Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a lethal X-linked recessive disorder caused by mutations in the gene and the subsequent lack of dystrophin protein. Corpus callosotomy (CC) is an established palliative surgery for human patients with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), especially those with generalized seizures and multiple or unknown epileptogenic focus. We examined the weight distribution of skeletal muscles of the red jungle fowl, then compared these values with those of domesticated populations to determine how muscle distribution has changed by selecting breeding. Sonia, Fayoumi, and Rhode Island Red were selected for comparison from livestock breeds, while Japanese Shamo and Thai fighting cocks were selected from cockfighting groups. This study investigated the effects of essential oil odors from Japanese citrus fruits, iyokan (Citrus iyo) and yuzu (Citrus junos), on human psychology and both the autonomic and central nervous systems. The inhalation of both essential oils significantly increased miosis rate and fingertip temperature and could induce parasympathetic dominance by suppressing sympathetic nerve activity. Oxyhemoglobin concentration in the prefrontal cortex increased after the inhalation of yuzu essential oil and decreased after the inhalation of iyokan essential oil.

Acetic acid bacteria (AAB) are industrial microorganisms used for vinegar fermentation. Herein, we investigated the distribution and genome structures of mitomycin C-inducible temperate phages in AAB. Transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed phage-like particles in 15 out of a total 177 acetic acid bacterial strains, all of which showed morphology similar to myoviridae-type phage.

In the present study, the expression of secretory components and vesicular transport proteins in the canine lacrimal gland was examined and morphometric analysis was performed. The secretory epithelium consists of two types of secretory cells with different morphological features. The secretory cells constituting acinar units (type A cells) exhibited higher levels of glycoconjugates, including β-GlcNAc, than the other cell type constituting tubular units (type T cells).

We developed a rapid and accurate method for quantifying gaseous phase odorants using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) in conjunction with GC-MS and used our system to quantify alkylpyrazine analogs in the Y-maze. Rapid extraction of volatile compounds in the vapor phase achieved accurate quantitative analysis of gaseous alkylpyrazine analogs at several locations in the Y-maze. We also used a series of three SPME fibers to quantify changes in the concentration over time.

Calicivirus infection in patients and animals is associated with the production of multiple inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α). Here we studied the feline calicivirus (FCV) non-structural proteins and found that the FCV protease was a key factor for TNF-α gene expression in cultured cells. The expression of the TNF-α gene in cells expressing FCV, human norovirus, and rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus protease was compared, revealing that the induction of TNF-α could be a common phenomenon during the infection by the viruses in the Caliciviridae.

Objective: The physiological expression of cell division cycle 42 (cdc42) in major salivary glands, and paracellular transport of fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran (FITC-dextran) in SMIE cells, which regulate cdc42 expression, was investigated to clarify the involvement of cdc42 in salivary production.
Design: The physiological expression of cdc42 in the rat submandibular gland, parotid gland, sublingual gland, and SMIE cells was detected using SDS-PAGE and western blotting. The paracellular transport of FITC-dextran in transwells was compared in transfected SMIE cells, exhibiting up- or downregulated cdc42 expression.

Sporothrix schenckii and allied species are thermodimorphic fungi widely distributed in nature which causes human and animal sporotrichosis, the most common subcutaneous mycosis globally. Sporotrichosis is acquired after a traumatic inoculation of soil or plant material contaminated with Sporothrix propagules or through bites and scratches from diseased cats. In Ascomycota, the master regulators of sex are MAT genes that lie in a single mating-type locus, in Sporothrix these are determined by two nonhomologous alleles, MAT1-1 and MAT1-2.
