University of Arizona, College of Medicine - Tucson, Department of Otolaryngology, 1501 N Campbell Ave, Tucson, AZ 85724, United States of America.

Background: Subglottic stenosis (SGS) is a condition leading to narrowing of the upper airway which can lead to dyspnea and life-threatening airway obstruction. Although other proposed grading systems exist, the Cotton Myer (CM) and percent stenosis systems are the most widespread in clinical practice. Despite this, the CM system has not yet been validated for visual assessment of SGS.

The timely restoration of lost blood in hemorrhaging patients with trauma, especially those who are hemodynamically unstable, is of utmost importance. While intravenous access has traditionally been considered the primary method for vascular access, intraosseous (IO) access is gaining popularity as an alternative for patients with unsuccessful attempts. Previous studies have highlighted the higher success rate and easier training process associated with IO access compared with peripheral intravenous (PIV) and central intravenous access.

Unlabelled: Human cytomegalovirus (hCMV) is a ubiquitous facultative pathogen, which establishes a characteristic latent and reactivating lifelong infection in immunocompetent hosts. Murine CMV (mCMV) infection is widely used as an experimental model of hCMV infection, employed to investigate the causal nature and extent of CMV's contribution to inflammatory, immunological, and health disturbances in humans. Therefore, mimicking natural human infection in mice would be advantageous to hCMV research.

Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies are a widely heterogeneous group of muscle diseases and encompass multiple clinicopathologic entities. Our case presentation describes a 70-year-old male who presented with progressively worsening dyspnea, along with worsening proximal muscle weakness in the bilateral lower extremities. Extensive clinical evaluation revealed a creatine kinase level of 105 IU/L, severe and chronic widespread myopathy seen on electromyography (EMG), and asymmetric but widespread muscle atrophy with fibro-fatty replacement seen on ultrasonography.

Background/objectives: The immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have been increasingly associated with severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs). These reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) and acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) are uncommon but potentially lethal. Despite the severity of these reactions and growing association with the ICIs, their specific risk and mortality rates have been largely unexplored.

Human cytomegalovirus (hCMV) is a ubiquitous latent persistent herpesvirus infecting 60-90% of the population worldwide. hCMV carriage in immunocompetent people is asymptomatic; thus, hCMV can be considered a component of normative aging. However, hCMV powerfully modulates many features of the immune, and likely other, systems and organs.

Background: Previous research has emphasized the importance of efficient ventilation in suppressing COVID-19 transmission in indoor spaces, yet suitable ventilation rates have not been suggested.

Materials And Methods: This study investigated the impacts of mechanical, natural, single-sided, cross-ventilation, and three mask types (homemade, surgical, N95) on COVID-19 spread across eight common indoor settings. Viral exposure was quantified using a mass balance calculation of inhaled viral particles, accounting for initial viral load, removal via ventilation, and mask filtration efficiency.

Department of Epidemiology, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology, College of Human Medicine, Michigan State University, 15 Michigan St. NE, Grand Rapids, MI, 49503, USA. Electronic address:

Objective: Anti-Müllerian hormone is a reliable measure of ovarian reserve associated with menopause timing and fertility. Previous studies have observed that individuals with endometriosis have lower anti-Müllerian hormone levels than those without. However, sample sizes have been small and information is limited regarding the long-term influence of endometriosis on anti-Müllerian hormone levels among the general population, which may have important implications for menopause timing and chronic disease risk.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to evaluate the cost-efficiency of a toripalimab-gemcitabine-cisplatin treatment for recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma compared to a similar pembrolizumab regimen in 1,207 new U.S. cases anticipated in 2024.
  • Simulation modeling assessed costs of treatment over one and two years, revealing that toripalimab saves approximately $2,223 per patient per cycle, leading to significant overall savings that could allow expanded access to more treatment cycles.
  • The results indicate that these savings could fund additional treatments, allowing up to 252 extra full regimens of toripalimab-gemcitabine-cispl

Background: Gastrocutaneous fistula is a rare complication following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, a commonly performed bariatric surgery. While most ECFs respond to conservative management, some do not close despite adequate nutritional support, infection source control, and drainage management. As such, the chronicity of these difficult-to-treat wounds can be physically and economically costly to patients.

Acute respiratory failure is a common reason for emergency department visits and hospital admissions. Diverse underlying physiologic abnormalities lead to unique aspects about the most common causes of acute respiratory failure: acute decompensated heart failure, acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and acute de novo hypoxemic respiratory failure. Noninvasive respiratory support strategies are increasingly used methods to support work of breathing and improve gas exchange abnormalities to improve outcomes relative to conventional oxygen therapy or invasive mechanical ventilation.
