Growth hormone (GH) transgenesis can be used to manipulate the growth performance of fish and mammals. In this study, homozygous and hemizygous GH-transgenic amago salmon (Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae) derived from a single female exhibited hypoglycemia. Proteomic and signal network analyses using iTRAQ indicated a decreased NAD/NADH ratio in transgenic fish, indicative of reduced mitochondrial ND1 function and ROS levels.

In a previous study, the three-dimensional structures of mitochondria in type I and type IIb muscle fibers of chicken were analyzed. The study reported differences in the shape of the mitochondria and the distribution of lipid droplets. In this study, we three-dimensionally analyzed mitochondria and lipid droplets of type II muscle fiber subtypes IIa, IIb, and IIc of chicken lateral iliotibial muscle in the same field of view using correlative light electron microscopy (CLEM) and array tomography methods.

Secretogranin II (SgII) and III (SgIII) function within peptide hormone-producing cells and are involved in secretory granule formation. However, their function in active amine-producing cells is not fully understood. In this study, we analyzed the expression profiles of SgII and SgIII in canine adrenal medulla and pheochromocytomas by immunohistochemical staining.

The heterocyclic compounds 2,6-dimethyl-4-propyl-1,3-oxathiane and 2,4-dimethyl-6-propyl-1,3-oxathiane were obtained by condensing 4-mercapto-2-heptanol and 2-mercapto-4-heptanol, respectively, with acetaldehyde. For both, separation of the eight stereoisomers was achieved capillary gas chromatography using heptakis(diethyl--butyldimethylsilyl)-β-cyclodextrin as the chiral stationary phase. Their configurations were assigned by combinations of enzyme-catalyzed kinetic resolutions, HPLC separations, and assessments of NMR data.

The multi-antifungal drug-resistant strain (NUBS21012) of Trichophyton rubrum was isolated from a patient with recurrent tinea corporis. The resistant strain encoded Phe at codon 393 instead of Leu (L393F) in the squalene epoxidase () gene. The expression of genes encoding ATP-binding cassette transporter proteins increased in the strain compared to that of other strains.

Muscle atrophy is a major health problem that needs effective prevention and treatment approaches. Chronic exercise, an effective treatment strategy for atrophy, promotes muscle hypertrophy, which leads to dynamic metabolic changes; however, the metabolic changes vary among myofiber types. To investigate local metabolic changes due to chronic exercise, we utilized comprehensive proteome and mass spectrometry (MS) imaging analyses.

Our previous studies suggested that Alaska pollack protein (APP) intake increases skeletal muscle mass and that it may cause a slow-to-fast shift in muscle fiber type in rats fed a high-fat diet after 56 days of feeding. In this study, we explored whether dietary APP induces acute and sustainable skeletal muscle hypertrophy in rats fed a normal-fat diet. Male 5-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups and fed a purified ingredient-based high-fat diet or a purified ingredient-based normal-fat diet with casein or APP, containing the same amount of crude protein.

With the shift in their social roles, modern zoos and aquariums are required to develop scientific research. Although zoos and aquariums worldwide have reported an increase in the number of papers they publish and the diversification of their fields in recent decades, the specific circumstances in Japan are slightly unclear. We listed peer-reviewed papers authored by Japanese zoos and aquariums using search engines and quantitatively evaluated the changes in the number of papers published over 62 years.

Skeletal muscle is the largest organ in the body and has a broad range of plasticity, undergoing atrophy in response to aging or disease and hypertrophy in response to nutritional supplements or exercise. Loss of skeletal muscle mass and force increases the risk of falls, impairs mobility, and leads to reduced quality of life. In a previous study, we demonstrated that taking in Alaska pollock protein (APP) for only 7 d increased the gastrocnemius muscle mass in rats.

The genus Prototheca consists of achlorophyllic algae that are ubiquitous in the environment and also occur in animal intestines; occasionally, infections in humans and animals are observed. In this study, we conducted tests of assimilative abilities and thermotolerance in comparison with morphological characteristics of six opportunistic species (Prototheca blaschkeae, Prototheca bovis, Prototheca ciferrii, Prototheca cutis, Prototheca miyajii, and Prototheca wickerhamii) along with Prototheca paracutis. Five of the seven species could be differentiated by physiological characteristics, but P.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is primarily caused by out-of-frame deletions in the dystrophin gene. Exon skipping using phosphorodiamidate morpholino oligomers (PMOs) converts out-of-frame to in-frame mutations, producing partially functional dystrophin. Four single-exon skipping PMOs are approved for DMD but treat only 8 to 14% of patients each, and some exhibit poor efficacy.

Much confusion exists about the chemical composition of widely sold products that utilize the cannabidiol (CBD) acronym and related terms such as "CBD oil", "CBD plus hemp oil", "full spectrum CBD", "broad spectrum CBD", and "cannabinoids". Their rational chemical and subsequent biological assessment requires both knowledge of the chemical complexity and the characterization of significant individual constituents. Applicable to hemp preparations in general, this study demonstrates how the combination of liquid-liquid-based separation techniques, NMR analysis, and quantum mechanical-based NMR interpretation facilitates the process of natural product composition analysis by allowing specific structural characterization and absolute quantitation of cannabinoids present in such products with a large dynamic range.
