of high altitude, which included 7 hub genes involved in the response to UV, and flavonoid and anthocyanin biosynthetic process based on the protein-protein interaction (PPI) analysis.

Background: This study investigated greenhouse gas (GHG) emission characteristics of lactating Holstein dairy cows in East China and provided a basis for formulating GHG emission reduction measures. GreenFeed system was used to measure the amount of methane (CH) and carbon dioxide (CO) emitted by the cows through respiration. Data from a commercial cow farm were used to observe the effects of parity, body weight, milk yield, and milk component yield on CH and CO emissions.

Following infestation by Verticillium wilt, alfalfa ( L.) often shows symptoms such as disease spots, leaf loss, stem, and leaf yellowing, resulting in the decline of alfalfa yield and quality and causing significant losses to the alfalfa industry. The popularization and planting of disease-resistant varieties is the most effective method to prevent and control Verticillium wilt of alfalfa.

To meet the demand of the fast increasing population, enhancing the wheat ( L.) yield and resource use efficiency by optimizing water and nitrogen (N) management can greatly improve agricultural sustainability and enhance regenerative farming in developing countries such as China. Based on 126 studies conducted in China between 1996 and 2018, using meta-analysis in combination with decision regression tree modeling and life cycle assessment (LCA), this study aimed to (1) quantify the effect of water and N input on wheat yield, water productivity (WP ), and N use efficiency (NUE ), and evaluate the subsequent environmental impact in different regions using LCA; and (2) evaluate, model, and rank the roles of environmental (e.

ZNF280BY, a bovid-specific Y chromosome gene, was firstly found to be highly expressed in bovine testis, indicating that it may play important roles in testicular development and male fertility. In this study, we firstly cloned the full-length cDNA of ovine ZNF280BY containing 1,993 bp, and with a 1,632 bp open reading frame. ZNF280BY was predominantly expressed in the testis, and its expression level was significantly higher in large testis than in small testis in Hu sheep at 6 months of age.

Although the enrichment of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in diverse organic soils have been explored, understanding of the ecological processes governing the composition of ARGs in long-term organically fertilized soils still remains limited across typical agricultural regions. Thus, the distribution and assembly of ARG profile in three typical agricultural soils (black soil, fluvo-aquic soil, and red soil) under long-term contrasting fertilization regimes (chemical-only vs organic-only) were investigated using high-throughput qPCR (HT-qPCR). The application of organic manure significantly increased the abundance and number of ARGs across soils, as compared to those with chemical fertilizer.
