Lipidomics Profiling of the Linoleic Acid Metabolites After Whole-Body Vibration in Humans.

Methods Mol Biol

July 2024

Bone-Muscle Research Center, College of Nursing and Health Innovation, The University of Texas at Arlington, Arlington, TX, USA.

Bioactive lipids have been identified as dynamic signaling lipid mediators (LMs). These fats have the ability to activate responses and control bodily functions either directly or indirectly. Linoleic Acid (LA) and Alpha Linoleic Acid (ALA) are types of omega 3 fatty acids that possess inflammatory properties and promote resolution of inflammation either through their own actions or through their metabolites known as oxylipins.

Isolation of Mitochondria from Murine Skeletal Muscle.

Methods Mol Biol

July 2024

Bone-Muscle Research Center, Department of Kinesiology, College of Nursing and Health Innovation, University of Texas at Arlington, Arlington, TX, USA.

Skeletal muscle is one of the largest tissues in human body. Besides enabling voluntary movements and maintaining body's metabolic homeostasis, skeletal muscle is also a target of many pathological conditions. Mitochondria occupy 10-15% volume of a muscle myofiber and regulate many cellular processes, which often determine the fate of the cell.

Zebrafish as a Model for Lipidomics and Similar Investigations.

Methods Mol Biol

July 2024

The Musculoskeletal Genetics Laboratory, The Azrieli Faculty of Medicine, Bar-Ilan University, Safed, Israel.

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) has emerged as a pivotal model organism in vertebrate development research over several decades. Beyond its contributions to developmental biology, zebrafish have increasingly played a crucial role in the field of lipidomics. Lipidomics, a comprehensive analysis of lipids within biological systems, offers profound insights into lipid metabolism and signaling pathways.

Article Synopsis
  • The relationship between muscle and bone tissues is crucial in understanding musculoskeletal health, focusing on how they communicate with each other.
  • Recent studies emphasize the importance of lipid signaling—specifically phospholipids, sphingolipids, and eicosanoids—in regulating cellular functions and metabolic processes in these tissues.
  • The chapter also discusses the consequences of impaired lipid signaling on musculoskeletal disorders and explores potential therapeutic strategies for improving treatment options.

Purpose: HIV biomedical intervention uptake is suboptimal among Black sexually minoritized men (SMM) and transgender women (TW). Venues where people meet and interact shape HIV-related risk and prevention behaviors. We aimed to construct GPS-defined venue-based affiliation networks and identify the unique set of venues that could maximize reach of HIV biomedical interventions among Black SMM and TW.

A biobehavioral observational study to understand the multilevel determinants of cardiovascular health in Black women: the BLOOM Study protocol.

BMC Womens Health

July 2024

Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation, Arizona State University, Phoenix, AZ, USA.

Background: The racial/ethnic and gender disparities in cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality in the United States are evident. Across nearly every metric, non-Hispanic Black women have poorer overall cardiovascular health. Emerging evidence shows a disproportionately high burden of increased CVD risk factors in Black women of childbearing age, which has a far-reaching impact on both maternal and child outcomes, resulting in premature onset of CVD and further widens the racial disparities in CVD.

To examine the association between scope-of-practice (SoP) regulations and racial disparities in pediatric mental health services. We used the National Survey of Children's Health (2016-2020; n = 33,790) to examine racial disparities in unmet mental health care needs and receipt of mental health medication between states with and without SoP expansions for psychologists and nurse practitioners (NP). Our primary outcomes were (1) unmet mental health care needs and (2) receipt of mental health medication.

Individuals with chronic pain report disproportionally higher rates of trauma, yet it is unclear whether different types of trauma (eg, sexual, accidental trauma) are associated with worse pain outcomes. The present study sought to 1) identify subgroups of people with chronic pain based on trauma type, and 2) determine whether subgroups differ in terms of pain characteristics over a 2-year period. Individuals with chronic pain (N = 1,451) participated in an online study and completed self-report questionnaires at baseline, 3-, 12-, and 24-month follow-up.

Coerced condomless sex is a prevalent form of sexual coercion that is associated with severe negative health consequences. This scoping review addresses the current lack of synthesized qualitative evidence on coerced condomless sex. Our systematic literature search yielded 21 articles that met review eligibility criteria.

Objective: Men's coercive condom use resistance (CUR) with female partners is common and is associated with greater alcohol consumption than men's noncoercive CUR engagement. Prior research indicates that emotion-related factors are relevant to alcohol-involved coercive CUR. Thus, in this alcohol administration study, we examined emotional factors as distal and proximal predictors of alcohol-involved coercive CUR among young men who have sex with women.

The built environment has been linked to physical activity (PA) behaviors, yet there is limited knowledge of this association among lower-income midlife and older adults who are insufficiently active. The present cross-sectional study utilized baseline data collected between October 2017 and November 2019 from a clustered randomized controlled trial to determine how built environment attributes were associated with PA behaviors among midlife and older adults (n = 255) residing in or near affordable housing sites (n = 10). At each site, perceptions of the built environment were collected and scored at the participant level via the abbreviated Neighborhood Environment Walkability Survey (NEWS-A), while objective built environment attributes were measured and scored by trained research staff using the Physical Activity Resource Assessment (PARA).
