Good sleepers and patients with insomnia symptoms (poor sleepers) were tracked with two measures of arousal; conventional polysomnography (PSG) for electroencephalogram (EEG) assessed cortical arousals, and a peripheral arterial tonometry device was used for the detection of peripheral nervous system (PNS) arousals associated with vasoconstrictions. The relationship between central (cortical) and peripheral (autonomic) arousals was examined by evaluating their close temporal dynamics. Cortical arousals almost invariably were preceded and followed by peripheral activations, while large peripheral autonomic arousals were followed by cortical arousals only half of the time.

Using this technique, estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) has been specifically implicated in a multitude of behaviors in mice, including sexual, aggressive, locomotor, and maternal behaviors, in a variety of brain regions, including the medial preoptic area, ventromedial hypothalamus, and amygdala. In this chapter, we describe the techniques involved in the generation of the small hairpin RNAs (shRNAs) specifically designed to silence ERα, the construction of the adeno-associated viral (AAV) vector for delivery of the shRNA, the procedures to confirm the silencing of ERα (in vitro and in vivo) and in vivo delivery of the shRNAs to the brains of animals.

Arsenate (As V) is the predominant inorganic species of arsenic in oxic aquatic environments. Chronic water quality criteria for arsenate have not been established due to the scarcity of relevant studies on its impact on aquatic biota. We examined the acute and chronic effects of arsenate on the benthic amphipod , an important test organism for ecotoxicological studies.

Reactions of Nursing Students When Faced With Violations of the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics.

A qualitative study was conducted with 10 nursing students to evaluate how students respond to breaches of standards of practice by clinical nurses. Statements were identified and analyzed with Colaizzi's method. Three main themes emerged: 1) Violations of the ANA Code of Ethics were witnessed by students (handling medications/equipment incorrectly, failing to comply with infection control, violating patient privacy).

Humans are universally exposed to low levels of phthalate esters (phthalates), which are used to plasticize polyvinyl chloride. Phthalates exert adverse effects on the development of seminiferous cords in the fetal testis through unknown toxicity pathways. To investigate the hypothesis that phthalates alter seminiferous cord development by disrupting retinoic acid (RA) signaling in the fetal testis, gestational day 15 fetal rat testes were exposed for 1-3 days to 10-6 M all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) alone or in combination with 10-6-10-4 M mono-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP) in ex vivo culture.

Angiogenesis, a highly regulated process, is exploited by tumors like breast cancer to ensure a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients and is key for tumor survival and progression. Energetic Modalities as a Self-Care Technique to Reduce Stress in Nursing Students.

This article describes the outcomes of nursing students taking a course in complementary and alternative therapies focusing on energetic modalities that were used as a means of self-care. Students kept journal logs and did a formal presentation for the class. Nursing students reported decreased stress and improved concentration, academic performance, productivity, and problem-solving while experiencing a greater appreciation of their clinical experiences.

Parental and God Representations Among Individuals with Psychosis: A Grounded Theory Analysis.

Religiousness, spirituality, and social support have all been identified as having a positive impact on overall mental health outcomes. The current study describes quantitative and qualitative assessment of parental and God representations among individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (N = 46). Six salient themes emerged; participants described the importance of caregiver love and nurturance, need for God, loss of family members, love of God, concrete support provided by parents, and the ability to tolerate ambivalent feelings toward parents.

As refugee populations grow, mental health professionals must implement culturally and ethnically appropriate strategies to assess and treat individuals from diverse backgrounds. The qualitative technique can be used to observe the expression pattern changes from resting to stimulated leukocytes.
