Contractile injection systems (CISs) are a large group of phage tail-like nanostructures conserved among bacteria. Despite their wide distribution, the biological significance of CISs in bacteria remains largely unclear except for a few unicellular bacteria. Here, we show that Streptomyces lividans-a model organism of filamentous Gram-positive bacteria with highly conserved CIS-related gene clusters-produces intracellular CIS-like nanostructures ( phage tail-like particles [SLPs]) that affect phenotypes of this bacterium under hyperosmotic conditions.

Background: Biting midges (Ceratopogonidae) are capable of transmitting a variety of pathogens including viruses, trypanosomes and haemosporidia. The majority of Haemoproteus parasites are transmitted by biting midges predominantly of the genus Culicoides and are known to cause significant physical and reproductive impacts on both wild and domestic birds. In Japan, Haemoproteus had been detected from various avian hosts, but not from arthropod vectors.

Characterization of 5'-nucleotidases secreted from Streptomyces.

To study the ability of Streptomyces to utilize environmental nucleotides, we screened for strains exhibiting extracellular 5'-inosine monophosphate (IMP)-dephosphorylating activity in our collection of soil isolates and obtained two producers: NE5-10 and Y2F8-2. The enzyme responsible for the activity was purified from the culture supernatant of each strain, and its mass spectral data were used to identify the coding sequence. The gene was successfully identified in the whole genome sequence of each strain; it was located in a conserved gene cluster of phosphate-related functions and encoded an approximately 600-amino acid long protein containing an N-terminal secretion signal.

TEAD is a transcription factor responsible for the output of the tumor suppressor Hippo pathway. The transcriptional activity of TEAD requires molecular interaction with its transcriptional coactivator, YAP. Aberrant activation of TEAD is deeply involved in tumorigenesis and is associated with poor prognosis, suggesting that inhibitors targeting the YAP-TEAD system are promising as antitumor agents.

We evaluated the molars in Anderson's red-backed vole ( = 114) from the Kii Peninsula of Honshu, Japan. Two of the specimens are considered extremely old aged based on their dimensions and on the loss of alveolar capsules of M, and a third one is also old based on its strongly worn left M and M. Of the former two individuals, one showed an incipient closure of re-entrant angles at its basal end, as estimated from the difference between the occlusal patterns of the occlusal and basal surfaces of the left M.

The present study describes the clinical and pathological characteristics of skin lesions in two four-toed hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris). We performed inverse PCR to identify the genome of papillomavirus (PV) in the skin lesions and subsequently sequenced the full genome of the virus, which was tentatively named Atelerix albiventris papillomavirus 1 (AalbPV1). The overall sequences of the viral genomes of both four-toed hedgehogs were identical.
