The Plasmodium Lactate Dehydrogenase (pLDH) used in BIOCREDIT® malaria test kit is claimed to be heat-stable. This study aimed to evaluate the heat stability and field performance of three BIOCREDIT® kits.

Leydig cell tumors are rare but are the most common nongerm cell gonadal tumors. They are mostly benign but malignant variants have been reported. Leydig cells constitute the main androgen-synthesizing compartment in adult males but are also capable of estrogen production.

Urethral length and its relationship with anthropometric parameters in adult male Nigerians.

Background: The available literature on urethral length in adult males is limited. To the best of our knowledge, such measurement has never been carried out amongst Nigerian and African men. This study aimed to document average urethral length as well as the relationship between urethral length and age, and anthropometric parameters amongst the Nigerian male adult population to add to the database for urethral length.

Analysis of 87 Nephrectomies in a Tertiary Healthcare Center in Nigeria.

Background: Nephrectomy is one of the most frequently performed operations on the kidney. It is necessary for treatment of malignant as well as some benign renal conditions.

Methodology: This was a five-year retrospective review of all adult patients who had open nephrectomy in Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria between January 2014, and December 2019.

Effect of Angiotensin receptor blockade on Plasma Osmolality and Neurohumoral Responses to High Environmental Temperature in Rats Fed a High Salt Diet.

Plasma osmolality (pOsmol) and neurohumoral signals play important roles in the pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases. Our study investigated the effect of high environmental temperature (HET) on neurohumoral responses and pOsmol in rats fed a high salt diet (HSD), with and without angiotensin II receptor blockade (ARB), using telmisartan.  Fifty-six male 8-week old Sprague-Dawley rats (95-110g) were randomly assigned into seven groups of 8 rats.

Diethyl nitrosamine (DEN) induced cirrhosis-hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) model associates cancer progression with oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. This study investigated the effects of mitoquinol mesylate (MitoQ), a mitochondrial-targeted antioxidant on DEN-induced oxidative damage in HCC Wistar rats. Monopolar transurethral resection of the prostate using water as the irrigation fluid: Our initial experience.

Background: Monopolar transurethral resection of the prostate (M-TURP) has been the gold standard of surgical intervention in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia with the indication for surgery. This can be achieved using varieties of irrigation fluids.

Objectives: To document our experience with M-TURP using water as irrigation fluid in 123 consecutive patients.

Molecular mechanism of mitoquinol mesylate in mitigating the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma-in silico and in vivo studies.

The safety and efficacy of mitoquinol mesylate (MitoQ) in attenuating the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Wistar rats has been reported. However, the binding modes for MitoQ as well as its molecular mechanisms in cirrhosis and liver cancer have not been fully investigated. This study sought to understand the structural and molecular mechanisms of MitoQ in modulating the expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and mitochondrial succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) in cirrhotic-HCC rats.

Cervical Decompression for Myelopathy in a Resource-Poor Region: Initial Experience.

Background: The aim of this study was to document the initial experience and challenges of cervical decompression in a resource-poor region.

Methods: Forty-three patients with cervical myelopathy who had surgery were included in the study. Details including evaluations pre- and postoperative (at 6 weeks and 6 months) using the Nurick score were recorded prospectively.

Introduction: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men aged 40 years and older. Incidence and mortality rates are higher in African men. PCa is amenable to early detection by screening which can prevent and reduce cancer deaths.

Transabdominal repair of vesicovaginal fistulae: A 10-year tertiary care hospital experience in Nigeria.

Background: Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) is still a major cause for concern in many developing countries. Arguments continue as to the best approach for repair. This study aimed to present our experience with transabdominal VVF repair.

Surgical decompression for traumatic spinal cord injury in a tertiary center.

Background: There are controversies regarding the importance and timing of spinal cord decompression following trauma. Documented evidence shows that early decompression in the setting of acute spinal cord injury (SCI) improves neurologic outcomes. Our objective was to evaluate the outcome of posttraumatic spinal cord decompression with or without spinal stabilization in our region.

Knowledge, attitudes and screening practices regarding prostatic diseases among men older than 40 years: a population-based study in Southwest Nigeria.

Introduction: Despite the global increase in awareness of prostatic diseases resulting from widespread availability of screening tools, there is no evidence that the knowledge, attitudes and screening practices of Nigerian men have improved regarding prostatic diseases.

Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study amongst 305 community-dwelling men. Respondents were selected using multi-staged sampling techniques.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and the factors influencing the healthcare-seeking behavior of men with LUTS.

Materials And Methods: A cross-sectional survey was performed of 658 men selected using multi-staged sampling techniques. They were interviewed about LUTS and their healthcare-seeking behavior.

Background: In our practice, we noticed that patients respond differently when pacemaker insertion is recommended to them. We then saw the need to study how African patients accept elective pacemaker implantation.

Aim: The study was conducted to determine African patients' responses to elective pacemaker insertion.

Prevalence and associated risk factors of Kola nut chewing among secondary school students in Osogbo, Nigeria.

The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence and pattern of Kola nut use among secondary school students in Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria. The study also aimed to determine the association of socio-demographic variables (of the students and their parents) with kola nut chewing. A questionnaire consisting of socio-demographic variables, the stimulant use section of the WHO Students Drug Use Questionnaire was administered on three hundred and eighty-five (385) randomly selected students of the two Local Government Areas of Osogbo.

A case control study of psychiatric morbidities among subjects with leprosy in Lagos, Nigeria.

Objectives: To determine the pattern of psychiatric morbidity prevalent among leprosy patients and to compare it with two control groups; those suffering from Tinea vesicolor and Normal subjects.

Design: Eighty-eight leprosy patients were matched for age and sex with those suffering from Tinea vesicolor as well as normal subjects. The subjects were assessed for psychiatric morbidity through a clinical interview with PSE-9.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection. The incidence of this infection has been on the rise in recent times. It is estimated that approximately 6 million new HPV infections are acquired each year in the United States alone, and prevalence data suggest that as many as 24 million American adults--that is, 1 in 5--may be infected with HPV.

Low cost methods for secondary prevention of cervical cancer in developing countries.

Background: Cervical cancer is both a preventable and a curable disease- preventable because the pre-invasive stage can be detected by screening and curable because the very early stage can be cured. It is the commonest genital cancer among females in Nigeria. The incidence and mortality from this disease in developing countries is very high.

Bradypacing: indications and management challenges in Nigeria.

Background: Permanent pacemaker implantation is a life-saving procedure that is performed worldwide. There is paucity of reports on pacemaker surgery in Nigeria. The aims of the study were to determine the indications for pacemaker insertion, the demographic distribution of the patients requiring it, the electrocardiographic (ECG) changes, and the management challenges in Nigeria.
