Higher Plasma Omega-3 Levels are Associated With Improved Exacerbation Risk and Respiratory-Specific Quality of Life in COPD.

Chronic Obstr Pulm Dis

May 2024

Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, United States.

Background: Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have been associated with systemic anti-inflammatory responses. Dietary intake of omega-3 PUFAs eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) has also been associated with lower chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) morbidity using self-report food frequency questionnaires.

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between measured PUFA intake using plasma EPA+DHA levels and COPD morbidity.

Aims: Adults with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) responded more favourably to an exercise intervention compared with those with reduced ejection fraction. This study explores factors that contributed to this response, focusing on the qualitative perceptions of adults with HFpEF enrolled in an exercise intervention.

Methods And Results: This qualitative descriptive study is a secondary analysis of longitudinal interviews collected at 3, 6, 12, and 18 months from participants with HFpEF enrolled in a randomized controlled trial testing an intervention to promote adherence to exercise.

Background & Aims: Inflammation is necessary for a healthy pregnancy. However, unregulated or excessive inflammation during pregnancy is associated with severe maternal and infant morbidities, such as pre-eclampsia, abnormal infant neurodevelopment, or preterm birth. Inflammation is regulated in part by the bioactive metabolites of omega-6 (n-6) and omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids (FAs).

Measurement properties of the backward walk test in people with balance and mobility deficits: A systematic review.

Gait Posture

May 2024

Department of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences, College of Allied Health Professions, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, NE 68198, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The systematic review investigated the measurement properties of the backward walk test, focusing on its reliability and validity in assessing balance and mobility deficits in various populations.
  • A total of 14 studies with 853 participants were analyzed, revealing that the backward walk test has good reliability and moderate to good validity across different patient groups, including those with conditions like stroke and Parkinson's disease.
  • The findings suggest that the test is a useful clinical tool for evaluating balance and mobility, but further research is needed to explore its effectiveness in predicting fall risk.

How research during a public health emergency is conducted is recognized as essential to the public health response to that emergency. Such research needs to undergo substantive and meaningful ethical review in a timely manner. Rapid ethical review may be accomplished through a number of mechanisms, including use of local rapid-response institutional review boards (IRBs).

Background: Sensory-motor perturbations have been widely used to assess astronauts' balance in standing during pre-/post- spaceflight. However, balance control during walking, where most falls occur, was less studied in these astronauts. A study found that applying either visual or platform oscillations reduced the margin of stability (MOS) in the anterior-posterior direction (MOSap) but increased MOS in the medial-lateral direction (MOSml) as a tradeoff.

Objective: The gastrointestinal microbiome in preterm infants exhibits significant influence on optimal outcomes-with dysbiosis shown to substantially increase the risk of the life-threatening necrotizing enterocolitis. Iron is a vital nutrient especially during the perinatal window of rapid hemoglobin production, tissue growth, and foundational neurodevelopment. However, excess colonic iron exhibits potent oxidation capacity and alters the gut microbiome-potentially facilitating the proliferation of pathological bacterial strains.

Occupational Therapy Practice Guidelines for Adults Living With Alzheimer's Disease and Related Neurocognitive Disorders.

Am J Occup Ther

January 2024

Elizabeth K. Rhodus, PhD, MS, OTR/L, is Assistant Professor, Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, Department of Behavioral Science, College of Medicine, University of Kentucky, Lexington.

Importance: There are currently 55 million adults living with declining functional cognition-altered perception, thoughts, mood, or behavior-as the result of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related neurocognitive disorders (NCDs). These changes affect functional performance and meaningful engagement in occupations. Given the growth in demand for services, occupational therapy practitioners benefit from consolidated evidence of effective interventions to support adults living with AD and related NCDs and their care partners.

Purpose Of Review: This review highlights recently published studies on osteoarthritis (OA) epidemiology, including topics related to understudied populations and joints, imaging, and advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) methods.

Recent Findings: Contemporary research has improved our understanding of the burden of OA in typically understudied regions, including ethnic and racial minorities in high-income countries, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Latin America. Efforts have also been made to explore the burden and risk factors in OA in previously understudied joints, such as the hand, foot, and ankle.

Over the last 30 years, knowledge of the epidemiology of osteoarthritis (OA) has dramatically advanced, and Osteoarthritis and Cartilage has been on the forefront of disseminating research findings from large OA cohort studies, including the Johnston County OA Project (JoCoOA). The JoCoOA is a population-based, prospective longitudinal cohort that began roughly 30 years ago with a key focus on understanding prevalence, incidence, and progression of OA, as well as its risk factors, in a predominantly rural population of Black and White adults 45+ years old in a county in the southeastern United States. Selected OA results that will be discussed in this review include racial differences, lifetime risk, biomarkers, mortality, and OA risk factors.

Article Synopsis
  • - Maternal obesity is linked to an increased risk of childhood obesity and metabolic syndrome, with palmitate being a key saturated free fatty acid that crosses the placenta and affects fetal development.
  • - The study investigates how palmitate induces lipoapoptosis in trophoblast cells by activating stress response pathways, specifically through mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress.
  • - Findings reveal that palmitate leads to a concentration-dependent increase in trophoblast lipoapoptosis, with JNK being critical for this process, while ERK activation and stress granule formation act as protective mechanisms against cellular stress.

Background/purpose: License suspensions are a strategy to address alcohol-impaired driving behavior and recidivism following an alcohol driving while impaired (alcohol-DWI) conviction. Little is known about the specific impacts of conviction-related suspensions on safety outcomes and given recent fluctuations in alcohol-impaired driving behavior, crashes, and suspension trends, updated and focused assessments of this intervention are necessary. This study aimed to 1) examine the association between type of recent alcohol-DWI suspension and having a secondary alcohol-related license outcome and/or future crash event in North Carolina (NC) between 2007 and 2016; and 2) assess potential modification of these associations by race/ethnicity.
