Background: Plasma epidermal growth factor receptor () mutation tests are less invasive than tissue mutation tests. We determined which of two kits is more efficient: cobas Mutation test v2 (cobasv2; Roche Molecular Systems, Pleasanton, CA, USA) or PANAMutyper-R- (Mutyper; Panagene, Daejeon, Korea). We also evaluated whether pleural effusion supernatant (PE-SUP) samples are assayable, similar to plasma samples, using these two kits.

Background: Constitutive photomorphogenic 1 (COP1) is an E3 ubiquitin ligase that regulates important target proteins for cell growth including p27. The tumor suppressor p27 negatively regulates the cell cycle by inhibiting cyclin-dependent kinase. COP1 negatively regulates p27 stability by mediating its nuclear export and degradation.

We previously reported that hydrangenol has potent antitumor activity against human bladder cancer EJ cells. Here, we investigated the antiangiogenic activity of hydrangenol using and models. Treatment with hydrangenol significantly inhibited the proliferation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-induced HUVECs in a concentration-dependent manner (EC= 10 μM).

Background: The mechanisms underlying autism spectrum disorder (ASD) remain unclear, and clinical biomarkers are not yet available for ASD. Differences in dysregulated proteins in ASD have shown little reproducibility, which is partly due to ASD heterogeneity. Recent studies have demonstrated that subgrouping ASD cases based on clinical phenotypes is useful for identifying candidate genes that are dysregulated in ASD subgroups.

Objective: The aim of this article is to describe the process used to develop an acupuncture therapy manual for a large effectiveness trial comparing individual care against group care for chronic pain in an underserved population. The design needed to not only ensure research consistency and replicability but also be 'responsive' to real world heterogeneous and evolving presentations in challenging physical settings.

Background: Chronic pain is prevalent in the United States.

Background: Rikkunshito has been used to treat gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Rikkunshito, a traditional Japanese herbal medicine, on the pacemaker potentials of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) from the small intestines of mice.

Methods: We isolated ICCs from the small intestines of mice, and the whole-cell patch-clamp configuration was used to record the pacemaker potentials in cultured ICCs and membrane currents.

Camptothecin (CPT) is a popular therapeutic agent that targets topoisomerase I. Our findings demonstrated that CPT-induced microtubule polymerization results in markedly increased histone H3 phosphorylation. CPT also enhanced interactions between the mitotic checkpoint proteins, Mad2 and Cdc20, and thereby increased mitotic arrest.

Recently, doubts were raised about the existence of the bilingual advantage in cognitive control. The aim of the present review was to investigate the bilingual advantage and its modulating factors. We searched the Medline, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and ERIC databases for all original data and reviewed studies on bilingualism and cognitive control, with a cut-off date of 31 October 2018, thereby following the guidelines of the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) protocol.

Camptothecin (CPT), a quinoline alkaloid isolated from Camptotheca acuminate, targets topoisomerase I, which is continuously expressed in cancer cells. However, the molecular mechanisms responsible for CPT-induced telomerase inhibition remain unclear. Unexpectedly, we found that CPT upregulates hTERT expression and concomitantly increases telomerase activity.

Improves Glomerular Fibrosis and Renal Dysfunction in Diabetic Nephropathy Model.

Nutrients

March 2019

Hanbang Cardio-Renal Syndrome Research Center, Wonkwang University, 460, Iksan-daero, Iksan, Jeonbuk 54538, Korea.

Glomerular fibrosis is caused by an accumulation of intercellular spaces containing mesangial matrix proteins through either diffused or nodular changes. has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic, a contraceptive, and an anti-inflammatory agent. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of -EtOAc soluble fraction (DS-EA) on glomerular fibrosis and renal dysfunction, which has been implicated in diabetic nephropathy in human renal mesangial cells and db/db mice.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the hepatoprotective effects of blue honeysuckle (BH) on carbon tetrachloride (CCl)-induced acute hepatic damage in mice. The experiment used a total of 60 ICR mice, which were divided into six groups. Except for the intact control groups, all groups received a single intraperitoneal injection of CCl after a 7 day pre-treatment period with distilled water, BH extracts, or silymarin.

Article Synopsis
  • In December 2016, the WHO reported 383,000 asthma-related deaths and 235 million people suffering from asthma, highlighting the need for new, safer asthma medications.
  • The study assessed the anti-asthmatic effects and mechanisms of C. japonica oil, using an ovalbumin asthma murine model and various treatment groups to compare its efficacy against existing treatments.
  • Results showed that C. japonica oil effectively reduced key inflammatory markers and cells associated with asthma, suggesting that it is a promising new drug candidate, with oleic acid identified as its main active component.

BMC Complement Altern Med

January 2019

Department of Oriental Neuropsychiatry, College of Korean Medicine, College of Oriental Medicine, Daejeon University, Yongun-dong, Dong-gu, Daejeon, South Korea.

Background: Almost half of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients progress to dementia, which is associated with decreased quality of life and obstacles to independent living. Relevant management is expected to prevent MCI patients from progressing to dementia. In recent years, electroacupuncture (EA) has been used to treat various kinds of neurological disorders including MCI.

Olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) is one of economically valuable fish species in the East Asia. In comparison with its economic importance, available genomic information of the olive flounder is very limited. The mass mortality caused by variety of pathogens (virus, bacteria and parasites) is main problem in aquaculture industry, including in olive flounder culture.

In the thermal analysis, the pyrolysis characteristics of crude Kansui Radix, alcohol extract of Kansui Radix, petroleum ether extract, chloroform extract, ethyl acetate extract, n-butanol extract, and licorice vinegar were analyzed with simulated air (N₂-O₂ 4:1) as the carrier gas, at a temperature increase rate of 10 °C·min⁻¹ and a volume flow rate of 60 mL·min⁻¹, respectively. The results showed that due to the different polarity of the extraction solvent, the type and quantity of the chemical components contained in each polar part were different, and with the increase in the amount of solid powder of licorice, the peak of the maximum heat loss rate occurred in advance. For petroleum ether, chloroform, and ethyl acetate fractions, (157.

Objectives: The combination of biomedicine and traditional and complementary medicine (T&CM) is often referred to as integrative medicine. However, the degree to which the medical disciplines are integrated varies between medical settings, and it is believed by some to be impossible due to epistemological and paradigmatic differences. Clinicians' perspectives are important determinants of how different medical disciplines are used together.
