Introduction Patient-clinician communication is a key factor in patient satisfaction with care. Clinicians take medical language courses to improve communication with linguistically diverse populations, yet little is known about how patients perceive clinicians' skills. Methods We designed a prospective, comparative survey study of patient perception of clinician communication using a convenience sampling of health professionals enrolled in an interprofessional medical Spanish course.

The Use of Virtual Standardized Patients for Practice in High Value Care.

Introduction: This study examined the influence of high value care (HVC)-focused virtual standardized patients (VSPs) on learner attitudes toward cost-conscious care (CCC), performance on subsequent standardized patient (SP) encounters, and the correlation of VSP performance with educational outcomes.

Method: After didactic sessions on HVC, third-year medical students participated in a randomized crossover design of simulation modalities consisting of 4 VSPs and 3 SPs. Surveys of attitudes toward CCC were administered before didactics and after the first simulation method.

Background: The decades-long opioid epidemic and the more recent COVID-19 pandemic are two interacting events with significant public health impacts for people with opioid use disorder (OUD). Most published studies regarding the intersection of these two public health crises have focused on community, state, or national trends using pre-existing data. There is a need for complementary qualitative research aimed at identifying how people with opioid use disorder (OUD) are understanding, experiencing, and navigating this unprecedented time.

Background And Hypothesis: Rotator cuff tears have a wide variability in presentation, with some causing pain and reduced function but others remaining completely asymptomatic. Sleep disturbances are a primary driver for patients with rotator cuff tears to see a physician, and one of the main goals of rotator cuff repair (RCR) surgery is to restore normal sleep patterns in these patients. The primary purpose of this study aimed to determine the percentage of patients undergoing RCR who report preoperative sleep disturbances.

Risk Prediction Models for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease: The CRIC Study.

Background: Individuals with CKD may be at high risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). However, there are no ASCVD risk prediction models developed in CKD populations to inform clinical care and prevention.

Methods: We developed and validated 10-year ASCVD risk prediction models in patients with CKD that included participants without self-reported cardiovascular disease from the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) study.

Background: Inappropriate Clostridioides difficile testing has adverse consequences for patients, hospitals, and public health. Computerized clinical decision support (CCDS) systems in the electronic health record (EHR) may reduce C. difficile test ordering; however, effectiveness of different approaches, ease of use, and best fit into healthcare providers' (HCP) workflow are not well understood.

Patient involvement in assessment of postgraduate medical learners: A scoping review.

Context: Competency-based assessment of learners may benefit from a more holistic, inclusive, approach for determining readiness for unsupervised practice. However, despite movements towards greater patient partnership in health care generally, inclusion of patients in postgraduate medical learners' assessment is largely absent.

Methods: We conducted a scoping review to map the nature, extent and range of literature examining the inclusion (or exclusion) of patients within the assessment of postgraduate medical learners.

Orbital Radiation for Thyroid Eye Disease: A Report by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Purpose: To review the current literature on the safety and efficacy of orbital radiation for the management of thyroid eye disease (TED).

Methods: A literature search was conducted last in February 2021 of the PubMed database to identify all articles published in the English language on original research that assessed the effect of orbital radiation on TED. The search identified 55 articles, and 18 met the inclusion criteria for this assessment.

Topical opioid formulations offer a potential solution to manage pain and decrease the use of systemic opioids. Synthesis of use and efficacy of topical opioids in dermatological conditions has not been well characterized. We conducted a systematic search of the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases from 1980 to February 2021.

The Use of Biologics During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, there has been considerable discussion regarding the use of biologics in patients with inflammatory skin conditions, such as psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa, and atopic dermatitis. This article discusses clinical trial data, real-world evidence, and guidelines and recommendations for biologics that inhibit tumor necrosis factor, interleukin (IL)-12/23, IL-17, IL-23, and IL-4/13 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Across these inflammatory skin conditions, existing data generally suggest that biologics do not seem to increase the risk of COVID-19 infection or worsen COVID-19 outcomes.
