Research on kidney diseases is being transformed by the rapid expansion and innovations in omics technologies. The analysis, integration, and interpretation of big data, however, have been an impediment to the growing interest in applying these technologies to understand kidney function and failure. Targeting this urgent need, the University of Michigan O'Brien Kidney Translational Core Center (MKTC) and its Administrative Core established the Applied Systems Biology Core.

Coccidioidomycosis is a fungal infection endemic to the Southwestern United States which is associated with high morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised hosts. Serology is the main diagnostic tool, although less sensitive among immunocompromised hosts. (1→3)-β-D-glucan (BDG) is a non-specific fungal diagnostic test that may identify suspected coccidioidomycosis and other invasive fungal infections.

Background: Prior research suggests that women with endometriosis are at greater risk of coronary heart disease. Therefore, our objective was to prospectively investigate the association between laparoscopically confirmed endometriosis and risk of incident stroke during 28 years of follow-up.
Methods: Participants in the NHSII cohort study (Nurses' Health Study II) were followed from 1989 when they were between the ages of 25 to 42 until 2017 for development of incident stroke (ischemic and hemorrhagic).
Immun Ageing

Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, USA.
Background: Cellular changes in adaptive immune system accompany the process of aging and contribute to an aging-related immune phenotype (ARIP) characterized by decrease in naïve T-cells (T) and increase in memory T-cells (T). A population-representative marker of ARIP and its associations with biological aging and age-related chronic conditions have not been studied previously.
Methods: We developed two ARIP indicators based on well understood age-related changes in T cell distribution: T/(T (Central Memory) + T (Effector Memory) + T (Effector)) (referred as T/T) in CD4 + and CD8 + T-cells.

The progressive impairment of immunity to pathogens and vaccines with aging is a significant public health problem as the world population shifts to an increased percentage of older adults (> 65). We have previously demonstrated that cells obtained from older volunteers have delayed and defective induction of type I interferons and T cell and B cell helper cytokines in response to TLR ligands when compared to those from adult subjects. However, the underlying intracellular mechanisms are not well described.

Background: Treatment of small-caliber vessel lesions using flow diverters remains challenging because of vasculature's narrow luminal diameter and tortuosity. This in turn makes navigation and delivery of conventional devices with standard microcatheters more difficult. The Silk Vista Baby (SVB, Balt) flow diversion device was designed for ease of use in vessels with a smaller diameter, distal lesions, and 0.

Urinothorax is a rare cause of pleural effusion, which is seen in patients with obstructive uropathy, blunt trauma, or ureteric injury during abdominal surgical procedures. Clinical symptoms may include dyspnea, chest pain, cough, fever, abdominal pain, and decreased urine output. Diagnosis is made by thoracentesis, which would reveal fluid with a urine-like odor, and pleural fluid analysis, which would show if fluid is transudative in nature with a pH lower than 7.

Background: Ameloblastoma imposes significant morbidity and high-recurrence rates following surgery and radiation therapy. Although 89% of cases harbor oncogenic mutations, the role of targeted therapy is undefined.
Case: We describe a case of a 40-year-old male with multiply recurrent, locally invasive ameloblastoma of the posterior maxillary ridge.

The lack of literature on Indigenous conceptions of health and the social determinants of health (SDH) for US Indigenous communities limits available information for Indigenous nations as they set policy and allocate resources to improve the health of their citizens. In 2015, eight scholars from tribal communities and mainstream educational institutions convened to examine: the limitations of applying the World Health Organization's (WHO) SDH framework in Indigenous communities; Indigenizing the WHO SDH framework; and Indigenous conceptions of . Participants critiqued the assumptions within the WHO SDH framework that did not cohere with Indigenous knowledges and epistemologies and created a schematic for conceptualizing health and categorizing its determinants.

Introduction: A systematic literature review was conducted to determine whether physical activity levels during adolescent and young adult years were associated with a reduced lifetime risk of breast cancer among carriers of deleterious mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.
Methods: Ovid/MEDLINE, Embase, CENTRAL, WOS, and CINAHL were searched for articles including information about adolescent and young adult physical activity and breast cancer incidence among women carrying deleterious BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations (search was initiated in October 2019; last update and full analyses were in March 2021). Independent reviewers screened articles at the title/abstract and full-text levels, resolving differences by consensus with lead authors.

Simultaneous bilateral spontaneous pneumothorax is a rare life-threatening condition that can cause severe respiratory distress, hypoxemia, and death. Spontaneous pneumothorax has been reported as an uncommon but severe complication in patients recovering from COVID-19 pneumonia. Even fewer cases of spontaneous bilateral tension pneumothorax have been reported as a result of infection.

Purpose: The incidence of severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) in the USA was reported as 1 in 58,000 live births. In Arizona, it was anticipated that newborn screening would identify two to four cases of SCID per year. This estimate did not consider ethnic nuances in Arizona, with higher percentages of Native American and Hispanic populations compared to national percentages.

Central nervous system infection with Coccidioides spp. is fatal if untreated and complications occur even when therapy is directed by experienced clinicians. We convened a panel of clinicians experienced in the management of coccidioidal meningitis to summarize current controversies and provide consensus for the management of this difficult infection.

Hemophilia is the deficiency of plasma clotting factor VIII (hemophilia A) or IX (hemophilia B) where management focuses on the prevention and treatment of acute bleeding symptoms and their sequelae. The most concerning risk is for life-threatening bleeding, including intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), which is caused by head trauma. Guidelines exist for the evaluation and management of pediatric head trauma, including the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) protocol, but limited evidence exists for when hemophilia patients present to the emergency department (ED), specifically with head trauma.

Damage to axons is a core feature of ischemic stroke and cerebrovascular disease. The burden of axonal injury is correlated with the acute clinical deficits, the underlying burden of ischemic brain injury, the prognosis of recovery, and may be a meaningful therapeutic target for brain repair. Neurofilament light chain (NfL) has been identified as a blood-based biomarker that reflects neuroaxonal damage resulting from stroke.

Coverage of posttraumatic and chronic wounds at the distal leg is a difficult problem due to limited soft tissue available for local flaps. The sural flap is a versatile and effective method for reconstruction in this area since it does not need a significant amount of time or assistance to complete. Improving the survival of these flaps is critically dependent on understanding the basics of flap circulation and why recent modifications were introduced.

Female firefighters have occupational exposures which may negatively impact their reproductive health. Anti-müllerian hormone (AMH) is a clinical marker of ovarian reserve. We investigated whether AMH levels differed in female firefighters compared to non-firefighters and whether there was a dose-dependent relationship between years of firefighting and AMH levels.
