Life (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology (Biochemistry Subdivision), College of Pharmacy, Taibah University, Madinah 41411, Saudi Arabia.

Being a central organ in homeostasis and maintaining the health of the biological system, kidneys are exposed to variable toxicants. Long-term exposure to nephrotoxic molecules causes chronic renal damage that causes fibrosis and loss of function. Such damage can be initiated by oxidative stress which provokes inflammation.

Development of a novel latent deoxyribonucleic acid detection technique for crime scene investigation using quartz tuning fork-based biosensor technology.

Forensic Sci Int

December 2024

Biological and Environmental Sensing Research Unit, King Abdullah Institute for Nanotechnology, King Saud University, P.O. Box 2455, Riyadh 11451, Saudi Arabia; Department of Physics and Astronomy, College of Science, King Saud University, Riyadh 11451, Saudi Arabia. Electronic address:

The forensic Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) fingerprinting is a tool for investigating crime scenes by identifying/tracing criminals and linking crime scenes. However, in cases where experts are unable to detect and identify any biological traces or human-derived cells at the crime scene or while testing the samples in the laboratories, all the advantages offered by forensic laboratories lose their significance. It becomes a waste of time, effort, and resources allocated to these laboratories.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The review investigates the establishment of diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) for pediatric brain CT scans in Saudi Arabia and compares them with data from nine other countries.
  • The findings reveal significant differences in CT doses, particularly concerning age groups, with specific DRLs provided for Saudi children aged 0-5 years and 6-15 years.
  • The study highlights the need for age-specific DRLs to enhance radiation safety and recommends adopting global standards while acknowledging limitations like inconsistencies in age classifications and restricted literature access.

Introduction: Diabetic retinopathy is a significant microvascular disorder and the leading cause of vision impairment in working-age individuals. Hyperglycemia triggers retinal damage through mechanisms such as the polyol pathway and the accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). Inhibiting key enzymes in this pathway, aldose reductase (AR) and sorbitol dehydrogenase (SD), alongside preventing AGE formation, may offer therapeutic strategies for diabetic retinopathy and other vascular complications.

Accurate estimation of interfacial tension (IFT) between nitrogen and crude oil during nitrogen-based gas injection into oil reservoirs is imperative. The previous research works dealing with prediction of IFT of oil and nitrogen systems consider synthetic oil samples such n-alkanes. In this work, we aim to utilize eight machine learning methods of Decision Tree (DT), AdaBoost (AB), Random Forest (RF), K-nearest Neighbors (KNN), Ensemble Learning (EL), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Multilayer Perceptron Artificial Neural Network (MLP-ANN) to construct data-driven intelligent models to predict crude oil - nitrogen IFT based upon experimental data of real crude oils samples encountered in underground oil reservoirs.

Objective And Significance: Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) plays a pivotal role in breast development by modulating tissue composition during the developmental phase. The TGFβ type II receptor (TGFβ RII) is implicated in breast cancer and represents a valuable therapeutic target. Due to the off-target side effects of many existing TGFβI/TGFβ RII inhibitors, a more targeted approach to drug discovery is necessary.

Article Synopsis
  • Family caregivers (FCGs) of cancer patients in hospice face psychological challenges and decreased quality of life due to caregiving demands, signaling a need for supportive interventions.
  • A virtual reality (VR) nature experience was implemented, allowing FCGs to immerse themselves in calming scenes at home, which they found to enhance relaxation and provide an escape from their caregiving stress.
  • Preliminary findings indicate that the VR intervention is feasible and acceptable, suggesting it can support the emotional health of hospice FCGs, though further research with larger and more diverse groups is necessary.

Pharmacogenomics for neurodegenerative disorders - a focused review.

Front Pharmacol

December 2024

Department of Anaesthesia Technology, College of Applied Medical Sciences, Khamis Mushait Campus, King Khalid University (KKU), Abha, Saudi Arabia.

Neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), Huntington's disease (HD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are characterized by the progressive degeneration of neuronal structure and function, leading to severe cognitive and motor impairments. These conditions present significant challenges to healthcare systems, and traditional treatments often fail to account for genetic variability among patients, resulting in inconsistent therapeutic outcomes. Pharmacogenomics aims to tailor medical treatments based on an individual's genetic profile, thereby improving therapeutic efficacy and reducing adverse effects.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in developing a distinguished alternative to human consumption of animal-based proteins. The application of lentil proteins in the food industry is typically limited due to their poor solubility and digestibility. An innovative method of balancing lentil-whey protein (LP-WP) complexes with higher-quality protein properties was established to address this issue, which coupled a pH-shifting approach with fermentation treatment.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease associated with the development of dementia. The hallmarks of AD neuropathology are accumulations of amyloid peptide (Aβ) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). Aβ is derived from the processing of APP (amyloid beta precursor protein) by BACE1 (beta-secretase 1) and γ-secretase through an amyloidogenic pathway.

From diagnosis to therapy: The role of LncRNA GAS5 in combatting some cancers affecting women.

Gene

March 2025

Uttaranchal Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Division of Research and Innovation, Uttaranchal University, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a collection of non-coding RNA molecules that consist of more than 200 nucleotides. In human malignancies, these lncRNAs exhibit abnormal expression patterns and play a significant role in either suppressing or promoting tumor growth. They achieve this by modulating various functions and mechanisms within cancer cells, including proliferation, invasion, metastasis, apoptosis, and resistance to different therapeutic approaches.

The present study explores the conformational dynamics of the membrane protein of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) within the Endoplasmic Reticulum-Golgi Intermediate Compartment (ERGIC) complex using an all-atomistic molecular dynamics simulation approach. Significant structural changes were observed in the N-terminal, C-terminal, transmembrane, and beta-sheet sandwich domains of the MERS-CoV membrane protein. This study also highlights the structural similarities between the MERS-CoV and the SARS-CoV-2 membrane proteins, particularly in how both exhibit a distinct kink in the transmembrane helix caused by aromatic residue-lipid interactions.
