Heparan sulfate (HS) is a non-immunogenic antigen, and developing antibodies against specific sulfated patterns in HS poses significant challenges. Herein, we employed an innovative immunization strategy that exploits the molecular mimicry of HS to generate antibodies against HS sequences. Mice were immunized with synthetic sulfated oligo-l-idose () that mimics optimum 67% of the conserved structure of HS ligands.

Background: Sepsis is a threat to global health, and domestically is the major cause of in-hospital mortality. Due to increases in inpatient morbidity and mortality resulting from sepsis, healthcare providers (HCPs) would accrue significant benefits from identifying the syndrome early and treating it promptly and effectively. Prompt and effective detection, diagnosis, and treatment of sepsis requires frequent monitoring and assessment of patient vital signs and other relevant data present in the electronic health record.

Viral inflammation contributes to pathogenesis and mortality during respiratory virus infections. IRF3, a critical component of innate antiviral immune responses, interacts with pro-inflammatory transcription factor NF-κB, and inhibits its activity. This mechanism helps suppress inflammatory gene expression in virus-infected cells and mice.

Background: Extracellular vesicles, or microvesicles, are a large family of membrane-bound fluid-filled sacs that cells release into the extracellular environment. Extracellular microvesicles (EMVs) are essential for cell-to-cell communications that promote wound healing. We hypothesize a correlation between the concentration of EMVs in wound fluid and the percentage of wound healing in treated chronic, nonhealing, wounds.

Interferon (IFN) regulatory factors (IRF) are key transcription factors in cellular antiviral responses. IRF7, a virus-inducible IRF, expressed primarily in myeloid cells, is required for transcriptional induction of interferon α and antiviral genes. IRF7 is activated by virus-induced phosphorylation in the cytoplasm, leading to its translocation to the nucleus for transcriptional activity.

Objective: Malignant wounds develop when neoplastic cells invade the skin either locally or by lymphatic and haematogenous spread. They can present as hard-to-heal wounds and underlying causes include: primary skin cancer; metastasis of extracutaneous primary malignancy; malignant transformation of a hard-to-heal wound; iatrogenic injury; and cutaneous forms of cancers of non-skin origin. High clinical suspicion for a malignant wound should be confirmed with skin biopsy.

Soft tissue reconstruction of the foot can be a complex task to undertake when presented with challenging wounds. The foot comprises thick, glabrous skin with its own unique soft tissue anatomy that is suited to withstand its necessary functional demands. "Spare parts" reconstruction provides an option for closure of complicated skin wounds encompassing areas of large, unsalvageable defects.

Provider workforce diversity is a key component of improving healthcare quality and addressing healthcare disparities. Furthermore, the traditional approach of "score-centered" application metrics do not consistently correlate with meeting milestones in surgery, nor do they adequately predict a surgical resident's clinical strength and operative abilities. We present here an adaptable process by which surgical residency programs can identify their values and incorporate holistic review into their resident selection process to improve resident selection and physician workforce diversity.

We present the case of a symptomatic patient with two separate accessory navicular bones, a novel finding that does not fall within current classification standards. Furthermore, there is a paucity of current literature with regard to the management of symptomatic cases. Accessory navicular bones, sometimes referred to as os naviculare, are ossicles that can occur in multiple configurations and are considered developmental anomalies.

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) are increasing in prevalence and severity in the Great Lakes region, as well as both globally and locally. CyanoHABs have the potential to cause adverse effects on human health due to the production of cyanotoxins from cyanobacteria. Common routes of exposure include recreational exposure (swimming, skiing, and boating), ingestion, and aerosolization of contaminated water sources.

Cultured epithelial autografts (CEAs) have been used for decades as a treatment for massive burn injuries. Cultured epithelial autografts allow for wounds to heal by taking a small sample and growing a patient's own epithelium in culture to create large, graftable sheets. This technique is especially useful in large wounds where donor sites are limited compared with conventional skin grafting.

Interferon (IFN) regulatory factor 3 (IRF3) is a transcription factor activated by phosphorylation in the cytoplasm of a virus-infected cell; by translocating to the nucleus, it induces transcription of IFN-β and other antiviral genes. We have previously reported IRF3 can also be activated, as a proapoptotic factor, by its linear polyubiquitination mediated by the RIG-I pathway. Both transcriptional and apoptotic functions of IRF3 contribute to its antiviral effect.
