Sulfonylureas (SU) are commonly prescribed as oral hypoglycemic agents for the management of diabetes mellitus (DM). We postulated that SU possess antimicrobial properties due to their structural resemblance to the antimicrobial agent sulfamethoxazole. Using data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database, we enrolled patients diagnosed with DM between 2000 and 2013 and followed them for a three-year period.

Tear trough deformity (TTD) is a significant cosmetic concern, with current treatments relying primarily on invasive injectable fillers, which are costly and carry risks of complications. Despite the widespread use of hyaluronic acid (HA) in cosmetic applications, its poor dermal permeation has limited the development of effective topical fillers for TTD.This study aim to develop and evaluate a novel hyaluronic acid nanogel (nanofiller, NF) as a non-invasive topical filler for TTD.

Laetrile is a semi-synthesis product of amygdalin, whereas amygdalin is a naturally occurring substance in many plants. Both compounds have a nitrile functional group that, when activated by the intestinal enzyme β-glucosidases, releases hydrogen cyanide.

Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) describes a group of rare benign and cancerous lesions originating from the trophoblast cells of the placenta. These neoplasms are unconventional entities, being one of the few instances in which cancer develops from the cells of another organism, the foetus. Although this condition was first described over 100 years ago, the specific genetic and non-genetic drivers of this disease remain unknown to this day.

In natural environments, the growth and development of trees are continuously affected by phosphorus (P) starvation stress. However, the mechanisms through which trees balance stem growth and P distribution remain unknown. This study found that in the woody model species poplar, the P loss in stems is more severe than that in roots and leaves under P starvation conditions, thereby inhibiting stem development and reducing the expression of numerous genes related to wood formation, including PagSND1-B1.

Hospital mergers have increased significantly since 2010, driven by factors such as healthcare policy changes, reimbursement, economies of scale, and quality improvement goals. However, limited evidence exists about how these mergers affect the quality of care and cancer outcomes. We conducted a difference-in-differences analysis to assess the impact of hospital consolidation on cancer outcomes.

Aims: To translate the Supportive and Palliative Care Indicators Tool (SPICT) into Chinese and conduct preliminarily tests of its performance in hospitalized patients with cancer.
Design: A cross-sectional validation study conducted from January to March 2024.
Methods: SPICT 2022 was translated in both directions, following the Brislin translation model, and the Chinese version culturally debugged through expert consultation and pre-testing.

Background: There are numerous articles, book chapters, and published guidelines on the topic of clinical ethics in the use of artificially administered nutrition and hydration, which often incorporates end-of-life (EOL) nutrition care and support. Components of clinical ethics involve the importance of ethical principles, patient-centered care, and shared decision-making. However, there is sparse information on how to educate patients and caregivers on this subject.

This study aimed to develop and evaluate a novel fibroblast activation protein (FAP)-specific tracer, fluorine-18-labeled fibroblast activation protein inhibitor-FUSCC-07 ([F]F-FAPI-FUSCC-07), for use in both preclinical and clinical settings. Preclinical evaluations were conducted to assess the stability and partition coefficient of [F]F-FAPI-FUSCC-07. Experiments involving human glioma U87MG cells demonstrated its cellular uptake and inhibitory properties.

Background: The association, if any, between the transmitral mean pressure gradient (TMPG) after mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair and 1-year mortality is controversial in patients undergoing mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair with the MitraClip system. We sought to estimate the association between intraoperatively measured residual mitral regurgitation (rMR) and TMPG and 1-year mortality among patients undergoing mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair to facilitate decisions on additional devices.
Methods: In patients with severe secondary (functional) MR, we analyzed registry data using generalized estimating equations.

Background/purpose: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a common malignancy often associated with poor prognosis due to chemoresistance. In this study, we investigated whether arecoline, a major alkaloid in betel nuts, can stimulate aldo-keto reductase family 1 member B10 (AKR1B10) levels in OSCC, promoting cancer stemness and leading to resistance to cisplatin (CDDP)-based chemotherapy.
Materials And Methods: Gain- and Loss- of AKR1B10 functions were analyzed using WB and q-PCR of OSCC cells.

Background/purpose: The extract of the soft coral has shown an anti-cancer activity in various cancer cells. However, its effect on the oral squamous cell carcinoma cell (OSCC) lines remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to investigate the anti-cancer effects of the extract of (C127) on the OSCC cells.

Background/purpose: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by basement membrane disruption, which plays a crucial role in its pathogenesis. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), a group of proteolytic enzymes, contribute to the degradation of the basement membrane. The specific MMPs secreted by keratinocytes in OLP lesions and relevant regulatory mechanisms are not fully understood.

Background/purpose: Revascularization procedures are used over apexification to treat teeth with necrotic pulp tissues and incomplete root formation. Clinically, inducing proliferation, migration, matrix deposition, and differentiation of stem cells from apical papilla (SCAPs) are critical for pulp regeneration. The study aimed to elucidate the impact of bone morphogenetic protein-4 (BMP-4) on plasminogen activation molecules and the osteogenic/odontogenic differentiation of SCAPs, as well as understand the related signaling mechanisms.

Background/purpose: Salivary microbiome has become a surrogate indicator of oral disease due to its collective reservoirs and convenience in sampling. However, failed clinical trials often lead to wastes of resources, indicating a need for preclinical models. In this pilot study, we aimed to compare the salivary microbiome by metagenomics analysis before and after lysogeny broth culture for prospective translational studies.
