In 1820 two French scientists - Pierre Joseph Pelletier and Jean Bienaimé Caventou - discovered and named the active alkaloid substance extracted from cinchona bark: quinine. The bark from the 'wondrous' fever tree, and its antimalarial properties, however, had long been known to both colonial scientists and indigenous Peruvians. From the mid-seventeenth century, cinchona bark, taken from trees that grow on the eastern slopes of the Andes, was part of a global circulation of botanical knowledge, practice and profit.

The professional identity of scientists has historically been cultivated to value research over teaching, which can undermine initiatives that aim to reform science education. Course-Based Research Experiences (CRE) and the inclusive Research and Education Communities (iREC) are two successful and impactful reform efforts that integrate research and teaching. The aim of this study is to explicate the professional identity of instructors who implement a CRE within an established iREC and to explore how this identity contributes to the success of these programs.

A new genus and species within the family Polymorphidae Meyer, 1931 were erected to accommodate cystacanths recovered from the mesentery of individuals from a non-native population of the red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii (Girard), collected from South Carolina (USA). Morphological characteristics of the specimens collected included in both sexes a spindle-shaped body with a slender hindtrunk, two fields of markedly different sized spines on the foretrunk, the presence of a middle row of smaller scythe-shaped hooks on a proboscis armed with 19-20 longitudinal rows of 14-16 hooks; and in males, six cement glands, absence of genital spines, and a digitiform and spinose bursa (observed inverted). Sequencing portions of both the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) and large subunit ribosomal RNA genes was completed, followed by phylogenetic analysis of a concatenated alignment.

LoRa networks, widely adopted for low-power, long-range communication in IoT applications, face critical security concerns as radio-frequency transmissions are increasingly vulnerable to tampering. This paper addresses the dual challenges of privacy-preserving detection of tampered transmissions and the identification of unknown attacks in LoRa-based IoT networks. Leveraging Federated Learning (FL), our approach enables the detection of tampered RF transmissions while safeguarding sensitive IoT data, as FL allows model training on distributed devices without sharing raw data.

Domoic acid is a neurotoxin secreted by the marine diatom genus during toxic algal bloom events. California sea lions () are exposed to domoic acid through the ingestion of fish that feed on toxic diatoms, resulting in domoic acid toxicosis (DAT), which can vary from mild to fatal. Sea lions with mild disease can be treated if toxicosis is detected early after exposure.

Species conservation and management benefit from precise understanding of natural patterns of dispersal and genetic variation. Using recent advances in indirect genetic methods applied to both adult plants and dispersed seeds, we find that the mean seed dispersal in a threatened marine foundation plant (the eelgrass Zostera marina) is approximately 100-200 m. This distance is surprisingly more similar to that of wind-dispersed terrestrial seeds (~10s to 100s of meters) than the passive dispersal of marine propagules via currents (~10s to 100s of kilometres).

The relative rates of sexual versus asexual reproduction influence the partitioning of genetic diversity within and among populations. During range expansions, asexual reproduction often facilitates colonization and establishment. The arrival of the green alga Avrainvillea lacerata has caused shifts in habitat structure and community assemblages since its discovery in 1981 offshore of O'ahu, Hawai'i.

Long-range networks, renowned for their long-range, low-power communication capabilities, form the backbone of many Internet of Things systems, enabling efficient and reliable data transmission. However, detecting tampered frequency signals poses a considerable challenge due to the vulnerability of LoRa devices to radio-frequency interference and signal manipulation, which can undermine both data integrity and security. This paper presents an innovative method for identifying tampered radio frequency transmissions by employing five sophisticated anomaly detection algorithms-Local Outlier Factor, Isolation Forest, Variational Autoencoder, traditional Autoencoder, and Principal Component Analysis within the framework of a LoRa-based Internet of Things network structure.

Plastic is a ubiquitous environmental contaminant, resulting in widespread exposure across terrestrial and marine spaces. In the environment, plastics can degrade into microparticles where exposure has been documented in a variety of fauna at all trophic levels. Human epidemiological studies have found relationships between inhaled microplastics and oxidative stress and inflammation.

Background And Aims: Tobacco use spreads through social networks influencing social norms around tobacco use. However, the social norms scholarship is extremely diverse and occasionally conflicting, complicating efforts to understand how best to leverage social norms to reduce tobacco use. This study systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed this vast terrain by focusing on social norms measurement and mechanism, and intervention effectiveness and modality aimed at changing social norms around tobacco use and actual tobacco use.

We consider the existence of cohomogeneity one solitons for the isometric flow of -structures on the following classes of torsion-free -manifolds: the Euclidean with its standard -structure, metric cylinders over Calabi-Yau 3-folds, metric cones over nearly Kähler 6-manifolds, and the Bryant-Salamon -manifolds. In all cases we establish existence of global solutions to the isometric soliton equations, and determine the asymptotic behaviour of the torsion. In particular, existence of shrinking isometric solitons on is proved, giving support to the likely existence of type I singularities for the isometric flow.

Social norms are thought to spread through processes of collective contagion, requiring multiple social contacts for diffusion. The spread of harmful social norms is heightened with the spread of misinformation online, especially as falsehoods spread faster than truth. Social inoculation, an intervention approach developed in the 1960s, is an effective prophylactic against harmful social norms spread.

The Anson Street African Burial Ground Project, Mount Pleasant, SC, USA.
As part of the Anson Street African Burial Ground Project, we characterized the oral microbiomes of twelve 18th century African-descended individuals (Ancestors) from Charleston, South Carolina, USA, to study their oral health and diet. We found that their oral microbiome composition resembled that of other historic (18th-19th century) dental calculus samples but differed from that of modern samples, and was not influenced by indicators of oral health and wear observed in the dentition. Phylogenetic analysis of the oral bacteria, Tannerella forsythia and Pseudoramibacter alactolyticus, revealed varied patterns of lineage diversity and replacement in the Americas, with the Ancestors carrying strains similar to historic period Europeans and Africans.

The microbiota of hydrothermal vents has been widely implicated in the dynamics of oceanic biogeochemical cycling. Lithotrophic organisms utilize reduced chemicals in the vent effluent for energy, which fuels carbon fixation, and their metabolic byproducts can then support higher trophic levels and high-biomass ecosystems. However, despite the important role these microorganisms play in our oceans, they are difficult to study.
