Effectiveness of Buspirone in Alleviating Anxiety Symptoms in Patients with Depressive Disorder: A Multicenter Prospective Observational Study in Korea.

Objective: We aimed to investigate the effectiveness of buspirone as an adjunctive therapy for alleviating anxiety symptoms in patients with depressive disorders who are already taking antidepressants.

Methods: This was an open-label prospective multicenter non-interventional observational study conducted over 12 weeks. We enrolled 180 patients diagnosed with depressive disorders according to DSM-5 criteria and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) scores ≥ 18.

Home-Based Cardiac Rehabilitation Among Attendees From a Large Health Care System During the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Background: Few studies have evaluated home-based cardiac rehabilitation (HBCR) during the pandemic, compared to prepandemic center-based CR (CBCR), with respect to patient characteristics, participation rates, and its efficacy on clinical metrics, health-related quality of life (QoL), and modifiable risk factors.

Objectives: We aimed to describe patient characteristics and participation rates for those attending HBCR compared to patients who attended CBCR and compare the effects of HBCR vs CBCR on clinical metrics, health-related QoL, and modifiable risk factors in CR patients pre vs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study comparing 511 HBCR patients and 765 CBCR patients from the Mayo Clinic Health System.

Effectiveness of the addition of visual aids to conversational preoperative education in glaucoma filtering surgery: A randomized controlled trial.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of preoperative visual aids on anxiety and pain management in patients with low educational backgrounds undergoing glaucoma filtering surgery.

Methods: A randomized, single-blinded, single-center clinical trial was conducted at a tertiary eye hospital in Shantou, China. Patients scheduled for glaucoma filtering surgery were randomly assigned to either a conventional oral education group or a visual aids group.

Paradoxical Inflammatory Bowel Disease Induced by Golimumab in a Patient With Ankylosing Spondylitis: A Case Report and Systematic Review.

Paradoxical reactions (PRs) to biologic medications, such as psoriasis, arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), have been increasingly recognized. The aim of reporting this case is to establish an association between golimumab and exacerbation or new (de novo) IBD in patients with axial spondyloarthritis (SpA). Our case involves a young patient with juvenile-onset ankylosing spondylitis (AS) who developed de novo IBD following golimumab therapy for active spinal disease.

Efferocytosis in macrophages typically engages an anti-inflammatory positive feedback regulatory mechanism. In osteoarthritis (OA), characterized by imbalanced inflammatory homeostasis, the proinflammatory state of macrophages in the immune microenvironment can be reversed through enhanced efferocytosis. This study develops an in situ proefferocytosis hydrogel microsphere (macrophage polarity converter, H-C@IL) for OA treatment.

Effect of ketamine on anxiety: findings from the Ketamine for Adult Depression Study.

Background: Anxiety disorders and treatment-resistant major depressive disorder (TRD) are often comorbid. Studies suggest ketamine has anxiolytic and antidepressant properties.

Aims: To investigate if subcutaneous racemic ketamine, delivered twice weekly for 4 weeks, reduces anxiety in people with TRD.

Epigenetic Modification of Muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptors in Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Head and Neck.

Background/aim: The five members of the mammalian muscarinic acetylcholine receptor family are encoded by the cholinergic receptor, muscarinic, 1-5 (CHRM1-5) genes. CHRM genes are incriminated in formation of various cancer types, but their roles in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) are improperly understood. Aberrant epigenetic modifications of specific tumor-suppressor genes and oncogenes are known to promote cancer development.

Excellent response to levetiracetam for recurrent prolonged sleep attacks in an 18-year-old male: a case report.

Background: Sleep disorders are a common health problem that can be classified into many types that are distinguished by their history and characteristics. In this case report, we discuss a case of a patient suffering from recurrent unusual prolonged sleep attacks lasting up to 9 days that responded excellently to levetiracetam.

Case Presentation: An 18-year-old Syrian male patient presented to the neurology department complaining of recurrent prolonged sleep episodes lasting for 9 days.

High locoregional recurrence rates and potential wound infections remain a significant challenge for postoperative breast cancer patients. Herein, we developed a dual-network hyaluronic acid (HA) nanocomposite hydrogel composed of herring sperm DNA (hsDNA) bridged methacrylated HA (HAMA) and FeMg-LDH-ppsa nanohybrid chelated catechol-modified HA (HADA) for the prevention of breast cancer recurrent, anti-infection, and promoting wound healing. Dynamic reversible hsDNA cross-linking combined with metal-catechol chelating renders the hydrogel injectability, rapid self-healing ability, and enhanced mechanical properties.

Efficacy of Oriental Exercises for Non-Motor Symptoms and Quality of Life in Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder without a definitive cure. Oriental exercises (OEs) have emerged as a complementary and alternative therapy for PD, but their efficacy in ameliorating non-motor symptoms (NMS) and quality of life (QOL) remains uncertain. This systematic review and meta-analysis actively investigated the efficacy of OEs in addressing NMS and enhancing QOL and sought to offer recommendations for optimal OE regimens for PD patients.

ROS-induced therapy can eradicate breast tumors when combined with thermal ablation, but excessive ROS also threatens peritumoral tissue with inflammation. To eradicate tumors and avoid inflammatory sequela, it is necessary to generate ROS in treatment stage and scavenge ROS in prognostic stage. However, it is a great challenge to reverse ROS in different stages.

Covered Stent Correction for Sinus Venosus Atrial Septal Defects, an Emerging Alternative to Surgical Repair: Results of an International Registry.

Background: Covered stent correction for a sinus venosus atrial septal defect (SVASD) was first performed in 2009. This innovative approach was initially viewed as experimental and was reserved for highly selected patients with unusual anatomic variants. In 2016, increasing numbers of procedures began to be performed, and in several centers, it is now offered as a standard of care option alongside surgical repair.

Association between the HAL score and the development of progressive pulmonary fibrosis in idiopathic interstitial pneumonia: A prospective observational study.

Background: Progressive pulmonary fibrosis (PPF) is a critical concern in interstitial lung disease (ILD) management. The HAL score, which incorporates honeycombing (H), age >75 years (A), and serum lactate dehydrogenase >222 U/L (L), can predict acute exacerbations in patients with idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (IIP). This study aims to evaluate the predictive utility of the HAL score for PPF development.

Effectiveness and safety of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation for depression in patients with epilepsy.

Objective: Our study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) for treating mild to moderate depression in patients with epilepsy (PWE).

Methods: A single-arm, prospective, multi-center, pre-post controlled study was conducted in Eastern China. After a four-week baseline period, PWE with mild to moderate depression began treatment with taVNS, administered for 30 min, three times daily, over a 12-week period.

Identification of a novel imidazole-derived GABA agonist isopropoxate: simultaneous detection and quantification of imidazole-derived analogs from human hairs in abused cases by LC-MS/MS.

Purpose: Distribution and abuse of imidazole-derived γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) agonists, such as etomidate and metomidate, and their analogs have been encountered frequently especially in China. The aim of this study was to identify etomidate, metomidate, propoxate, and isopropoxate more accurately by establishing a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method and applying it to real forensic cases.

Methods: One mg of the seized powder was dissolved in 1 mL of methanol, and subjected to GC-MS and LC-MS/MS.

Takayasu arteritis masquerading as brucellosis: a case report.

This study reports a unique case of a 19-year-old male with Takayasu arteritis initially misdiagnosed as brucellosis due to persistently positive brucella serology. Despite multiple anti-brucellosis treatments, symptoms persisted until the correct diagnosis of Takayasu arteritis was made, Subsequent immunosuppressive therapy for Takayasu arteritis led to symptom improvement and normalization of serological markers. This highlights the challenge of distinguishing between these conditions and the potential for immunosuppression to impact brucella serology in such cases.

A 3D bioprinted adhesive tissue engineering scaffold to repair ischemic heart injury.

Adhesive tissue engineering scaffold (ATES) devices can be secured on tissues by relying on their intrinsic adhesive properties, hence, avoiding the complications such as host tissue/scaffold damage that are associated with conventional scaffold fixation methods like suturing or bioglue. This study introduces a new generation of three-dimensional (3D) bioprinted ATES systems for use as cardiac patches to regenerate the adult human heart. Tyramine-modified methacrylated hyaluronic acid (HAMA-tyr), gelatin methacrylate (GelMA), and gelatin were used to create the hybrid bioink formulation with self-adhesive properties.

Advanced spectroscopic approach for exploring the structural, optical, and electronic properties in dye-functionalized chitosan biopolymers.

This study employed advanced spectroscopic techniques to investigate the structural and optical properties of chitosan (CS) biopolymer films modified with natural dyes from Cosmos Sulphureus Cav. (CSC) flowers. FTIR results indicated that the inclusion of CSC dyes led to broader absorbance and decreased transmittance.

Depression, Anxiety, and Pain Predict Quality of Life in Patients with Differentiated Thyroid Cancer Postradiotherapy Ablation in Taiwan: A 48-Week Follow-Up Study.

Despite the generally good prognosis of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC), impairments in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) remain a major concern in these patients. This study examined the patterns and predictors of change in mental and physical HRQoL in DTC survivors following radiotherapy ablation. Two hundred patients with DTC who received radiotherapy ablation in southern Taiwan between 2015 and 2018 were interviewed using the Taiwan version of the 36-item Short-form Health Survey (SF-36), the Taiwanese Depression Questionnaire (TDQ), and the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HAM-A) at baseline and after 24 and 48 weeks of treatment.

Efficacy of acupuncture in ameliorating anxiety in Parkinson's disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis with trial sequential analysis.

Background: Although numerous studies have explored acupuncture for alleviating Parkinson's disease (PD) symptoms, specific methods focusing on reducing anxiety in these patients are lacking. Preliminary research indicates that acupuncture may improve anxiety in patients with Parkinson's; however, high-quality evidence is lacking. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis (TSA) to assess the efficacy of acupuncture in managing anxiety symptoms in PD.

Background And Aim: Binge-eating behavior and anxiety disorders pose a significant public health issue worldwide, as it has severe implications for both the physical and mental health of the adolescent population. The present study evaluated the prevalence of binge-eating behavior, anxiety disorders, and associated factors among the northern Saudi adolescent population. Furthermore, we assessed the correlation between binge eating and anxiety.

In this study, we synthesized a series of adhesive, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory hydrogels using free radical polymerization with materials including methacrylated hyaluronic acid (HAMA), N-[tris(hydroxymethyl)methyl]acrylamide (THMA), and 3-(bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)propyl methacrylate (DPAMA). By leveraging the strong affinity of zinc(II)-dipicolylamine coordination complexes for the phosphorylated groups in dexamethasone sodium phosphate (DMSP), Zn and DMSP were successfully incorporated into the hydrogel.

Three-dimensional (3D) organotypic skin in vitro has attracted increasing attention for drug development, cosmetics evaluation, and even clinical applications. However, the severe contraction of these models restricts their application, especially in the analyses based on barrier functions such as percutaneous penetration. For the full-thickness skin equivalents, the mechanical properties of the dermis scaffold plays an important role in the contraction resistance.
