A novel cell encapsulatable cryogel (CECG) with macro-porous structures and high permeability: a three-dimensional cell culture scaffold for enhanced cell adhesion and proliferation.

Hydrogel scaffold is a popular cell delivery vehicle in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine due to its capability to encapsulate cells as well as its modifiable properties. However, the inherent submicron- or nano-sized polymer networks of conventional hydrogel will produce spatial constraints on cellular activities of encapsulated cells. In this study, we endeavor to develop an innovative cell encapsulatable cryogel (CECG) platform with interconnected macro-pores, by combining cell cryopreservation technique with cryogel preparation process.

Efficacy of cognitive behavioural therapy with medication for patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder: A multicentre randomised controlled trial in China.

Background: Meta-analyses support the efficacy of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in Western cultures. However, there are no adequately powered multicentre studies in China. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of treatment with CBT combined with medication and medication alone in OCD patients in China.

Therapeutic efficacy and safety of chamomile for state anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder, insomnia, and sleep quality: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials and quasi-randomized trials.

This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to study the efficacy and safety of chamomile for the treatment of state anxiety, generalized anxiety disorders (GADs), sleep quality, and insomnia in human. Eleven databases including PubMed, Science Direct, Cochrane Central, and Scopus were searched to retrieve relevant randomized control trials (RCTs), and 12 RCTs were included. Random effect meta-analysis was performed by meta package of R statistical software version 3.

Germline-Derived Gain-of-Function Variants of Gs-Coding Gene Identified in Nephrogenic Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuresis.

Background: The stimulatory G-protein -subunit encoded by exons 1-13 (-Gs) mediates signal transduction of multiple G protein-coupled receptors, including arginine vasopressin receptor 2 (AVPR2). Various germline-derived loss-of-function -Gs variants of maternal and paternal origin have been found in pseudohypoparathyroidism type Ia and pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism, respectively. Specific somatic gain-of-function -Gs variants have been detected in McCune-Albright syndrome and may result in phosphate wasting.

Late fracture of Groshong ports: A report of the three cases.

Background: Totally implantable venous access devices are valuable tools for total parenteral nutrition, chemotherapy, and long-term intravenous therapy. However, late catheter fracture is a well-known complication of totally implantable venous access device, particularly in Groshong silicone catheter. Recently, a specific type of totally implantable venous access device made with Groshong silicone has been introduced to facilitate power injection of contrast medium for enhanced computed tomography.

Condoliase for treatment of lumbar disc herniation.

Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is generally treated with a conservative therapy, and surgery is the only therapeutic option currently available for patients unresponsive to the conservative therapy. In the 1980s, chemonucleolysis with chymopapain, a protease, was widely used as the intermediate treatment between conservative therapy and surgical therapy in the Western countries. However, since chymopapain was withdrawn from the market in 2002 for non-scientific commercial reasons, chemonucleolysis has not been a therapeutic option for LDH.

High probability of follow-up termination among AYA survivors after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation.

The need for long-term follow-up (LTFU) after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) has been increasingly recognized for managing late effects such as subsequent cancers and cardiovascular events. A substantial population, however, has already terminated LTFU at HCT centers. To better characterize follow-up termination, we analyzed the Japanese transplant registry database.

Background: Oral health is thought to be associated with diet quality, and socioeconomic status (SES) affects both oral health and diet. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the number of teeth and dietary intake as well as nutritional biomarker, considering the subjects' SES.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data from 2049 individuals aged ≥ 50 years from the National Integrated Project for Prospective Observation of Non-communicable Disease and its Trends in the Aged 2010.

Supplementation with extract of Gynostemma pentaphyllum leaves reduces anxiety in healthy subjects with chronic psychological stress: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

Background: The ethanol extract of Gynostemma pentaphyllum Makino leaves (EGP) has been reported recently to have anxiolytic effects on chronically stressed mice models.

Purpose: We aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of EGP on anxiety level in healthy Korean subjects under chronic stressful conditions.

Sensory processing in children with autism spectrum disorder and the mental health of primary caregivers.

Background: Sensory processing difficulties, which commonly occur in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), are expected to have negative effects on the primary caregiver's mental health. The aim of this study was to examine the association between sensory processing difficulties in children with ASD and the mental health of primary caregivers.

Methods: A total of 707 primary caregivers (mothers in the present study) and their children with ASD (4-18 years of age) participated in this study.

Enhanced colorimetric detection of norovirus using in-situ growth of Ag shell on Au NPs.

Norovirus (NoV) is a leading cause of acute gastroenteritis. The low infectious dose and environmental stability of NoV facilitate its effective transmission through a variety of modes such as food, water and person-to-person. The available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for NoV detection has low sensitivity due to the low catalytic activity of the peroxidase used, and thus, a reliable ultrasensitive bioassay is needed.

The Westward Journey of Alfalfa Leaf Curl Virus.

Alfalfa leaf curl virus (ALCV), which causes severe disease symptoms in alfalfa ( L.) and is transmitted by the widespread aphid species, Koch, has been found throughout the Mediterranean basin as well as in Iran and Argentina. Here we reconstruct the evolutionary history of ALCV and attempt to determine whether the recent discovery and widespread detection of ALCV is attributable either to past diagnostic biases or to the emergence and global spread of the virus over the past few years.

Effects of Ziyin Jianghuo Ningxin decoction plus dehydroepiandrosterone and femoston in treatment of patients with menopausal symptoms.

Objective: To determine the therapeutic effect of Ziyin Jianghuo Ningxin Decoction (ZYJHNXD) plus dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) in patients suffering from menopausal symptoms identified as, in terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine, symptom pattern of Yin deficiency with hyperactive fire.

Methods: Totally 180 postmenopausal women aged 40 to 60 years were assigned into four groups and accepted femoston, femoston with ZYJHNXD, femoston with DHEA, femoston with ZYJHNXD and DHEA therapies, respectively, for three months. Common questionnaire-based measure instruments included modified Kupperman index (MKI), Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HAMA), and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD).

The association between urinary Alzheimer-associated neuronal thread protein and cognitive impairment in late-life depression: a controlled pilot study.

Accumulation of tau protein is associated with both Alzheimer's disease (AD) and late-life depression (LLD). Alzheimer-associated neuronal thread protein (AD7c-NTP), which is closely linked with the tau protein, is elevated in the cerebrospinal fluid and urine of AD patients. This study examined the association between urinary AD7c-NTP and late-life depression with cognitive impairment.

Neurochemical evidence for differential effects of acute and repeated oxytocin administration.

A discrepancy in oxytocin's behavioral effects between acute and repeated administrations indicates distinct underlying neurobiological mechanisms. The current study employed a combination of human clinical trial and animal study to compare neurochemical changes induced by acute and repeated oxytocin administrations. Human study analyzed medial prefrontal metabolite levels by using H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy, a secondary outcome in our randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial of 6 weeks intranasal administrations of oxytocin (48 IU/day) and placebo within-subject design in 17 psychotropic-free high-functioning men with autism spectrum disorder.

UBL3 modification influences protein sorting to small extracellular vesicles.

Exosomes, a type of small extracellular vesicles (sEVs), derived from multivesicular bodies (MVBs), mediate cell-to-cell communication by transporting proteins, mRNAs, and miRNAs. However, the molecular mechanism by which proteins are sorted to sEVs is not fully understood. Here, we report that ubiquitin-like 3 (UBL3)/membrane-anchored Ub-fold protein (MUB) acts as a posttranslational modification (PTM) factor that regulates protein sorting to sEVs.

LDL-C does not cause cardiovascular disease: a comprehensive review of the current literature.

For half a century, a high level of total cholesterol (TC) or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) has been considered to be the major cause of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease (CVD), and statin treatment has been widely promoted for cardiovascular prevention. However, there is an increasing understanding that the mechanisms are more complicated and that statin treatment, in particular when used as primary prevention, is of doubtful benefit. Areas covered: The authors of three large reviews recently published by statin advocates have attempted to validate the current dogma.

[Efficacy and safety of № I Empirical Prescription for Chronic Prostatitis in the treatment of type Ⅲ refractory chronic prostatitis].

Objective: To evaluate the efficiency and safety of № I Empirical Prescription for Chronic Prostatitis (№ I EPCP) in the treatment of type Ⅲ refractory chronic prostatitis.

Methods: We randomly assigned 53 cases of type Ⅲ refractory chronic prostatitis with damp-heat and blood stasis to an experimental and a control group to receive № I EPCP at 1 dose per day and saw palmetto extract at 160 mg bid), respectively, all for 8 weeks. Before and after 4 and 8 weeks of treatment, we obtained The National Institute of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (NIH-CPSI) scores, Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndrome Scores (TCMSS), maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax), average urinary flow rate (Qavg), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) scores and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) scores, and compared them between the two groups of patients.

A study of novel bilateral thermal capsulotomy with focused ultrasound for treatment-refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder: 2-year follow-up.

Background: Recently, a new thermal lesioning approach using magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) was introduced for the treatment of neurologic disorders. However, only 2 studies have used this approach for treatment-refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and follow-up was short-term. We investigated the efficacy and safety of bilateral thermal lesioning of the anterior limb of the internal capsule using MRgFUS in patients with treatment-refractory OCD and followed them for 2 years.

The association between whole blood concentrations of heavy metals in pregnant women and premature births: The Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS).

Background: Heavy metals are widely distributed in the environment. Recent reports have demonstrated the risk of preterm birth following heavy metal exposure. Preterm births are classified as early and late, depending on the duration of pregnancy, and are associated with increased risk of congenital illnesses such as heart failure, asthma, etc.
