Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) is a valuable method for measuring particle flow velocities in plasma. However, conventional TDLAS using a plane-wave beam is sensitive only to the laser propagation direction. This limitation is particularly unfavorable for the observation of the particle transportation perpendicularly incident on the material in the plasma-material interaction.

Coordinated linear and rotational movements of endothelial cells compartmentalized by VE-cadherin drive angiogenic sprouting.

iScience

July 2023

Department of Physiological Chemistry and Metabolism, Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo, 7-3-1 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-0033, Japan.

Angiogenesis is a sequential process to extend new blood vessels from preexisting ones by sprouting and branching. During angiogenesis, endothelial cells (ECs) exhibit inhomogeneous multicellular behaviors referred to as "cell mixing," in which ECs repetitively exchange their relative positions, but the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Here we identified the coordinated linear and rotational movements potentiated by cell-cell contact as drivers of sprouting angiogenesis using and approaches.

Charge-Sign Dependent Cosmic-Ray Modulation Observed with the Calorimetric Electron Telescope on the International Space Station.

Phys Rev Lett

May 2023

Department of Physics and McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences, Washington University, One Brookings Drive, Saint Louis, Missouri 63130-4899, USA.

We present the observation of a charge-sign dependent solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) with the Calorimetric Electron Telescope onboard the International Space Station over 6 yr, corresponding to the positive polarity of the solar magnetic field. The observed variation of proton count rate is consistent with the neutron monitor count rate, validating our methods for determining the proton count rate. It is observed by the Calorimetric Electron Telescope that both GCR electron and proton count rates at the same average rigidity vary in anticorrelation with the tilt angle of the heliospheric current sheet, while the amplitude of the variation is significantly larger in the electron count rate than in the proton count rate.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons consisting of two or three rubicene substructures were designed as π-conjugated compounds embedding five-membered rings. The target compounds with t-butyl groups were synthesized by the Scholl reaction of precursors consisting of 9,10-diphenylanthracene units, even though a partially precyclized precursor was required for the synthesis of the trimer. These compounds were isolated as stable and dark blue solids.

Optical-referenceless optical frequency counter with twelve-digit absolute accuracy.

Sci Rep

May 2023

NTT Basic Research Laboratories, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, 3-1 Morinosato Wakamiya, Atsugi, Kanagawa, 243-0198, Japan.

A simpler and more accurate measurement of absolute optical frequencies (AOFs) is very important for optical communications and navigation systems. To date, an optical reference has been needed for measuring AOFs with twelve-digit accuracy because of the difficulty in measuring them directly. Here, we focus on an electro-optics-modulation comb that can bridge the vast frequency gap between photonics and electronics.

Fast screening framework for infection control scenario identification.

Math Biosci Eng

August 2022

Research Center for Space Science, Advanced Research Laboratories, Tokyo City University, 8-15-1 Todoroki, Setagaya, Tokyo 158-0082, Japan.

Due to the emergence of the novel coronavirus disease, many recent studies have investigated prediction methods for infectious disease transmission. This paper proposes a framework to quickly screen infection control scenarios and identify the most effective scheme for reducing the number of infected individuals. Analytical methods, as typified by the SIR model, can conduct trial-and-error verification with low computational costs; however, they must be reformulated to introduce additional constraints, and thus are inappropriate for case studies considering detailed constraint parameters.

ZnO nanoparticles coated and stearic acid modified superhydrophobic chitosan film for self-cleaning and oil-water separation.

Int J Biol Macromol

March 2023

College of Food Science and Engineering, Qingdao Agricultural University, Qingdao, Shandong Province 266109, China. Electronic address:

The aim of this study was to prepare superhydrophobic chitosan films using a ZnO nanoparticle coating and stearic acid hydrophobic modification. A 1 % concentration of ZnO nanoparticles and a 1 % concentration of stearic acid generated a superhydrophobic film with the largest contact angle (WCA) of 156°, which was attributed to the synergy of micro/nano-level hierarchical structure and low surface energy modification. The superhydrophobic film showed better stability to acid, alkali, heat, and UV irradiation than a neat chitosan film and a reduction in light transmittance of 14.

Cosmic-Ray Boron Flux Measured from 8.4  GeV/n to 3.8  TeV/n with the Calorimetric Electron Telescope on the International Space Station.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2022

Department of Physics and McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences, Washington University, One Brookings Drive, St. Louis, Missouri 63130-4899, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study measures how the boron flux in cosmic rays changes with energy and compares it to carbon flux using data from the Calorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) over approximately 6.4 years.
  • The researchers found a hardening in the boron spectrum beginning at around 200 GeV/n, indicating that boron and carbon have different energy dependences despite the observed similarities at certain transition energies.
  • They also suggest that the B/C ratio, along with their findings, supports recent observations indicating that secondary cosmic rays like boron experience more significant energy hardening than primary ones.
