Individuals at familial risk for mood disorders exhibit deficits in emotional processing and associated brain dysfunction prior to illness onset. However, such brain-behavior abnormalities related to familial predisposition remain poorly understood. To investigate robust abnormal functional activation patterns during emotional processing in unaffected at-risk relatives of patients with major depressive disorder (UAR-MDD) and bipolar disorder (UAR-BD), we performed a meta-analysis of task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging studies using Seed-based d Mapping (SDM) toolbox.

Article Synopsis
  • A study looked at the brains of young people (ages 10-18) with ADHD, some with a family history of bipolar disorder (BD) and some without.
  • The results showed that those at higher risk (with a family history) had more severe symptoms and smaller brain areas compared to those at lower risk and healthy controls.
  • These changes in brain structure may be linked to how serious their ADHD symptoms are, showing that having a family history of BD can affect brain development in kids with ADHD.

Purpose: To establish and validate a deep learning radiomics nomogram (DLRN) based on intratumoral and peritumoral regions of MR images and clinical characteristics to predict recurrence risk factors in early-stage cervical cancer and to clarify whether DLRN could be applied for risk stratification.

Methods: Two hundred and twenty five pathologically confirmed early-stage cervical cancers were enrolled and made up the training cohort and internal validation cohort, and 40 patients from another center were enrolled into the external validation cohort. On the basis of region of interest (ROI) of intratumoral and different peritumoral regions, two sets of features representing deep learning and handcrafted radiomics features were created using combined images of T2-weighted MRI (T2WI) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI).

  • This study developed a risk prediction model to estimate the odds of osteoporosis in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes, analyzing data from over 21,000 hospitalized patients in Southwest China from 2012 to 2022.
  • Key influencing factors for osteoporosis identified include age, sex, medical history (like hypertension and heart disease), with the final model showing an acceptable predictive accuracy (AUROC scores around 0.694 to 0.716).
  • A user-friendly online interface was created to make the predictive model accessible for individualized osteoporosis risk assessment.

Background: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is highly prevalent among youth with or at familial risk for bipolar-I disorder (BD-I), and ADHD symptoms commonly precede and may increase the risk for BD-I; however, associated neuropathophysiological mechanisms are not known. In this cross-sectional study, we sought to investigate brain structural network topology among youth with ADHD, with and without familial risk of BD-I.

Methods: We recruited 3 groups of psychostimulant-free youth (aged 10-18 yr), namely youth with ADHD and at least 1 biological parent or sibling with BD-I (high-risk group), youth with ADHD who did not have a first- or second-degree relative with a mood or psychotic disorder (low-risk group) and healthy controls.

Background: Timely and accurate outcome prediction plays a critical role in guiding clinical decisions for hypertensive ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke patients admitted to the ICU. However, interpreting and translating the predictive models into clinical applications are as important as the prediction itself. This study aimed to develop an interpretable machine learning (IML) model that accurately predicts 28-day all-cause mortality in hypertensive ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke patients.

Biomimetic Fibers Based on Equidistant Micropillar Arrays Determines Chondrocyte Fate via Mechanoadaptability.

Adv Healthc Mater

December 2023

State Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases, West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University, Chengdu, 610064, China.

It is recognized that the changes in the physical properties of extracellular matrix (ECM) result in fine-tuned cell responses including cell morphology, proliferation and differentiation. In this study, a novel patterned equidistant micropillar substrate based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is designed to mimic the collagen fiber-like network of the cartilage matrix. By changing the component of the curing agent to an oligomeric base, micropillar substrates with the same topology but different stiffnesses are obtained and it is found that chondrocytes seeded onto the soft micropillar substrate maintain their phenotype by gathering type II collagen and aggrecan more effectively than those seeded onto the stiff micropillar substrate.

MS-DCANet: A Novel Segmentation Network For Multi-Modality COVID-19 Medical Images.

J Multidiscip Healthc

July 2023

College of Medical Informatics, Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing, People's Republic of China.

Aim: The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has increased the public health burden and brought profound disaster to humans. For the particularity of the COVID-19 medical images with blurred boundaries, low contrast and different infection sites, some researchers have improved the accuracy by adding more complexity. Also, they overlook the complexity of lesions, which hinder their ability to capture the relationship between segmentation sites and the background, as well as the edge contours and global context.
