Ph.D Program in Translational Medicine, College of Life Sciences, National Chung Hsing University, Taichung 40227, Taiwan; Department of Public Health, Fu Jen Catholic University, New Taipei City 24205, Taiwan; Institute of Genomics and Bioinformatics, National Chung Hsing University, Taichung 4022, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Background: Breast cancer has been the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in Taiwan since 2003. While genetic variants play a significant role in the elevated risk of breast cancer, their implications have been less explored within Asian populations. Variant-based polygenic risk scores (PRS) have emerged as valuable tools for assessing the likelihood of developing breast cancer.

Mammographic screening has contributed to a significant reduction in breast cancer mortality. Several studies have highlighted the correlation between breast density, as detected through mammography, and a higher likelihood of developing breast cancer. A polygenic risk score (PRS) is a numerical score that is calculated based on an individual's genetic information.

Background: Multiple pretreatment systemic inflammatory markers (SIMs) have been reported as predictors of pathological complete response (pCR) after neoadjuvant systemic therapy (NST) in patients with breast cancer (BC). However, the most significant SIM remains to be conclusively identified, and variations among different molecular subtypes remain unknown. The objective of the study was to identify the most significant SIM in patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) positive BC, to construct a pCR-predictive nomogram combining it with other clinicopathologic factors, and to evaluate its prognostic value on survival.

Chaperone-mediated autophagy degrade Dicer to promote breast cancer metastasis.

J Cell Physiol

April 2023

Division of General Surgery, Department of Surgery, Shuang Ho Hospital, Taipei Medical University, New Taipei, Taiwan.

Metastasis in breast cancer usually lead to the majority of deaths on clinical patients. Accordingly, diagnosis of metastasis at the early stage in breast cancer is important to improve the prognosis. We observed that Dicer protein levels are significant decrease in highly invasive breast cancer cells and usually correlated with poor clinical outcomes.

Prenatal and postnatal exposure to PM and the risk of tic disorders.

Paediatr Perinat Epidemiol

March 2023

Department of Occupational Safety and Health, College of Public Health, China Medical University, Taichung, Taiwan R.O.C.

Article Synopsis
  • Tic disorders are common neurodevelopmental issues in children, and the study explores whether exposure to particulate matter (PM2.5) during pregnancy and infancy affects their risk of developing these disorders.
  • A significant birth cohort study in Taiwan found that higher exposure to PM2.5 is linked with increased rates of tic disorders, particularly between 6-52 weeks after birth, with specific increases in risk noted for Tourette's disorder.
  • The researchers utilized advanced statistical models to analyze data from over 300,000 births and concluded that exposure to PM2.5 poses a risk, prompting the need for further research in this area.

(1) Background: Neoadjuvant therapy is widely used to treat locally advanced breast cancer. It has been recently shown that it can also improve the prognosis of patients during the early stages of breast cancer. In the past, advanced breast cancer with positive Human Epidermal growth factor Receptor 2 (HER2+) resulted in poor prognoses; however, outcomes have since changed after the introduction of HER2-targeting therapy.
