Revisiting human language and speech production network: A meta-analytic connectivity modeling study.

Neuroimage

January 2025

Institute of Neuroscience, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taipei, Taiwan; Brain Research Center, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taipei, Taiwan; Department of Education and Research, Taipei City Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan. Electronic address:

In recent decades, converging evidence has reached a consensus that human speech production is carried out by large-scale hierarchical network comprising both language-selective and domain-general systems. However, it remains unclear how these systems interact during speech production and the specific contributions of their component regions. By utilizing a series of meta-analytic approaches based on various language tasks, we dissociated four major systems in this study: domain-general, high-level language, motor-perception, and speech-control systems.

Background/objectives: Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are a rapidly developing technology that captures and transmits brain signals to external sources, allowing the user control of devices such as prosthetics. BCI technology offers the potential to restore physical capabilities in the body and change how we interact and communicate with computers and each other. While BCI technology has existed for decades, recent developments have caused the technology to generate a host of ethical issues and discussions in both academic and public circles.

Baicalin and baicalein are the primary flavonoids derived from the desiccated root of , which is a member of the Lamiaceae family; these flavonoids have diverse pharmacological properties and show significant potential for the management of central nervous system disorders. Multiple studies have indicated that these substances effectively reduce the severity of illnesses such as depression, stroke, and degenerative disorders of the central nervous system by exerting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, regulating programmed cell death, and reducing mitochondrial malfunction. Recent studies have highlighted the connection between the accumulation of iron and the ability of baicalein to protect the nervous system.

Objective: The objective of this study was to compare 2 approaches for representing self-reported race-and-ethnicity, additive modeling (AM), in which every race or ethnicity a person endorses counts toward measurement of that category, and a commonly used mutually exclusive categorization (MEC) approach. The benchmark was a gold-standard, but often impractical approach that analyzes all combinations of race-and-ethnicity as distinct groups.

Methods: Data came from 313,739 respondents to the 2021 Medicare Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) surveys who self-reported race-and-ethnicity.

Despite the rapid development of entrepreneurship education among college students, limited research has examined the hindering role of Chinese parents in this process under the socio-cultural context of China. To address this gap, a quantitative study was conducted to investigate how entrepreneurship education enhances college students' entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) and the impact of Chinese parental psychological control (PPC). Data were collected from 1,411 college students using structured questionnaires and analyzed using hierarchical regression.

Suboptimal Attainment of Global Goals of Human Rights, Universal Health Coverage and Sustainable Development Goals in Gaza During 2023-2024.

Risk Manag Healthc Policy

December 2024

Department of International Affairs and Social Sciences, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Zayed University, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The Israel military occupation, ongoing for over 75 years, has profoundly impacted the health and well-being of Palestinians. Despite longstanding calls for Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and sustainable development, the response of global health systems and organizations to crises such as the recent large-scale military assault on Gaza in October 2023 has been inadequate. There is a critical need to examine why these global health approaches have failed and how they can be restructured to address the unique challenges in Gaza effectively.

Association between chronic pain and cognitive frailty among middle-aged and elderly individuals: evidence from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study.

Front Aging Neurosci

December 2024

Geriatric Neurological Department of the Second Medical Center and National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases, Chinese PLA General Hospital, Beijing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Cognitive frailty, a growing public health concern, is characterized by the co-occurrence of physical frailty and cognitive impairment without a dementia diagnosis.
  • A study using data from 17,705 Chinese adults aged 45 and older found that chronic pain is linked to a higher risk of developing cognitive frailty over time.
  • Managing chronic pain is crucial to reducing the risk of cognitive frailty, which can improve the quality of life for older adults and lessen the economic strain on families and society.

  • Community engagement (CE) is crucial for maintaining ethical integrity in genetics and genomics research (GGR) but lacks sufficient guidelines, especially in Uganda.
  • The study analyzes the experiences of GGR researchers, community members, and Research Ethics Committee (REC) members in Uganda to develop effective and ethical CE practices.
  • Findings reveal that while CE is often initiated during the sample collection stage, there is a need for earlier involvement, increased budgeting for CE, and inclusion of genetic counselors to address social issues raised by GGR.

An Entropy-Based Clustering Algorithm for Real-Time High-Dimensional IoT Data Streams.

Sensors (Basel)

November 2024

Department of Information Science, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, King Saud University, P.O. Box 11451, Riyadh 4545, Saudi Arabia.

The rapid growth of data streams, propelled by the proliferation of sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, presents significant challenges for real-time clustering of high-dimensional data. Traditional clustering algorithms struggle with high dimensionality, memory and time constraints, and adapting to dynamically evolving data. Existing dimensionality reduction methods often neglect feature ranking, leading to suboptimal clustering performance.

An Efficient Flow-Based Anomaly Detection System for Enhanced Security in IoT Networks.

Sensors (Basel)

November 2024

Department of Information Science, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, King Saud University, Riyadh P.O. Box 11451, Saudi Arabia.

The growing integration of Internet of Things (IoT) devices into various sectors like healthcare, transportation, and agriculture has dramatically increased their presence in everyday life. However, this rapid expansion has exposed new vulnerabilities within computer networks, creating security challenges. These IoT devices, often limited by their hardware constraints, lack advanced security features, making them easy targets for attackers and compromising overall network integrity.

Towards efficient IoT communication for smart agriculture: A deep learning framework.

PLoS One

November 2024

College of Engineering, Basic and Applied Science Institute, Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, Alexandria, Egypt.

The integration of IoT (Internet of Things) devices has emerged as a technical cornerstone in the landscape of modern agriculture, revolutionising the way farming practises are viewed and managed. Smart farming, enabled by interconnected sensors and technologies, has surpassed traditional methods, giving farmers real-time, granular information into their farms. These Internet of Things devices are responsible for collecting and sending greenhouse data (temperature, humidity, and soil moisture) for the required destination, to provide a comprehensive awareness of environmental factors critical to crop growth.

Constructing electric vehicle charging piles (EVCPs) is crucial for promoting electric vehicle (EV) sales. Yet, empirical evidence on the bidirectional relationship between EV sales and public EVCPs is limited, with most related works relying on simulations. We empirically investigate this relationship using panel vector autoregression (PVAR) across 95 Chinese cities from 2018 to 2022.
