Global climate change is causing changes in rainfall patterns, impacting plant growth through its effect on photosynthesis, which relies on water.
A study in Kunming, China, examined how different rainfall intervals (5 days vs. 10 days) and amounts (40% increase or decrease) affect the leaf traits and photosynthetic performance of seedlings during both dry and rainy seasons.
Results indicated that optimal rainfall conditions (40% increase) enhanced photosynthesis and growth in dry seasons, while varied rainfall in the rainy season could promote photosynthesis, suggesting seedlings have different survival strategies based on rainfall variability.
