Henan Engineering Technology Research Center of Ultrasonic Molecular Imaging and Nanotechnology, Henan Provincial People's Hospital, People's Hospital of Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou, China.

Recently, the electronic waste (E-waste) has become the most serious environmental trouble because of the iteration of electronic products. Transparent conductive films (TCFs) are the key component of flexible electronic devices, so the development of devices based on degradable TCFs has become an important way to alleviate the problem of E-waste. Gelatin, one of the most prevalent natural biomacromolecules, has drawn increasing attention due to its good film-forming ability, superior biocompatibility, excellent degradability, and commercial availability at a relatively low cost, but has few applications in flexible electronics.

Hydrogels are functional materials that are similar to human skin and have received much attention in recent years for biomedical applications. However, the preparation of nontoxic, highly adhesive, and antimicrobial hydrogels in an efficient way remains a great challenge. Inspired by adhesive mussel foot proteins (mfps) which consist of abundant catecholic amino acids and lysine (Lys) residues, gallic acid-modified ε-poly-L-lysine (EPL/GA) was synthesized, and an active functional monomer (AA-EPL/GA) was then created through a reaction with acrylic acid (AA).

Various piezoelectric nanomaterials were utilized in ultrasound-mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), owing to their outstanding piezoelectric effect. However, the relationship between the morphology of those piezocatalysts and polymerization has not been clearly established. Herein, we employed different piezoelectric zinc oxide (ZnO) nanomaterials to achieve novel mechano-induced ATRP (mechano-ATRP).

Photoinduced atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) has been proved to be a versatile technique for polymer network formation. However, the slow polymerization rates of typical ATRP limited its application in the field of additive manufacturing (3D printing). In this work, we introduced carbon quantum dots (CQDs) for the first time to the ATRP in aqueous media and developed an ultrafast visible-light-induced polymerization system.

The utilizing light with broadband range has attracted lots of research interest for the photo induced reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP). However, it is still a challenge for a single catalyst to simultaneously respond to various lights with highly varied wavelengths. Here, we proposed a simple strategy for the preparation of a heterogeneous photocatalyst suitable for photo induced atom transfer radical polymerization (photoATRP) under full spectrum (from UV/vis light to NIR), by combining pyridine nitrogen doped carbon dots (N-CDs) and upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs).

Recently, versatile hydrogels with multifunctionality have been widely developed with emerging applications as wearable and implantable devices. In this work, we reported novel versatile hydrogels by self-catalyzing the gelation of an interpenetrating polymer network consisting of acrylic acid (AA) monomers and GA-modified collagen (GCOL) in situ decorated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The resultant hydrogel, namely AgNP@GCOL/PAA, has many desirable features, including good mechanical properties (such as 123 kPa, 916%, and 1961 J m for the fracture stress, strain and tearing energy) that match with those of animal skin, excellent self-healing performance, favorable conductivity and strain sensitivity as a flexible biosensor, and excellent antibacterial and anti-UV properties, as well as the strong adhesiveness on skin.

Molecular dynamics is employed to simulate the Soret effect on two binary liquid solutions with equimolar mixtures: normal pentane (-pentane, nC-5) and normal heptane (-heptane, nC-7) molecules plus normal decane (-decane, nC-10) and normal pentane molecules. Moreover, two coarse-grained force field (the CG-FF) potentials, which may depict inter-/intramolecular interactions fairly well among -alkane molecules, are developed to fulfill such investigations. In addition, thermal diffusion for the mass fraction of each of these -alkane molecules is simulated under an effect of a weak thermal gradient (temperature difference) exerting on solution systems from their hot to cold boundary sides.

With rising interior air pollution, health, and food shortage concerns, wood adhesives derived from non-food sustainable materials have therefore attracted considerable attention. Here we developed an eco-friendly cottonseed-lignin adhesive consisting of non-food defatted cottonseed flour (DCF), alkali lignin (AL), and graphene oxide (GO). The cation-π interaction, and hydrogen and covalent bonds between AL@GO and DCF collectively enhanced the cross-linking structure of the cured cottonseed-lignin adhesive, based on the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyses, scanning electron microscopy, and sol-gel tests.

Chemical pretreatment followed by enzymatic hydrolysis has been regarded as a viable way to produce fermentable sugars. Phenylsulfonic acid (PSA) pretreatment could efficiently fractionate the non-cellulosic components (hemicelluloses and lignin) from bamboo and result in increased cellulose accessibility that was 10 times that of untreated bamboo. However, deposited lignin could trigger non-productive adsorption to enzymes, which therefore significantly decreased the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of PSA-pretreated bamboo substrates.
